Well I'm thinking that they'll mostly include popular characters since the ones we've seen thus far like Red and Cynthia are very popular. I think we'll see a few more champions at least and although the chances seem low, I'd be so happy if we see Hoenn's Frontier Brains at the Battle Tree. :3

If popular characters get priority, I could see Brock, Misty, May, Dawn, Iris, Cilan, Clemont and Serena coming back due to their roles in the anime. Bonnie as an NPC, but IDK about Max or Tracey... I don't think they'd be introduced into the game canon solely to be NPC's. And Red is basically an Ash stand-in anyway. I could see them bringing back Jessie and James, then referencing the events of Yellow if they encounter Red or something.

I'd actually like to see Silver again. Since he doesn't have the being a player character thing holding him back, same with Barry.

Yeah, but the thing with Barry and Silver is that they both have a starter, and with Silver his starter is INTEGRAL to his story of personal growth. If they give them one starter or the other, then that decides the canonical starter of their generation's protagonist due to the whole "rival's starter beats yours" pattern. Since they seem so hesitant to make any of the post-Red PC's canon (even poor Leaf), I doubt they'd want to canonize the starters too.

I've always been under the belief that Silver's canonical starter is Totodile, while Barry's is Chimchar.

In the case that the other character does not appear in the game we just have to settle for a name picked by fans(like with Leaf who many people still refer to as Green).
I do expect Elio and Selene to be the most popular ones then.

Or they could just give them the starter that's strong against yours even though it's from another region. Keeping the theme.

And it wouldn't give any player character a canonical, set in stone starter. It would change according to your current one.

Blue and Red are a special case because of GS, it gives them a precedent for their teams but things were quite different then so it really isn't much of one now. Same for them appearing at all really. (Also couldn't red have blue's starter?)

I'm not sure if I expect anime characters to show up in Sun and Moon, much less at the Battle Tree. I think the characters who can be challenged there will mostly be trainers who had very high level pokemon in past games, which explains why Wally, Red, Blue and Cynthia are found there. :]

Blue's name in the game data is Terry, so they're placeholder names not meant to be official. Leaf's name is, in the end, a fan name.

Can we talk about how Nanu is totally Giovanni? Like come on He is related to the gang of this game (I get that he was a cop but still) he uses Persian, his house is filled with meowths, he uses Krokorok which is a ground-dark type (possibly related to how he was the ground gym leader in Kanto and he is extremely mysterious in general like come on.

No, you don't encounter them anywhere in the game.

Not once have I heard of both genders of the game protagonists appear in the anime - it's either one or the other, and that's a choice made by the anime creators I am sure. But in the end, Ash is the main character of the TV show and movies. So I don't see why this is a big deal; they never were too terribly important to the anime beyond being travel companions to Ash (if you boil it down to the bare basics). We can name our protagonists anything we want since day 1 in R/B/Y, so in my view no names are really "canon".
