I've seen a pretty disturbing trend in what I see as a complete lack of folk music in this section.

    From Wikipedia

In a nutshell, it's music that reflect your culture, origins, legends, stories, and heritage.

    I'll show some good examples.

    Folk-Punk (My favorite)

    The Devil Makes Three

    Jack Johnson

    Folk-Pop

    Dark Dark Dark
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YFI_yRlpOs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEr_3iGfccI

    Appalachian folk-Bluegrass

    The Hackensaw Boys
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEAuTNdO7FA&feature=related

    Gypsy-Folk

Brown Bird (It's actually really hard to put these guys in any particular genre)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDI_toujJro

Freak-Folk (AKA the most badass stoner music ever)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3dagRtQgvI

So, what do you think of folk music? Who are your favorite artists?

Disclaimer: Country music is not folk music. If you post Kieth Urban or Garth Brooks I'm going to kill you.

oh i quite like folk punk if we're including that.

i tend to prefer folk punk with less folky intstruments, more like just a guy with a guitar and maybe some horns and a harmonica, though that The Devil Makes Three song in the OP was enjoyable enough.

i like all of Pat the Bunnies' projects, most well known two being Johnny Hobo and Wingnut Dishwashers Union.

others i've discovered, through talking to people into the style or following blogs or whatever, are Cranford Nix, Mr Denim, The Official Suckers, and the Anarchist Pizza Society.

most of these bands, by the way, have bandcamp pages you can find with a quick google where their releases can be gotten for free. or you can throw 5 dollars that you probably would have spent on drugs or a chicken sandwich you didn't actually need, whatever.

and there's this really good youtube channel with tons of this stuff.

also i don't know any other freak folk but i quite like Exuma if they (he?) count.

I've been getting more and more into folk music lately. First it was Neutral Milk Hotel, which is still probably my favorite folksy band, then there's artists like Iron & Wine and Bon Iver, whom I have just been getting into as of recent.

I hope those count as folk. I've been told they do, but...yeah, sometimes people lie to me. Whatever, all I know is that folk/acoustic music is quite good in my opinion!

I made a folk thread a while back, but it didn't last long.

I'm more a fan of the English folk tradition, with a keen interest in the folk music of Lancashire.
So to rhyme of a few, Martin Simpson (not the best version of the song I've heard, but the only one on youtube) Nic Jones (been a bit cheeky and picked another version of the Martin Simpson song I linked), Kate Rusby, Bellowhead, The Houghton Weavers, The Oldham Tinkers, Harry Boardman, Mike Harding (when he's not doing comedy, though his comedy is excellent.)

I quite like compilation albums too, especially themed one's like Deep Lancashire, The Iron Muse, Steam Ballads and Topic's Voice of the People series. All of which are essential listneings.

Also have an interest in folk metal (which is covered in the metalheads thread), folk punk (Dropkick Murphys in particular) and a bit of Neo-Folk and similar genres, bands like Death in June, In Gowan Ring, and Nest.

Evilyn, Exuma definitley counts as freak folk. They're pretty awesome too. Kudos. I wasn't quite able to get into Anarchist Pizza Society, but I really digged the rest of your videos. Especially Exuma and The Official Suckers.

    @FairGamer9215

Yeah man, Nuetral Milk Hotel is definitley Folk, but they seem like a blend of psychedelic and folk, which I haven't seen that combo very often. They have a pretty cool sound going for them.

    @HammerHeart

I haven't had too much of a chance yet to expand my tastes into British folk. There's currently a Folk/Americana movement in the U.S. that I've gotten sucked into. I should probably take a breather and listen to folk from other countries. :p

I'll be editing in all your songs in the OP to have a nice little comprehensive list. I'll do that when I don't feel like being lazy. Lol.

Here is another example of folk pop since I only had one in the OP. They're also a mixture of dark cabaret.

also i swear i hear someone use a kazoo somewhere in the album. which would be a first for folk punk for me.
