GIMP Help

I just installed GIMP, and I'm really confused as to how it works. First of all, how do you upload an image saved on your computer to GIMP? I tried with a couple, and an error message came up saying the image is not a valid Win32 application. What on earth is a Win32 application?

Did you download the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment?

You can draw stuff on there, but it does work best when you bring something in to color. You could use the line tool to draw stuff, but that's about the only way you can draw some smooth things on there.

When you get it functional may I suggest getting Inkscape as well?

It said something about GTK and stuff, but I wasn't sure what it was. Does the GTK+2 thing cost anything to download?

So...in order to download any of these GTK packages, I need to download all this other stuff? Sorry, I'm just new to all this, and I don't understand most of it...

Sorry to double post, but I forgot that it's GIMPshop I installed, not GIMP. Does that make any difference?
