If I were to purchase a Japanese version of Black or White, would it work in my DS or would I need a Japanese system for it?

The games are region-locked, but only on hardware more advanced than (and including) the DSi. If you have a Japanese B/W game and an original DS or DS Lite, you'd be able to play it. Anything more advanced and you're locked out.

I have an older DS lite. So I should be good then. Keeping my fingers crossed. If it does work on my DS, or on my sister's DS (also a lite, though a newer one than mine) I should be able to breed shinies and complete the Unova dex by catching Tornadus in Black and transferring it to White to take to the Abundant Shrine.
