I'm restarting this old sticky and combining it with the Berry Glitch one. The old ones were getting really long, and too many long stickies just look messy to me.

~The Pokemon Help Guide for Newbies~

The aim of this Pokemon Help Guide for Newbies is to help answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) by newbies to help them better understand Pokemon: Ruby and Sapphire. This Guide is also partly for reducing Short/Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages (SPAM) in the Serebii Forums. Hopefully, this Guide would aid you and answer your queries.

To get the information you want and access the section more quickly, you can always use the Find option by pressing "Ctrl F".

If you would like to help me in compiling this Guide (I am not a one man powerhouse and I do have a life), pls sent your FAQs to me through Private Messaging (PM). I would edit it if necessary and give you full credit for it.

Section 1 - Questions on Feebas
-----------------------------------------

Where is Feebas?
Feebas appears on Route 119 and appears only in 6 out of the 400+ water tiles in it. In order to get it, you have to fish for it, not surf. If the tile that you are fishing in contains Feebas, it will appear about 80% of the time. I would suggest that you fish about 4 to 5 times per tile in order not to miss Feebas. Once you find a Feebas, catch about 4 to 5 of it and make sure that at least 1 is a female so next time if you need a Feebas you can just breed for it instead of going through this annoying process again. This is a picture of Route 119 courtesy of Turquoise Labs.

As you can see, Route 119 is an enormous road so you will have to do a lot of fishing if you want to catch Feebas. The 6 tiles that the Feebas are in can be changed by the Dewford "Trendy Phrase". Here is a misconception by many people. The Dewford "Trendy Phrase" does not determine the tiles the Feebas are in, it only randomly resets the 6 Feebas tiles. That means that if your friend finds a Feebas in a particular tile with the phrase "Pokemon Navi" doesn't mean that if you set your phrase to "Pokemon Navi", you will get Feebas on that particular tile too.

Which Rod should I use to catch Feebas?
Any fishing rod can be used to catch Feebas but the Old Rod is much preferable as it will only give you Magikarps, Tentacools and Feebas. The other rods will also give you other water pokemon like Carvanha, minimising your chance of getting a Feebas quickly. The Old Rod also has a slower tugging time compared to the other rods, thus maximising your time. However, if you want a higher level Feebas, I suggest using the Super Rod as it gives you only Feebas at a higher level and Carvanha.

How do I evolve Feebas into a Milotic?
Feebas would evolve into a Milotic once it reaches a Beauty stat of 170. Once it reaches the Beauty stat of 170, it will evovle once it advances into the next level. We have no way of finding out the Beauty stat so it would roughly be around the maximum. The way to increase a Feebas' Beauty is to feed it lots of Blue and Indigo Pokeblocks until it refuses to eat any more Pokeblocks, then level it up. If it fails to evolve, then you have to start all over again with another Feebas as the Feebas you are using would refuse to eat more Pokeblocks, thus you will not be able to raise its beauty stats further. Indigo Pokeblocks works better than Blue ones so you may want to feed it more Indigo Pokeblocks. Feebas with the natures Modest, Mild, Rash and Quiet prefers Blue and Indigo Pokeblocks so they would work better. The best place to create Pokeblocks would be Lilycove City, where you would get more Indigo Pokeblocks after blending Berries.

Which Berries produce Blue/Indigo Pokeblocks?
Berries that produce Blue Pokeblocks include Chesto Berry.

Berries that produce Indigo Pokeblocks include Lum (when blended in Lilycove only), Bluk, Kelpsy, Wepear (when blended in Lilycove only), Pinap (when blended in Slateport only), Hondew (when blended in Lilycove only), Cornn and Pamtre Berry.

Berries that produce Blue and Indigo Pokeblocks include Oran, Wiki and Starf Berry.

-----------------------------------------
Section 2 - Ralts: The Actual Percentage
-----------------------------------------

Is it true that Ralts won't appear unless the Pokemon in the front of your team is fairly loyal to you?
No! This is one of the most common mistake spread throughout the net. This is due to Ralts' Pokedex entry:

Ruby: RALTS senses the emotions of people using the horns on its head. This POKéMON rarely appears before people. But when it does, it draws closer if it senses that the person has a positive disposition.

Sapphire: RALTS has the ability to sense the emotions of people. If its TRAINER is in a cheerful mood, this POKéMON grows cheerful and joyous in the same way.

