For Real?! Mallow's Cooking Operation! (961)

I don't get it. Is there something wrong with him getting Pikpek? There's a ton in the forest near them or is he like AZ where he has a special Pikpek that's sick/dies or something.

eternal beak pikipek confirmed. it'll come down from the sky after ash defeats the aether foundation.

Okay episode. Mallow got some great focus, but there needs to be more. Pretty much like the Pokevision episode in XY.

They actually showed Rowlet's family again. I adore this show's continuity so much.

Isn't really something falling under continuity when it's all in the same series.

Probably because the most are sick of regional birds with the same lame normal/flying typing. If it had a good and interesting typing like T-Flame, it would've been more popular.

Besides, the chances of past characters showing up are ridiculously high all because Ash is stuck on the same island and not traveling who-knows-how-many-miles.

There's that, but on the other side, he won't see new places like Konikoni City and the people living in these places until he starts traveling.

There's always extended field trips and missions. Ash had a 2 day homestay at Kiawe's house on Akala Island learning more about the people there.

Rad episode, for sure!

Mao finally got her first focus episode of the series centralized around her dreams and aspirations and I wasn't disappointed at all! I hadn't had much of an issue with her focus up until this point, she did give off the vibe of being the "main companion" of the saga and she's definitely the most active of the classmates and makes the most token episodes appearance? This episode really reminded me of the words the theme in the S&M games about Pokemon and humans in Alola living side-by-side and supporting each other like in the game and how they all have so much life. We got Pikachu helping Mao with her dish in a very Pikachu-like way, we got Amakaji doing everything it could to attract the Odoridori with its pheromones, got Mukuroh casually helping find the nectar (with a little cameo by his family too!).

It was really nice little stuff like that that I enjoy and helps me believe the narrative they're trying to sell. Sun&Moon has really been taking its time nicely with fleshing out the Pokemon's personalities and who they are, we didn't get it all in episode one of Satoshi arriving in Alola and I'm happy they really took it all at a nice pace bit-by-bit. We find out Iwanko is doing its own things and mooching off Kukui, we find out Nyabby isn't just some rando wandering around Melemele but is under the care of a senior Mooland, Mimikyu hates Pikachu a lot and only does want it wants and only chooses to fight when it's against Pikachu, in Amamaiko's case she's a server at the cafe. But really though it was cute seeing Mao remembering, interacting with and enlisting Pikachu's help to make her dish and Mamane was pretty cute himself with how he was the only one who could keep eating it despite its sparky side-effects (Electric-type specialist, he is.)

It was nice seeing Mao's family and I really like how so far Sun&Moon has been so focused on fleshing out the lives and families of the cast something that we never really got much of before in anime except with Iris and Takeshi's constant looks at their past. It makes everything feel more rich in its own way, even the Pokemon like Nyabby and Mukuroh have adoptive parents, heck Ashimari was more or less adopted by Suiren too! Mao was great with her overall activity, voice, faces, her drive and fire to get crap DONE and her interactions with Satoshi were great. She's very active, kind of reminds me of Eureka and Iris in a way. The incorporation and worldbuilding on the lore of the Odoridori's appearances changing in respect to what flower nectar they sip was a reallllllllyyyy nice touch.

The evolution was fantastic, I hope they stick to this style of evolving in the future. I can just imagine Iwanko going fully rabid and vicious once it evolves into a "werewolf" and the transformation being so gruesome as its limbs lengthen and sprout ferociously. Amakaji going full Sailor Moon with that mahou shoujo-esque Magical Leaf attack and the poses and all was some nice creativity on the writers (animators?). All Kojirou can do is comment in a horrified look was "KAWAAAIIII??!!!" Seeing her go all heroine-like and jump around to free Satoshi and Mao while "punishing" Team Rocket with Double Slap was so clutch.

Mukuroh just wrecking TR's contraption and ~casually~ flying away like nothing made me smile, I love that owl. Seeing Satoshi wanting to payback TR before they escape was freaking savage, I gotta admit. Yeah its been done before but it's a nice way of being reminded that he might just be getting tired of their crap sometimes. I really appreciate how Mao thanked everyone for their efforts as everyone played a role in helping her find the nectar for her recipe. I'm so happy we get those little end segments in the PokeProblems where we see some little extra footage of the trainer and Pokemon after their focus episode too. Pretty good episode, they did a great job not really spoilering Amakaji's evolution and it was freakig sick despite the fact we found out at the last minute.

