• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

Gen8 starter Pokemon what do you want to see?

paipr_christian

grass type fan.
I want at least two of the starters to remain monotype in their final stages. We've had way too many dual types lately, with no single types since Unova. Looking through the thread, I see a lot of dual types that don't make any sense, and are probably just there for the sake of giving the starter a second type. Being overcomplicated is also something I dislike in the more recent starters.

I respect your opinion. But disagree. Water and Grass both have the same number of single type Pokemon as Fire has Fire/Fighting.

I want to see starters use type combos that haven't been used on a starter yet. And counting mono types ( and not M.Evos) that means each starter type (Grass Fire and Water) has only been paired with 5 of 18 possible combinations. Repeating what would potitially be the second most boring combination (first being /Normal) just doesn't interest me. And baring any amazing design with awesome move coverage and stats.... I see myself boxing the monotype quickly.

I would love the final forms to be usable competitively with good stats, typing and hidden abilities. Staters are such threw a ways in the ou scene its very sad

Let's see....
Since I believe in the Zodiacs' theory, I'd love to see a Fire/Poison snake, which in its final form could look like Yamata-no-Orochi.
As for the other two, I'd want a Water/Psychic dolphin and a Grass/Dark plant.

Gotta be honest... And I don't want to any anyway seem like I'm taking away anyone's option to an opinion.

A Fire/Poison snake is so far from what I wanna see. I welcome a Fire snake starter. And I welcome a Fire/Poison starter. But snake = Poison type is to obvious and kinda boring... And while not as a starter... It's definde been done. A Fire/Ground or heck Fire/Electric snake sounds way more interesting to me.

Just my two cents.

And it would be weak 4X to Ground Pokèmon.
I know too well that it wouldn't be an original idea, but I wish I could use something different from a Salazzle. XD
Anyway, don't worry man, you've been extremely polite actually.

I don't really care too much what animals/plants they are based on, but I would like their type combinations to be new and I'd like the second type to be picked up with their first evolution. For example:

Grass > Grass/Fire

Fire > Fire/Ice

Water > Water/Normal

The Fire/Ice type's Ability could be liquefy in which it turns into a pure Water Type, lol. So it has 3 STAB moves but is only weak to Grass and Electric
Grass/Fire could be act as a personal Sunny Day (only affecting this Pokemon) that powers up Grass and Fire type moves and negates charging.
Water/Normal... the ability to drown!

I DO NOT subscribe to the zodiac theory. (Cyndaquil is a porcupine, not a rat & Fennekin is a fox, not a dog.) That being said, there are only so many animals to choose from as a base; it'll only be a matter of time before the zodiac is actually used up for real. Meanwhile, here's a pair of non-zodiac fire-types:

Roadrunner - It'd be a HUGE glass cannon that would outrace every starter that came before it. It can learn a Fire-type version of Electro Ball called Road Burner. Rev + Avian = Revian (Fire/Flying) evolves into Road + Geococcyx = Roacyx (Fire/Flying) and again into Nitro + Geococcyx = Nitrocyx (Fire/Electric).

Mustelids - Cute and cuddly weasel that becomes a bulky badger that becomes a vicious tanky wolverine. Mustelid + Sear = Mustelsir evolves into Ash + Sett = Ashett (Fire) evolves into Wolverine + Volcano = Wolvulcan (Fire/Steel).

I am hoping none of them look "goofy" in the Last Evolution. I know, goofy is in the eye of the beholder haha. :)
My hope is that the designs are based on something that hasnt been done before and/or that they have a unique/uncommon secondary typing to the traditional grass water and fire. I just want a small new spin to the starters but not too big and super excited to see what they will be. I do like idea of making them after animals that are different or not well known in the animal kingdom such as the platypus or my favorite an Okapi. I do feel Nintendo achieved this for the most part with R/S OR/AS starters in their last evolution.
(rather not have repeats of otters and turtles in starters though they aren't bad ideas)

Fun facts.
The only Grass starters to have dual type in middle stage are also the only Grass starters to have dual types in first stage (ironically also the only starters at all to have dual type in first stage)

The only Water starter to have dual type in middle stage is Gen 3 starter Mudkip, going Water/Ground as a Marshtomp.

Fire starters are 3 for 3 and 3 in a row. With the only middle stages gaining a dual type being the infamous Fire/Fighting trio.

All that to say I do wish more starters at gained a dual type on the middle stage.

thought so. Guess no new type combo for the water starter unless they want to add a new type again lol

Part of why I just want to see new combos for starters. Sure Water/Normal has been done on another Pokemon, but not as a starter.

I second this. Give us the unused Fire Bear idea.
Or a Tasmanian Devil/Tiger.
Or a Fire/Ice Moose.

Mustelids - Cute and cuddly weasel that becomes a bulky badger that becomes a vicious tanky wolverine. Mustelid + Sear = Mustelsir evolves into Ash + Sett = Ashett (Fire) evolves into Wolverine + Volcano = Wolvulcan (Fire/Steel).

I hate to burst your bubble, but we already did this with the rest of Cyndaquil's line: Quilava (a Stoat) and Typhlosion (a Honey Badger, Bulbapedia also suggests some wolverine inspiration as well).

While I don't "believe" in the zodiac theory. I don't mind it. And honeslty wouldnt mind a rabbit, snake, ox, goat, or horse fire starter.

That said my top choice for a non-zodiac fire starter has more to do with a type combo than a creature inspiration.

I want a Fire/Bug starter. It could be based on a fire ant. Or maybe a bombardier beetle. I could see a termite that is this type even a spider. Or maybe a desert scorpion.

Honestly a Fire/Bug starter has plenty of options. And while it have a pesky x4 weakness to Rock attacks and also a weakness to Water and Flying attacks. It also have 6 resistances.
