Let's go to the beach, each.
I don't see any big similarities between May's new design and Shauna's tbh, especially not concerning their skin tone.

Profesco

gone gently
I really feel bad and sorry for all the characters that are getting all these disappointment and hate from fans.
But meh, you'll all get used to it in a few days. You can't do anything about it anyways.

Not speaking for anyone else here, but my complaints about May are more than aversion-to-change willies. She's a negative little girl stereotype now. That's just unfortunate.

People always come to their senses when the games come out, so yeah. I already see all the May fanart in the future.

That's going to be one of the problems. =x

So sly
I'm definitely gonna play as May in OR that way I can imagine a subplot of Matt being over protective of her.

I know, I know, I'm a dork.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
There's already a ton of May fanart in her new design, its floating around tumblr. I do like that May is wearing a tank top now.

I'm worried about the gym leader redesigns. I'm not a fan of the modern moe anime look that's been plastered onto everyone's face, and the X/Y gym leaders are just evidence that Gamefreak has completely forgotten the art of subtlety. I hope they're nothing too radical.

Steven only had his costume updated. I wouldn't worry that much.

Erm, is she? I just see her as dressed for a tropical climate. Other than that, she's just... May, still.

Although my girlfriend dresses in that style and she's 21 so maybe my perspective is just skewed by familiarity

I hope Flannery is literally on fire. Get it? Because she's a fire gym leader. Get it?

Was Viola that obvious? Or Korrina? Yes I know she's doing an axe kick, but I also know that plenty of people mistook her for a Dark-type specialist for whatever reason at first. Heck, there were several debates over Clemont's specialty as well.

Anyway, I actually like the type-evocative designs. I think it fits since most everything else about most Gym Leaders was already very obviously themed.

Really feeling it
Thinking about it, it's pretty natural for the villains to have big redesigns, as they haven't appeared for over 10 years and had a pretty small role in the original games. Leaders, in the other hand, have appeared in B2W2. It would be really awkward to have them undergo severe changes.

This is exactly my problem with May's new design. Between the hairbow, the wide eyes, and the frilly tank top, she looks more like a little girl now, whereas in the originals she could've passed for 12-13ish.

Don't really understand the beef some people are having (some here, some on other websites) with there being more dark-skinned characters, including Brendan's new darker-skinned art and model. This is Hoenn, a region with a clear tropical influence. Game Freak if anything is being more geographically-aware.

This is a problem. Immediately upon seeing May's art I was reminded of the dozens of pigeon-toed female Pokemon characters.

This is a real issue of infantilization of female characters. I mean really, fingers poking your open mouth?

Sometimes it keeps me awake at night knowing that somebody thought Valerie was a good idea.

It doesn't even need to be a tropical region. It's more like Brendan is white and May is pale than Brendan is tan and May is white.

Could you re-word this statement? What are you establishing here? Keep in mind the games are made by an almost-entirely Japanese staff and terms like "white" very, very rarely apply to these sorts of situations. I don't really see how Brendan remotely looks "white" here, both in terms of race and in terms of skin tone.

I didn't even notice Brendan's new skin tone; it's such a subtle thing imo. I'm more concerned about him looking cross-eyed tbh.

Team Magma - Maxie looks like a super villain, plus the glasses. :) Tabitha gets fat after waiting for their comeback. Courtney now looks exactly like her manga counterpart. The grunts, er, don't know.
Team Aqua - Archie looks like a super hero to me of some sort. Matt is now the tough guy. Shelly looks like a model. The grunts now really look like pirates, mate.
Protagonists - What happened to my beloved Brendan and May?! It seems their age regress a bit.
Steven looks the same to me.

Overall: 9/10 I quite like the characters make-over.
