I don't really want them to go back to gyms again so soon. Tbh, I thought that the actual trials themselves kind of sucked, but the totem battles were a lot of fun and provided much more of a challenge than any of the gyms in recent games. After finally breaking the formula I think it'd be a shame if they went straight back to gyms, and we have the Kahunas as pseudo-gym leaders anyway.

I'd still be interested them post-game, though. Gotta do something with those plots of land!

that would be cool if the gyms didn't appear until you became champion

I don't think I ever struggled much with gym leaders since Whitney's Miltank, and I'm usually heavily underlevelled, as in 5-10 levels below the gym leader's pokémon from like the 4th gym onward. I can't recall ever wiping at a gym. I didn't struggle too much with the trials either, only the Mimikyu trial took me by surprise with those brutally hard hits and caused me to wipe. What I like about the Totem battles is that you have to fight two foes at once with only one pokémon of yours, and the Totem gets a stat boost, so they're actually more powerful than their levels suggest.

Peanuts aren't just a nut.
Gen 6 and Gen 7 are too easy.

I feel that Gen 7 so far actually has been kinda challenging, though that might just be my bad battling skills talking. My trainer is still better at showing off her strong fashion sense rather than strong Pokemon. XD

I'm in the 'these aren't sequels' camp, but I do think it's possible that some of the additional content could expand the story past the end of sumo, perhaps like the Delta Episode in ORAS. So, I think it "could" contain some sequel-ethnicity components, but not anywhere near a full story.

My theory/predictions of the game, which could be entirely wrong:

These are going to be packaged and play as an alternative story much like Emerald, Crystal, etc. I think the story will be surprisingly different, overall better then Sumo, but similar enough to warrant complaining from a large section of the internet (who bought it and played it anyway, despite knowing in advance because we're all suckers for Pokémon in the end). I think there will be some merit to the complaining though, as it will likely include some features that had no reason NOT to be in Sumo in the first place. It will have some neat new gimmick though that made sense to hold back on (probably something to do with the different shapes z-crystal Sun twists in the trailer briefly). There will be a few newly accessible areas to explore on the islands (the golf course, a safari zone-like park to catch fossil Pokémon in, etc). There will be another small island to explore, probably visited briefly during the campaign and visited in full post game where we find move tutors.

There will be no Gender bending Characters or inverting their personalities, but many might be in different situations. Instead of freshly moving to Alola, we will have been raised here for several years (perhaps even born there) and we won't need so much hand-holding introduction cut scenes to the idea of Alola and Trials because our character would be familiar with them. Guzma's trial captain/gym leader, and skull will be run by someone else, like Plumeria or Gladion. Lusamine will not be evil, and her husband Mohn will still be around and the family dynamic changed. I think the "evil team" is likely to be the ultra beasts themselves. Looker will feature more prominently, we might see Hau's father (potential champion?).

I think we will get new Alolan forms, perhaps another 15-20, of Johto and Kanto Pokémon that didn't appear in SuMo. We will also get more Ultra beasts, perhaps 5-7. We will get the national Dex this time, and the lack of one in SuMo will have something to do with compatibility issues with the new ultra beasts and alolan Pokémon. New exclusive z-crystals for Pokémon like Mymikyu, Togedemaru and Lycanroc. Our pokémon will follow us in the overworld.

There will be no direct mention of the SuMo story, but if you search in journals or other very side hints, we can find out/piece together that the sumo story happened in an alternate dimension that we actually sort of crossed paths with (via Mohn or something really subtle). YouTubers will make dozens of theory videos to cover it and pick it apart.

One other idea that I have is maybe instead of team skull, we're facing a sort of team of "traditionalists". The idea would be that Alola recently established gyms and an elite four, but many are outraged at the change and what it's done to the trial system Alola always had, so they cause trouble to try and disrupt/end the gyms. In game, you can do both gyms and trials and it plays as a sort of background to the Necrozma and Ultra Beast narrative. My issues with this idea though is that it doesn't connect well to the ultra beasts and legendary side of the story.

Miraculous!
Personally I'd like the Trials to be more engaging. The only really unique one was Mallow's, all the others had battling Pokemon (akin to trainers in gyms) before the Totem (gym leader).

