Gyarados is Water/Flying thanks to a Japanese myth of a carp who climbs a waterfall and is rewarded by the Gods, who turn the carp into a flying serpent. If you would like me to add anything else to that or you have any further questions, then fire away. I'll naturally answer them as a mythology freak... and cause Gyarados is my 6th favourite Pokemon overall. ;B
