Gay Marriage, be mature or get infracted. - Babylon

In my state of New Jersey, gay marriage is illegal. The main reason for this is that the health care companies, et cetera do not want to have to pay for the same advantages a heterasexual couple would get. Another reason is that it clearly states in the Bible that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

I, for one, believe that there should be gay marriage. Just because they are bisexual or homosexual doesn't mean they should be treated any different than a heterasexual. Why should we shun someone due to their sexual preferences, is there really any difference between racism and prjudice due to sexuality. No, I think there isn't.

They allowed it in California for a brief period, but then revoked it (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). Also, why did they revoke it (this is me asking a question, please answer, I'd like to know).

Also, there has been some dispute over giving them what would be called a 'civil union'. The problem with this brings me back to point A: The health care companies don't want to give them the same benefits as a heterasexual couple.

So, I ask you. Should we let the gay couples marry each other, or should we not? What about civil unions? If they get civil unions should they get the benefits as a heterasexual marriage or no? You decide.

I don't agree with civil unions mainly because of one of the amendments made over a century ago that talks about 'equality'.

In other words, civil unions remind me segregation, and I think segregation should never be justified especially for the sake of religion.

If they ruled segregated schools unconstitutional then I find civil unions in the same boat.

That brings up an interesting point. The basis of our country was to not alienate on the religous beliefs of people, and another amendmant was thaat there would be equality through the entire country. I think that the amendmant only applies to race, but if we let gays marry, it would cause an uproar from the christians, Jews, et cetera.

I'm still for it, though.

Personally I think they're making this country too "Christian" Just because it contradicts the beliefs of a religion doesn't make it a supreme abomination. Gay marriage isn't a crime. Of course it's frowned upon in many religious sects but it's not like we're talking about a criminal act like stealing and killing. One cannot segregate love. That's the way I see it.

The thing is, the USA is a predominantly Christian country. These Christians will be up in arms about it. Who knows, maybe we won't have gay marriage until we have an atheist president.

It's interesting. The only presidents we've had are Christian. No Jews, no Muslims, no Hindus, or anything else.

We have a black president, but we can't have a Jewish president. Psshh.

And by the way, he's not black, he's bi-racial. He's really only five percent black.

The thing is you were talking about California.

See even though California is liberal, there are still some jack***** there, and they threw a hissy fit. They brought prop 8, something that can stop gay marriage. They fooled the entire damn state into thinking that it would be taught in schools, and that AIDS would go airborne, and that God would come down and kill all the clowns first.

NOT THE CLOWNS, the foolish sheep said, so the voted for prop 8 and gay marriage stopped.

As a member of the bisexual youth, I am concerned with Gay marriage. This country was founded on sepereation of church and state, just because it
s in the bible doesn't mean it's damn justifyed.

I mean they talk about not to eat shelfish, but you see kids in their church dresses going to Popeyes, and red lobster, and look at those crazy conservatives in Lousiana eating that crab the ended up in their laundry.

You don't see a ban on Shelfish!

Basically the people against gay marriage will put animals before us.

I can understand the coporate jacktards wanting to not have gay marriage for their own selfish desire. but I seriously think the gays can save us, legalize it and watch the economy be stimulated. No pun intended.

I say, **** the civil unions, just give us what we really want and we'll stop lying to you on how your house paint matches your curtians.

Yup, prettty much. His mother was 100% white from Kansas. ;P

@ Sapphire Well, the thing about shellfish is that it is a Jewish belief, and is part of keeping Kosher. I do not keep Kosher, for the record. This country was always a predominantly Christian country and always will be. I know there is no ban on shellfish, and there is on gay marriage. It's a very unique situation.

And watch your language ;P

Marriage is, without a debt, a religious institution.

And it was wrong for the US Government to ever get involved in making marriage into a civil process that includes legal differences between a single person and a couple.

My solution would simply be, no more government ordained marriage. You want to be recognized as a couple by the government for the purpose of tax purposes and other legal benefits? That should be a Civil Union. And I see no problem that two consenting adults can't be recognized with this civil service (with restrictions on incestuous relationships, because any children coming from there are at risk for a variety of defects).

Then, marriage is left to whatever religion wants it. And any church or temple or whatever has their full control over whatever marriage is, because they are private institutions.

However, politics is the art of the possible, and what I just described is completely overhauling the marriage system in this country.

So what to do now?

Beats me.

Would just like to mention that religion is probably not such a big deal. The US Jewish population is small, so naturally the chances of a President being a Jew are small. While the majority of the US is Protestant, they've elected Catholics (Kennedy) in the past, not to mention that when Obama's Islamic slip-of-the-tongue happened, everyone was all "Oh, he's not getting elected now!"

Guys, guys, guys. I think that if two people love each other, whether they are a man and a woman, two women, or two men, they should regardless be allowed to get married if they wish. I don't believe in this senseless segregation. It's just like racism. I only hope that a day will come when we look at our fellow man and recognize that he is different, but that he is a person as well. Everyone has feelings, not just you!

And let the uberconservative megahardcore superfundamentalist "holier-than-thou" Christians be angry, because I honestly don't give a fuck. Fellow Christians, today I ask you this: does God not have equal love for us all? Gay or straight, black or white, etc.

Peace.

Amen. The 'homophobia' is really not as recognized as racism. Why should the prejudice against different things be viewed on different levels.

Deals and Issues
This should really be a non-issue because if you're going to allow gay people to live together as a couple, or whatever, banning them from getting married is just idiotic. Is it "less sinful" or something if they aren't. Get real. Of course gay marriage should be allowed. It's not just homophobia, it's totally pointless homophobia, and it's wrong.

Many people see homosexuality as unnatural and repulsive, even if the Bible isn't the source of this belief.

I know that the US is mainly Christian, and that marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman but.. honestly, they can get over it? Things change. Let them get married if they want to. If the health care companies don't want to treat them equally then **** them. No one should be told they cannot get married because some see it as inhumane or wrong.

Also, to the person who said religion isn't really a big deal.. You know how many people flipped out when they heard rumors Obama was muslim? It's a big deal.

I'm a Catholic, but I am in support of gay marriage mainly for the reason that my personal hero is gay. Otherwise the issue doesn't bother me one way or the other.

If we want to get into the debate over religion, then homosexuals should at least be allowed civil unions, because it is a marriage by the state and not the church. Either way, they should be allowed to be with each other.

Besides with all the sexual scandals the church has been involved in, I think it is a little hypocritical saying its immoral for gays to marry, yet they'll break their vows of celibacy.

I would agree with Randomspot555 in that the best thing to do is to secularise legal marriage and essentially remove government from the religious process and religion from the governmental process. Not allowing homosexuals to marry or allowing them to marry just under a different name is totally discriminatory and in the second case a return to segregation. I don't see the point of the "sanctity" of marriage

Anyway this is a crap thread. There is neither dissent nor discussion and I predict there won't be until either someone decides to play devil's advocate or a trollish fundamentalist walks in.