Please, GF, Trials are an interesting concept, but please make them vastly different from Gyms.
(also make Trial Captains more active if possible, if not in Trials then in story or have their own mini arc while you progress).

I'm expecting too much I know.

I agree with a lot of this, except I think Lusamine will continue to be the boss villain. I could see Guzma being a captain/leader if they move someone else around, but he will still be the leader of Team Skull. I am also confident there will not be new Ultra Beasts. The pokedex will not go past 802.

I like one theory I read on twitter that said Necrozma may be able to merge with all the ultra beasts (wasn't Nebby technically from the same dimension as the ultra beasts?) and that makes me think there really is some significance to the new z-bracelet. Necrozma will probably only merge with Solgaleo/Lunala, but it's a cool idea.

I'm expecting most of the game changes will be at the beginning and the end, not so much in the middle, with more to do post game.

Not bad! Most of this seems likely and not too farfetched. But I don't think Pokemon will follow you in the overworld. With the more detailed 3D modeling and the relatively high level of visual realisticity that gen 7 brought, it doesn't seem very feasible.
After all, they decided not to implement the walking animations from Sun and Moon for a reason.

He's in Alola now and seems to have no immediate plans to be elsewhere, so why does it matter if he isn't native? The Region's first Champion is no more native than he is. He seems a bit of an odd choice to make a Gym Leader in any case, but I'd take it if it means actually doing something with him.

As for him being a teaser for the next gen, why? He doesn't even remotely allude to anything that would give us an indication of what wherever he is from is like, much less that that place might be where we'll go next.

Because he propably only visited Alola and don't life in Alola. He is a Rock Star in another Region and there is no indication that he now lives in Alola.

I've heard mixed things about the capabilities of the 3DS on this matter. For one, it has the capacity to store all of that information on it because that's where we got it from in the first place. The lagging happens in battles, and supposedly, having the Pokémon follow you is just matter of the game generating another overworld sprite, like the trainers we battle and NPC's we interact with, which is apparently no big deal to add one more. They'd probably disappear for cut scenes though. The biggest struggle in theory was the work it would take to make the 3D models in the first place for 800+ Pokémon, complete with running and walking animations on a gridless game and they've already done that.

However, I am not a programmer and don't know anything about it so that could all be BS. It could be they made them to keep ahead of the game, so they aren't starting from the ground up if they need them in the future. I lean more towards it happening, but I wouldn't bet on it and I'm not gonna get my hopes up over it. My reasoning is that 1. They exist and 2. They've been semi-hyping Johto and it would be a throwback to HGSS.

But think about it - there's also no indication that he's a travelling star either. He could be one or the other - it's all up for possibility at this point. He may be a rock star from another region, but that doesn't mean he can't be living in Alola to perform right now.

I like this idea (if USUM turn out to be sequels to SM). It would make sense that there would be some native Alolans who object to Alola establishing its own League and Elite 4, who resent the changes to the traditional Island Challenge and believe that tradition should remain unchanged, and who would go around causing trouble and disrupting attempts to complete the formation of the Alola League and/or Gyms. On the other hand, you might have a group of people who want to replace the traditional Island Challenge entirely with the Gym system of other regions. It would be an interesting conflict for the protagonist to get caught up in the middle of.

It could totally be a ruby/sapphire thing where one version caters to one team over the other, or perhaps to shake it up they only exist in one version.

The next Coro Coro might have something. It usually leaks around the 11th +/- 1 day.

Saw this on the Japanese Pokemon site:

Necromancy

Pokemon enveloped in a mystery that is
thought to come from another world to ancient times

Source: http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/usum/

Instead of Necrozma. So it sounds like something that has been or is decaying.

I'm fairly sure that is just Google Translate being a bit wonky. The original text is ネクロズマ, which is how you spell Necrozma in Japanese.

Ah. I see. Wonder if the 'Necro' root could still have some kind of significance there though.

XY, ORAs, and SM had presence at E3 so no reason to see why it would change now. Prolly a trailer and perhaps a treehouse segment.