This episode completely dissolved my fear that Mao was going to be treated in similar vein to Sana and Amamaiko to Tairenar and I can't wait to see more of the Fruit Pokemon and see what she can do. In a way Amamaiko heroic shoujo style fits Mao who at this point up until now had been looking out for and supporting the other classmates so much. Encouraging Suiren during her lecture, always showing concern for Lillie and her Pokemon, helping Satoshi find Mukuroh, etc. It's all really nice, I think this episode cemented Mao as the classmate I like the most. In terms of interest she comes up the rear next to Kaki and Lillie for me.

I didn't expect to see an evolution of Bounsweet so suddenly, but now that I think about it, a waifumon was missing from the cast.

Ok, I liked this episode!

Had some funny moments: Bounsweet fending off Rowlet, poor Rowlet being denied. Mallow's reactions after everyone tries her electrifying stew (so cute lol). Of course Sophocles would like it though and did I hear some OS bgm btw..? (Definitely sounded like TBC, nice touch there). The gag with Bounsweet, Oricoro, Ash, Mallow, and how it'd speed up and be repetitive was good, but Bounsweet looked awful after that (looked like a prune and definitely needed some rest after that). Pikachu yelling at Rowlet when they were trapped in the net was a quick moment, but added some comedy.

The other things that I liked: Team Rocket's room reminded me of Cosmo Canyon from FF7 for some reason (where Nanaki and Bugenhagen stay). Seeing Rowlet's old family, some more continuity there. It was nice to find out what Mallow's goal is. Seeing the one Oricorio change forms was cool too. Oh yeah, as much as I didn't want to see it yet, I must admit that the evolution was very nicely done, good animation there. Also, I did really like Steenee's power pose there after Mallow commanded it to basically beat up Team Rocket lol. Don't mess with Steenee!! Last, even though it seemed like that Mallow didn't do much, I still really liked seeing her energetic personality with some of that scatterbrain mixed in, for the most the episode.

Ok, time to watch the raw episode despite barely understanding any Japanese.

UPDATE:

Well, I couldn't really tell what they were talking about most of the time but I managed to make out something about being number one in Alola. Team Rocket in their surprisingly well-furbished base were a nice touch and their appearance didn't feel forced. Bounsweet's evolution was very cool as I expected from reading posts on here. I still want it to evolve into a Tsareena but it should keep the personality it has as a Steenee. Can't wait for next week, and then the 6th!

Thank you for Steenee, now people who are arrogant to claim something won't happen because there's no evidence can now be directed towards Steenee. Just because you might be right doesn't mean you will, no one can be so confidently certain something will happen UNTIL it happens.

But now the question will be, who will be the next evolution.

I don't get it. Is there something wrong with him getting Pikpek? There's a ton in the forest near them or is he like AZ where he has a special Pikpek that's sick/dies or something.

Do people just not get that Rowlet is symbolically Ash's Pikipek.

Ash getting Pikipek would completely ruin Rowlet's storyline and throw Rowlet's backstory under the bus.

If Rowlet didn't come from a family of Toucannon, Trumbeak, Pikipek THEN I might be willing to see why Ash would get Pikipek, as of now, and even if it COULD happen, it will never make sense.

But Toucannon is my favorite regional bird after Noctowl...

This episode turned out better than I expected. We got Bonsweet's evolution AND Mallow's goal, both in the same episode! Honestly I didn't expect Mallow's Bonsweet to evolve into Steenee so early in the series, but I'm glad it did.

The above was about Mallow chan's brother but anyways, I don't see why it's required for Ash to get the regional bird when technically, he DID. Like you already explained, Rowlet is symbolically Pikpek but also the regional starter. To be honest, I think Ash only gets the regional bird just to showcase it. U_U With Rowlet's backstory and him being the odd one from having Pikpek siblings, a Trumbeak mom, and a Toucannon dad, it's safe to say Ash has no need to catch the regional bird when he already has it. ;) The real question is, how is he going to explain to his family why he's in love with a berry.

The reason Ash usually gets the regional bird is probably because nearly everyone has one in their games to fly places. But with PokeRide, that's been rendered a moot point. I'd still want him to get Pikipek simply because Toucannon is awesome.

I mean, I'm no cook, but why would anyone think adding electricity to their food is a good idea? Did that book tell Mallow to do it?

It told her to add the nectar the episode was focused around locating, in order to give the stew a tingling aftertaste. Since she didn't have any, she thought substituting a Thunderbolt would work.

It didn't.

did they mention that mallow's older brother was on some kind of journey?

Yeah, he's on a culinary journey, which is where he found that recipe.

Frozocrone

Miraculous!
I wonder if the evolution scene was only done as a reference to magical girl transformations and not an actual thing they will use for the rest?

...

Don't say that...I was looking forward to all the evolutions :(

I like that the series has a decent amount of continuity with things like the pancake race and Rowlet's family being referenced occasionally as well as Rockruff's bond with Ash and Team Rocket's base being plot points that have been developed over multiple episodes.
