FullMetal Alchemist fake Envy ripoff

Well, me and my friends were walking down town earlier, when me friend noticed something on the laundrettes window. It was what looked like a picture of Envy from FMA, but seems a little odd...

Copyright infringement I thought and there making money from it too. So i went to investigate more by following the url on the poster http://www.electrikevents.co.uk/ sure enough theres a picture of Envy there. I very much doubt this as coincedence since its the exact design and even pose. What do you make of it?

What Luke said. They're obviously trying to copy Envy's character. >>;

Lol, I just notified FUNimation about it. Wonder if they'll do anything =P Looks like a band of chavs to me...

Edit:

Wow that was fast, got a reply from FUNimation 10 mins after I sent the email lol. Well here it is:

Dear NAME CENSORED,

We appreciate your concern and efforts in bringing this matter to our attention; our legal department will investigate and act accordingly. Yes, you are correct in assuming that FUNimation does have the licensed rights to Fullmetal Alchemist in many areas of the words, including the United Kingdom.

Kind Regards,

I make of it that you're making a big deal out of nothing.
It's no big thing for someone to use an image of an anime character in this format. I remember when I was in high school seeing flyers for some guy's band with a picture of Kuririn just randomly thrown in.

I think the rendering of an anime character like that is ok as long as it's for domestic or personal use, not to be used in any way to make money. If they were making money off of this obvious envy rip, then they need to be brought to justice. In regards to a high-school band, its just that, a highschool band, their audience is not on a large enough scale for anyone to care. If this band got a record label and went global while continuing to use that picture, then it would becoem a problem.

You're not allowed to use copyright characters for anything, period. They're pretty much screwing themselves by using Envy for advertisments, which is pretty much against the law.

Yup and too add to that, in the poster to be exact its £10 per ticket. There probably gonna get in trouble lol.

I understand that. I was just noting that in a case of something like a little known high-school band, big corporations like FUNimation barely take notice or take action on it.

Using anime characters to promote stuff just seems to be the thing at the moment. The local rock bar here has pretty much abused the image of Alucard from Hellsing on everything from it's walls to it's food menu's. It's actually my fault though, my brother is the flatmate of the head barman and one day I loaned them my Hellsing DVDs and then a few weeks later the bar got a mysterious make over :\

But yeah, even before then the monthly gig lists for that bar had always featured some kind of anime or comic character, if they tried to sue everyone who used an image for any kind of promotion they'd never stop.

Now that's interesting story there. what they have, an image of Alucard taking a bite from a Hamburger on the menu? lol

I don't know where you guys are located but using an anime character for anything of the advertising sort is pretty much a taboo...it's like the kiss of death. Anime-lovers get a bad label around here, when I got into it I lost the majority of my friends and social well-being...

Back on topic, I hope FUNimation puts a whoopin on that Envy ad. Especially considering they put the name of the group across his chest.

"Brought to justice" "a taboo" "the kiss of death"?
Thou spake in such a ill tongue, youth.

Too bad for you.
I don't know what Amish-like town you could live in where anime is "a taboo" among the general public, but I'm willing to entertain the idea that you're overexaggerating, as the young tend to do. I seriously doubt anime characters and watching anime is truely such a hex upon your head, in a town where you can at least scrounge up an internet connection...

I'm not overexaggerating a thing. How young do I think I am? I'm not amish and I don't live in an amish-like town...ever hear of Canton where the Professional Football HOF is located? Yeah, there. I'm telling you, I get a daily verbal barrage from the majority of the student population. The criticism doesn't bother me, it's the fact that they don't have anything better to worry about that bothers me. Ever since I got into anime I'm pretty much a loner...a pretty good friend here and there.

And btw, nice generalization, chief *thumbs up*.

Basically I'm just saying that I wish anime was as good of a marketing tactic around here...

Heh same here for me, where i go to school liking anime or being in the anime club makes you so low in the social ladder it makes the chess club look popular in other words "Whoever likes anime is a loser" or assumes its only kids shows or cartoon p*rn, hell at the spirit assembly NOBODY clapped! it took 3 minutes for people to start clapping (a teacher must have started it) i kept getting dirty looks from this preppy chick and some guy asks "Hey hows the chess club havin' fun playing YOU GAY OH? and watchin PokGAYmon? LOSER HAHAHAHAH" But they are close minded and only fallow what "everyone else" says is "cool" or not like mindless sheep, so it dosent bug me and its sometimes funny because its like they don't relise how stupid they make themselves look. and fyi (before any one says anything) my town and school are not Amish (the school is pretty much over ruled by the druggies, pot heads, poseur "gangstas" and preps)

And back on topic
Doesn't 4kids sort of do the same thing in a way? like Using JAPANESE anime characters to sing the U.S National anthem and Winx Club (Winx Club is originally from Germany) I'm not saying its bad but shouldn't American cartoons sing the American anthem?

and honstly would it have killed the guy who made the ad to give credit or a disclaimer like ( Envy (C) of Full Metal Alchemist) or something? whats so wrong about adding some extra text at the bottom waether the font is tiny small or big?

Judging by your life and death description of something so piddling as social standing, I'm willing to wager you are a high school student.

Nope. Never heard of such a town.

I'm telling you, I get a daily verbal barrage from the majority of the student population.

That sounds like a pretty sucky student body. I wore my black pants and matching "I Killed Kenny" shirt the day after the Columbine shootings (didn't know it happened at the time) and no one said anything to me...

The criticism doesn't bother me, it's the fact that they don't have anything better to worry about that bothers me.

That bothers me as well, that such a large margin of humanity is preoccupied with what others are doing.

Ever since I got into anime I'm pretty much a loner...a pretty good friend here and there.

Try finding an anime club, whether it be school-based or just some people that hang out at each others' houses.

And btw, nice generalization, chief *thumbs up*.

You're welcome.

Basically I'm just saying that I wish anime was as good of a marketing tactic around here...

Well, you could always relocate... or, if people are going to judge you for liking something they know nothing about, you could try to stop caring what other people think of you.

I thought Winx Club was originally from ITALY. Also since RAI is involved in it's production, it sort of qualifies as a French co-production.