See? That's why people think that Ralts were appear more if your pokemon likes you. Actually if you want to find one with the right stats, ability and gender, prepare to search for a long, long time. Ralts appear only about 4% in Route 102.

-----------------------------------------
Section 3 - Effort Values
-----------------------------------------

What are Effort Values?
Effort Values (EV) is a new feature in Ruby and Sapphire that is designed to help you to gain better stats for your Pokemon in the areas you want. When you battle Pokemon (in the wild or in trainer battles), you will get something called "Effort Points" (EP) together with Experience Points (Exp.). Each Pokemon species that you battle, regardless of the level, gender, stats, nature etc., has a fixed EP that they will give. For example, a Voltorb will always gives 1 EP to the Speed statistics, regardless of whether it is Level 5 or Level 100. However, these EPs, unlike Exp., are not shown to you at the end of the battle, thus, you'll not be able to know how much EPs you receive.

How do Effort Values affect my Pokemon's Stats?
When you battle a certain Pokemon species and defeated it, the game will add the EPs (which ranges from 1 to 3 points) to your EV in 1 or more of your Pokemon's stats. Thus, that particular stat of your Pokemon would advance higher and have a better stat in that area. 4 EVs is equivilant to 1 stat point. Usually rare or highly evolved Pokémon provide 2 or 3 points per battle while unevolved or more common Pokémon provide 1 point. You would not receive the EP if you run away from the battle.

What if more than 1 Pokemon enters the battle?
You would think that EP works like Exp., it gets divide equally to each Pokemon right? No! Logically it would do so but it would be pretty silly to let each Pokemon get a fraction of a EP. Each Pokemon would therefore receive the full amount of EP from that battle. Here is an example to illustrate my point. A Beautifly gives 3 EPs for Special Attack. You want to train up your Alakazam, Gardevoir and Grumpig to get a better Special Attack, thus, you found a Beautifly to battle with. You sent your Alakazam out first, it knocked out 1/3 of Beautifly's HP, then Gradevoir to damage it more and finally Grumpig to finish the move. After the battle, Alakazam, Gardevoir and Grumpig will each get 3 EPs for Special Attack! Thus, if you are fighting an opponent that provides 3 EPs in a particular stat that three of your Pokémon require, you could switch each of them in the battle to gain a total of 9 EPs spread across your 3 Pokémon!

Yes! I can use Effort Values to train my Pokemon to their ultimate stats in every single stat!
Sorry, but you can't do this. In order to balance the game, each stat may only receive up to 255 EPs and your Pokemon can only receive 510 EPs maximum, which means 2 maxed EP stats. You will only have to fight anywhere from 170 to 510 battles in order to reach this cap. After that EPs won't matter to it and there isn't much that you can make it better. You would know if your Pokemon has reached the EV cap, you should go see the woman wearing red-and-white clothes with brown hair and wearing a white hair piece next to the Vitamin shop owner in Slateport City (aka, the Energy Guru). They are both near the south-west location of this town if you are having some trouble finding it. She will give you an Effort Ribbon indicating your achievement, otherwise she will tell you to "try harder". Your EPS are non-erasable. Thus, remember to train your Pokemon wisely. You wouldn't want your precious EPs to go to waste in a stat you would not want.

Using the Macho Brace and Exp. Share
The Macho Brace is an item you'll get after you defeated the Winstrate family. It will double your Exp. gained when battling. Using it while training for EPs is a good idea as it doubles EPs gained as well, considerably reducing your training time. The only disadvantage is that while using it, your Pokemon's Speed will be cut by 50% but don't worry, it will reset back to normal once you remove it. Likewise, when using the Exp. Share, the Pokemon who is holding it will get the full EPs as well.

Using Vitamins
Vitamins are said to give your stats a boost but it actually just adds 10 EPs to the stat. To prevent people from cheating, your pokemon is only allowed to take 10 of a type of Vitamin, giving it 100 EPs. Here are the Vitamins and what they do:

Protein : +10 EV to Attack
Iron : +10 EV to Defense
Carbos : +10 EV to Speed
Zinc : +10 EV to Sp. Defense
Calcium : +10 EV to Sp. Attack
HP Up : +10 EV to HP

However, if you trained your Pokemon prior to giving Vitamins, the number of Vitamins you can use is decreased. Vitamins can only raise the EVs to 100 and not over it.

Using Rare Candies
Unlike the previous games where Rare Candies were avoided, in Ruby & Sapphire, they are actually a plus when used after your EVs have been maxed out since you can do nothing about your stat after that.

