Does that mean that Milo’s gym is not in fact the first?

Motostoke is poke-Manchester?

Milo's Eldegoss is Level 21. In past Pokémon games, it's almost always been the second Gym Leader whose signature Pokémon's level is in the high teens or low 20s, sometimes the third Gym Leader. Here are the levels for each second and third Gym Leader for each region.

Kanto
Misty's Starmie - Level 21 (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen), Level 19 (Let's Go! Pikachu and Eevee)
Lt. Surge's Raichu - Level 24 (Red, Green, Blue, FireRed, LeafGreen), Level 28 (Yellow), Level 26 (Let's Go! Pikachu and Eevee)

Johto
Bugsy's Scyther - Level 16 (Gold, Silver, Crystal), Level 17 (HeartGold and SoulSilver)
Whitney's Miltank - Level 20 (Gold, Silver, Crystal), Level 19 (HeartGold and SoulSilver)

Hoenn
Brawly's Makuhita - Level 19 (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald), Level 16 (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
Wattson's Magneton - Level 23 (Ruby, Sapphire), Level 21 (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
Wattson's Manectric - Level 24 (Emerald)

Sinnoh
Gardenia's Roserade - Level 22 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)
Maylene's Lucario - Level 30 (Diamond and Pearl), Level 32 (Platinum)

Unova
Lenora's Watchog - Level 20 (Black and White)
Roxie's Whirlipede - Level 18 (Black 2 and White 2)
Burgh's Leavanny - Level 23 (Black and White), Level 24 (Black 2 and White 2)

Kalos
Grant's Amaura - Level 25 (X and Y)
Grant's Tyrunt - Level 25 (X and Y)
Korrina's Hawlucha - Level 32 (X and Y)

By comparison, here is a list of each region's FIRST Gym Leader. None of them reach Level 21, or even come close to it:

Brock's Onix - Level 14 (Red, Green, Blue, FireRed, LeafGreen), Level 12 (Yellow, Let's Go! Pikachu and Eevee)
Falkner's Pidgeotto - Level 9 (Gold, Silver, Crystal), Level 13 (HeartGold and SoulSilver)
Roxanne's Nosepass - Level 15 (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald), Level 14 (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
Roark's Cranidos - Level 14 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)
Cilan's Pansage - Level 14 (Black and White)
Chili's Pansear - Level 14 (Black and White)
Cress's Pansage - Level 14 (Black and White)
Cheren's Lillipup - Level 13 (Black 2 and White 2)
Viola's Vivillon - Level 12 (X and Y)

And just for completeness, here are the levels of the first three Totem Pokémon found in the various Alola games:

Totem Gumshoos - Level 11 (Sun and Ultra Sun)
Totem Raticate - Level 11 (Moon and Ultra Moon)
Totem Wishiwashi - Level 20 (Sun and Moon)
Totem Araquanid - Level 20 (Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon)
Totem Salazzle - Level 22 (Sun and Moon)
Totem Marowak - Level 22 (Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon)
(And if you did the game out of intended order, Totem Lurantis is Level 24 in all versions.)

Just pointing this out but you might want to go back and look at the gym leaders in Platinum because while it's true that Maylene was the 3rd gym leader in Diamond & Pearl that isn't the case for Platinum, as the 3rd gym leader in Platinum is actually Fantina and her ace is a level 26 Mismagius.

Tbh you could battle her, Maylene, and Crasher Wake in any order like you could with the latter two in DP iirc.

yes but in Platinium the intended order especially when you look at the levels is Fantina as the 3rd gym leader, while Maylene is the 4th gym leader in Crasher Wake as the 5th gym leader as their respective aces are levels 26, 32, and 37 respectively. So if your going to argue that they can be battle in any order then you should put both Crasher Wake and Fantina up there.

Ah, all right then. I never played Platinum, so I was not aware the Gym Leader order was different in that one.

Milo's Eldegoss is actually Level 19, although it is confirmed through the reviews that the Motostoke Gym (this is the industrial area) is first.

The comparison with the gym leader levels is nonsense imo. Level scaling depends of how much there is actually in between gyms. Technically Milo's Level 19 Eldegoss could work for the first gym looking at how long the way from the hometown to the city with Milo's gym is.

Can you give me the source? Having seen people talking about that and also heard that you can't fight that gym right away.

Regarding space between Gyms, since you get access to the Wild Area prior to the first gym, and the wild area contains Pokemon of a wide variety of levels, I wonder how realistically high you could get your Pokemon before even facing the first Gym...

Yes, there is no way of really knowing if you challenge Milo first without someone having played the game, at least right now. I do think it's very unlikely the first gym will reach Level 19 though, unless there's something odd about its level scaling (like with Let's Go!, in which Sabrina's Alakazam was at Level 50). Unless you spend a really long time up to something in particular though, or the EXP Share really does boost everyone's levels that rapidly, I can't really see the first Gym Leader having a level that high, since they're traditionally supposed to ease you in to the concept of Gym Leaders and thus not put up that much of a challenge. I also strongly suspect the initial trek through the Wild Area will be highly restricted--that is, areas will be blocked off, certain mechanics will not appear, and the wild Pokémon that appear will be carefully selected, so as not to overwhelm players (which Pokémon, as a series, has been very careful to avoid doing).

I don't know if you go from Motostoke straight to Milo's Gym after that, or if there's something in between. Maybe those mountains to the northwest of Motostoke, the one with the train tracks going into it, contains the actual first gym.

I do remember someone, way back in the day, who went on a road trip with his parents, and he decided he would train his Charmander relentlessly on the routes around Vermilion City, not catching any other Pokémon or challenging Brock until the road trip was finished. By the time that happened, he had a Level 45 Charizard when he entered Pewter City.

In other words, you could theoretically grind and get your Pokémon to as high as Level 100 if you're patient enough.

one of the reviews said that wild Pokémon of any level, including ridiculously overleveled compared to you, can immediately appear upon your first entry into the BreathoftheWild-Area.

I'm guessing you can at least run from those encounters though. There is not much in a video game that'd be more annoying than an unwinnable situation brought on by sheer bad luck or not knowing how the game's rules work yet.

The stronger ones have exclamations pop up above their heads iirc, so good chances are you can run around them.

Do you think an NPC will warn the player about that ahead of time? I'm the sort of person to run toward stuff like that knowing nothing else, since I'd expect it to be better rewards and such.
