GALAR REGION Discussion & Speculation Thread

It seems like we're getting the typical Ice gym along with that snowy town. Also, I think we'll get Dragon and Rock type gyms.

Draconian city (Dragon)

Just as a heads up, the "crown city"'s entrance is actually a dog, like in the titles.

Another thing I noticed is much like Kalos vast majority of train roads seem to be non-traversable, ie. cosmetic.

Looking at the map again, it looks to be separated into two broad sections.

There's the lower half, which is full of farmland and small towns and might represent the English countryside. We probably start here.

Then there's the upper half, which is very urbanised, full of big cities and contain the stadiums. Perhaps the bulk of the story takes place here.

Interestingly, that train line appears to connect the two halves together, while there's no obvious route from the town in the south to the red city in the middle.

So to me, that suggests that the lower half may be the easing in, tutorial-like area while the upper half could be where things step up.

Cramorant is too cute for words!
I agree.
The gyms look like
Grass
Water
Fighting (in that one town)
Dark (in the town with the mushrooms)
Also I’d want
Electric
Dragon
Steel
Ice
And Elite 4 could be
Fire
Psychic
Fairy
Normal
Champion would use a very varied team, with a new bird Pokémon (maybe the final evolution of the bird we see flying in Rt. 1) and the starter that you and your rival don’t have, as well as a Wishiwashi.
I could see the football stadiums being sort of like a place where you challenge trainers, sort of like a Battle Royale.
The town with the dog on the tower makes me think we’re going to get a legendary dog.

VoltTacklingPika: Yeah the region is basically shaped like a spiral. Just like how Kalos was designed as a star and Unova was designed as a circle.

Looks like another small, cramped, linear region with a ton of flair in the background but minimal substance. This region seems to fall short of even my reduced expectations for this game. I’ll give them a chance to prove me wrong but they did a terrible job of making this look like an evolved, next gen console experience.
Not every game needs to be open world.

No, but I do wish they would step away from the more cramped routes they've always had, which it doesn't look like they're doing. I doesn't have to be BotW, it can still be linear, but it would be great to see more open spaces rather than a series of interlocking paths between cities.

Just as I predicted. The new region Galar is based on a European country. I'm guessing that means the next generation will start in a region based on one of the United States, just like Generation 5's Unova (based on New York) and Generation 7's Alola (based on Hawaii).

Also, I have a feeling that due to the size of Galar, we might get more than eight gyms this time.

Everything stays.
The steampunk/early industrialization aesthetic they have going for this region... I'm shaking. I've been wanting a Pokémon or Zelda game to have this steampunk aesthetic to it and I'm so excited that Pokémon Sword and Shield are it.
I too was a bit cautious of the recent England-inspired-region rumor but I have to say, the Galar region looks incredible. Gyms are returning, habitats are varied, the cities look great and I like that trains are going to be a more prominent mode of transportation.

From what it looks like on the map, there are 5 visible gyms, specialising in the following types:
Grass
Water
Ground
Fairy
Ice

Perish the thought that there aren't the standard 8 gyms...

The way things stand at the end of Gen 7 there is 1 type not used by a gym leader (Dark) and 4 not used by elite four members (Normal, Grass, Electric and Fairy).

The map rules out 2 of the 4 elite types (if indeed there are a set of elite four members), Grass and Fairy (as they look to be gym leader types - with the first practically confirmed).

I'd like Electric and Normal to be used as elite four types. It would be especially nice to see Electric as an elite four member type, as it has been used as a gym leader/trial captain type so many times.

It would also leave the other 2 to be specialised in in Gen 9.

It would be nice for us to finally get a gym leader who specialises in the Dark-type however if we didn't The Pokemon Company could argue that in Gen 7 we had the equivalent of one (Nanu), as he was a Dark-type specialist we faced before the Elite Four.

I think that these are the Gym and Elite 4 types:
Water
Grass
Electric
Steel
Dragon
Fairy
Rock
Ice

Elite 4:
Ground
Bug
Flying
Fighting

Based on the visible arenas: Grass, Water, Ice, either Ground/Rock, Fairy, Steel, Dragon and Mix.

Steel is probably within the industrialized-city, castle in the center is Dragon and Mix is in London. The rest are visible on map.

I don't think that there will be a multitype gym. I think that the tower will instead be an Electric-type gym.

Might be too identical to Kalos' Lumiose GYM and flashback to Sunyshore's Lighthouse. Lucario VS. Tyranitar might take place at the last arena (London) which is why I consider multi-type into account.

I don't think that there will ever be a multitype gym unless the gym leader is a rival from a past game (like Blue in Gen 2).

I think the stadium in the forest is Ghost and the one in the snow is actually Steel. The one in the mountain is either Rock or Ground and the others are Grass and Water. I doubt Grass would be the first gym though. That'd be kinda unfair for the starters.

The map kinda makes the region look like a fantasy world, the other regions look like countries but something about Galar looks like a fantasy kingdom. I think it's the mushroom forest and the castle like structures