Do EVs really matter?
Well, if you are into competitive battling which means battling with a human opponent not in the game itself, EVs can do a lot of difference to your battle result of whether you win or lose. Here is a quote from Team Rocket Elite:

Effort Values really do make a large difference in a Player vs. Player battle. When Effort Values are properly placed, it can mean the difference between surviving an attack or getting OHKO'd (One-Hit Knock-Out). The Effort Value system provides serious players with an advantage, meaning that people who work hard to study the game have an advanage over someone who didn't. In other words, they put in the time and effort, they get results.

However, if you are just playing in-game, it really doesn't matter since you'll most probably win against the computer opponents who mindlessly attacks once you are at Level 100.

Which Pokemon Gives Which EPs?
Here is a complete list divided into 7 sections, each section for each stat and the last for Pokemon which gives mixed EPs. This is taken from Ken J. Egervari's Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire: Games Mechanics Guide.

Section 4 - Evolution: Wurmple and Nincada
-----------------------------------------

What determines Wurmple's evolution line?
There have been many theories about this question and it has appeared many time on the board. Some of the theories include Day/Night Evolution, Gender Evolution and some even claims it has to do with the natures! However all these theories have been proven wrong and this is the correct answer: Random! Yes, nothing determines whether Wurmple evolves to become Silcoon or Casoon. It is random! If you want to save time. I suggest you just capture a Silcoon or Cascoon from the Petalburg Forest.

How do you make Nincada evolve into Shedinja?
Many people have wondered about Shedinja and here's how you get it. First before you evolve Nincada to Ninjask at Level 20, make sure you have an empty slot in your team and a spare Pokeball. When you evovle it with the above criteria, you should get a Shedinja in the empty slot with 1 of your Pokeballs gone. Shedinja is bascically the husk of Nincada that it looses as it evolves, making it fitting to be a Bug and Ghost type. It has only 1 HP but its ability, Wonder Guard, makes it so that only super effective attacks can harm it. For more information, check out the Serebii's Shedinja Pokedex page here

Where do I find Bagon? - Submitted by Abkid56
You will need a Pokemon with HM Surf and HM Waterfall to get to Bagon. Bagon is located in Meteor Falls (Found on Route 115, southwest of Fallarbor). You must enter the cave and head left. You need to use your Pokemon to Surf across the water and use Waterfall to get up the waterfall. Enter through the doorway and head up to the ladder and go through it. Head west, then north, going through the next ladder. Walk past the elderly couple, up near Dragon Tamer Nicolas. Head downwards and choose the left side of the fork. Do not jump past the last little hill and you should see another ladder. Use it. Head south to the water and Surf north to the cave entrance. Surf north in this room and you have reached your destination. You will find the Dragon Claw TM, and quite commonly, Bagon. Please note that Bagon is NOT located in the water, just the land where the Dragon Claw TM was found.

How do I get an Azurill from breeding? - Submitted by Mr CatDog & Abkid56
This pre-evolved version of Marill is actually the weakest Pokemon in the game, but if you need it to complete your Pokedex, here's how you can obtain it. You will need the Sea Incense, - which you can find in the inside of Mt. Pyre, for it.

Unlike other baby Pokemon like Pichu and Igglybuff, you need to attach an item to the female Marill before you give her to the Day Care Lady. That item is the Sea Incense. If the female Marill is not holding a Sea Incense, you will get an ordinary Marill from the egg you receive.

Pls take note that Azurill is a normal type unlike Marill and Azumarill who are water types.

How do I get a Wynaut from breeding?- Submitted by Mr CatDog & Abkid56
This pre-evolved version of Wobbuffet learns some moves that can benefit Wobbuffet when it is evolved (Charm and Encore). Here's how you obtain it. You will need the Lax Incense, which can again be found in the inside of Mt. Pyre.

Like Azurill, you need to attach an item to your female Wobbuffet before you give her to the Day Care Lady. This time, the item is the Lax Incense. If the female Wobbuffet is not holding a Lax Incense, you will get an ordinary Wobbuffet from the egg you receive.

You may also like to know that you do get a Wynaut in the game. An old woman in the hot springs of Lavaridge will give you an egg to take care of. That egg contains a Wynaut.

