Gen 8 Gym Types and Structure Speculation Thread

Yeah the thing is nothing is like an obvious choice at the moment. You would say either the really big tower in the London city or the one we also see as possible mixed type gym, but neither have a victory road. They could always have some sort of quest how you need to go do something first and the reach the end of a cave before you can enter, that would be new. But it's also possible the league is just not in this picture. Which might be the likely option.

If they are returning to gyms in which each gym leader specializes in a specific type, I do wonder if Game Freak sees not having up til now a Dark type gym, as so many of us do, unfinished busy, and low hanging fruit. Some people in the past have brought up how the Dark type, in Japan, is the so called "Evil" type, and how that is a possible reason we've not yet had a Dark type gym.

I'd like to point out, even in several Japanese speculation threads I've come across online over the years, Japanese fans commonly express ontinter in a Dark type gym finally coming to fruition.

It just seems like a no-brainer at this point, it's never been done before, and it's something that seemingly draws interest among a wide range of the franchise's audience.

That'll always be a dumb reason to not have a Dark-type, assuming it's even true (which I doubt).

We have multiple Dark-type experts in Pokemon, and none of them are bad people (villains do not count obviously. Heck, I don't think we have a Dark-type specialist villain yet), and being Dark doesn't make the Pokemon actually bad.

I hope so too, I still think there will be a twist on gym as they refer to the main trainer as "master" rather than "leader"

I suppose I wouldn't be surprised if they scrapped the puzzles in favor of getting straight to the gym...master considering GF's mobile mentality of "kids don't have time to devote a ton to video games!!". Which would really be bad! You can have a bunch of nobodies cheering me on in a field but that won't mean anything in the long run!

One of the Gyms needs to be Dark type. I think it was unfair that in XY Fairy got a Gym upon creation but Dark is still waiting for its first Gym.

There might be puzzles somewhere else in the game. Maybe you will have to do something in order to participate in the gym.

While I agree with your underlying point, just bear in mind Karen of the Johto Elite 4 was thought to be a part of Team Rocket. Come to think of it, has the Anime actually ever featured a Dark type specialist. I know the games have at the Elite 4 level, Karen and a few others, but the Anime never has shown them.

I'm wondering how exactly these gyms will work. Will we have a tournament style? Maybe a mini E4-like style?

Maybe we will do something inside the stadium itself? It raises some questions on possible outcomes.

Edit: Maybe it will work like a Colosseum like Pokemon Colosseum and XD.

It's possible that the soccer outfit is an outfit you can wear as a part of customization.

Gym Master? I guess we're not going back to normal gyms after all. I'm skeptical about this, to say the least. I feel like odds are that Gym Master is simply a new name for what has always been a Gym Leader, just so they can be different for the sake of being different. And if they do make major changes, let's hope they're changes that actually make a difference for the better.

Guess its confirmed we've got gyms returning. I wonder if they'll end up being like 'mini tournaments' of certain elements since there's a Gym 'master' now rather than a leader. I mean, I know that in the end, it all boils down to being the same format, but hopefully they can do something to spice things up. I don't even need a crazy themed puzzle or anything (though I do admit that the well-thought-out ones are nice); just a spike in difficulty would be cool.

And by a spike in difficulty, I'm not talking about 'higher levels' (although they can't stay too similar one stadium to the next); I'm talking more like an upgraded AI; trainers & leaders/masters that have pokemon that they actually know how to use would be a great start. I think Norman's gym from Gen 3 was actually on to a good concept. If not type themes; maybe stadiums that revolve around having Pokemon with High speeds, High defenses/HP, or maybe teams that rely on combos (like No Guard + High damage/Low accuracy moves).

Please, tell me every time we defeat a Gym Leader, er, Master, your character will slide on their knees while the referee goes "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!"

It'd be nice to see Normal, Grass, Electric and Fairy as the Elite Four, since they're the only types (I believe) that have not been done so far with the E4.

These gyms will not be traditional gyms. There might not even be 8 of them.

I thought that seemed like an odd way to drop such a random piece information.

I wonder what lead to the mistake. Did someone in the social media department simply not know this information wasn't released yet? Is there news planned to be released soon, and this tweet would come after the news, but was accidentally made early? Was this information originally planned to be in the initial reveal, but was removed relatively last-minute? Or something else?

There's not really anything indicating that that's a certainty. It's very possible, but it's not out of the question that they just changed the name of Gym Leaders to make things seem more different. The stadiums certainly don't imply that anything has changed, as a traditional gym could easily be hosted inside a stadium without any changes to the system. We just can't know one way or another without more information.