Mirage Island
The appearance of Mirage Island is completely random. There seems to be some sort of hidden value in each of your Pokemon that determines whether or not the man can see it. Just keep going back to that man in Pacifidlog with different Pokemon on different days. It's even rarer than the chance of finding a shiny, but you might be fortunate. The only things on Mirage Island, though, are some wild Wynaut and a patch of Liechi Berries, but *I think* you can get Liechi Berries from e-Cards anyway. Can anyone confirm this? You can also get a Liechi Berry from the EB Colosseum fix. See below. So Mirage Island isn't exactly one of the most rewarding ventures in the game, unless you don't have an e-Reader. The Liechi Berries are good, they raise Speed when HP drops below 1/3.

Hey Guys

I just got wind of another way to fix the Berry Glitch.

What you need is Fire Red or Leaf Green

[img240]http://www.serebii.net/red_green/intro/05.gif[/img240] [img240]http://www.serebii.net/red_green/intro/06.gif[/img240]

While on the title screen press Select and B Together

[img240]http://www.serebii.net/red_green/berry1.gif[/img240]

[img240]http://www.serebii.net/red_green/berry2.gif[/img240]

Attach the Cables and load up RS

[img240]http://www.serebii.net/red_green/berry3.gif[/img240]

Press Start and Select on the screen that says Gameboy and it'll start transferring

Now yer game can be fixed without a gamecube

Official list from the Pokemon.com website (http://www.pokemon.com/games/videogames/index.asp?articleID=502):

Berry Program Update

In Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, certain berry trees will stop producing berries after you've played your game for one year. Now, there are three different ways to make sure that your berry trees never dry up. It's easy!

Add Jirachi to Your Team with the Bonus Disc -- If you place a deposit to pre-order Pokémon Colosseum at a participating retailer, you will receive a Bonus Disc which contains a special gift -- Jirachi! You will automatically receive the berry program update when you use a Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance cable to transfer Jirachi to your Pokémon Ruby or Sapphire Game Pak.

Play Pokémon Colosseum -- You'll automatically receive the berry program update by using one of the connective features when you link Pokémon Ruby or Pokémon Sapphire to Pokémon Colosseum using a Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance cable.

Visit EB Games or GameStop (US ONLY) -- Take your Pokémon Ruby or Sapphire Game Pak to a Nintendo GameCube interactive display at either EB Games or GameStop to download the FREE update. Contact your local store for more details. If you don't live near an EB Games or a GameStop, click here to see other available options.

When you download your free update, you'll also get a special surprise gift! To get your gift, your game must be set up properly. Here are the requirements:

1. Make sure that your active team has five or less Pokémon in it.

2. You must have saved the game at least once after obtaining Torchic, Treecko or Mudkip from Professor Birch.

If you meet these requirements, you'll receive a very special gift!

The "special gift" is a shiny Zigzagoon with a Liechi Berry, so if you get the patch that way, you don't have to worry about Mirage Island.

Also, if you live in the UK and finish the PAL Pokemon Channel, you can also get Jirachi and fix the Berry Glitch that way.

^ and ^^ don't spam

We don't care how or where you got the berry fix

This is for telling info not babbling on about "Oh, I got my widdle uber Jirachi from colleseum, Jirachi is so 1337"
that too my friend is spam.
With the berry glitch fixed, will colosseum still try to fix your game when it's first put in? and does that take time for colosseum to realise that your game has been fixed

Just to let everyone know, saying that something is spam is spam. :)

Anyways, thanks to Geodude for specifying when you can get TM 36, I asked that question. Also, maybe we could add an item guide or something. Which Pokemon holds Chesto Berries? I am out of them, i used them all for BerryBlocks.

Nice FAQ. You might want to explain what Individual Values (IV's) are also.
oh yeah. And the Acronymn of Effort Values is EV not EP.

Answering the last 4 posts:

1) Thanks, I'll fix that later.

2) Don't think so.

3) Chesto Berries can be obtained from the berry guy in Lilycove (they're one of the random berries he gives you) as well as very rarely from wild Whismur and Loudred. All you need is one, really, since you can grow more from it.

4) The EP/IV/DV sticky will be separate. I haven't gotten to it yet.

I know how to make Mirage Island appear! You need a "Mirage Island-friendly" Pokemon with you. It's entirely random, the Pokemon is...

To get umbreon you have to evolve eevee during the evening when you do it during day time it will evolve into a espeon.

Not in Ru/Sa/Fr/Lg you don't. The evolution of Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon is random, just like Wurmple.
