Goh's Rival

My idea is maybe introduce the Diploma/Certificate element that is usually awarded for completing the Pokedex in the core series games, and introduce some characters who are aiming to get that as well.

I dunno. Adiploma being the reward for filling the Dex kinda works in the games but in the anime it sounds like a crappy reward for all that hard work. Gou and his rival shouldn't be fighting over something so trivial...

His Rival should be Bede!

Bede is already a Jerk rival in the games
And he's incredibly rude towards Hop but since I doubt that the Bede-Hop rivalry will even exist in the Anime they can make Bede act like a rude jerk towards Goh instead.

Since they aren't following Sword and Shield's plotline, Bede probably isn't endorsed by Rose nor would he be Opal's successor. So this opens up some new possibilities with what they can do with him.

Maybe he would find Gou's goal hilariously laughable and try to get Mew for himself just to tease Gou

Bonus points that Bede is a Psychic type Trainer. Maybe he'd be interested in Mew as well based on that alone.

The diploma wouldn't have to be their goal, however. They could be after Pokemon for their own reasons, while the diploma would just be an added bonus rather than the finish line for either Gou or his rival.

I actually like this sceneario. Specially the bit about Bede finding Goh's goal stupid and calling him on it. Could be the push Goh needed to get better as a trainer and a good excuse to have him battle a bit more.

Hey doesn't come across as the type of character who needs someone to push his buttons but maybe Bede will get introduced and fill that role.

A rival is supposed to be an indiviual that shares the same goal as you so I do not think Go will get one if we take that into account.

Goh's apparently the only idiot in the whole anime universe who's crazy enough to try to catch all Pokemon + Mew. It's...rather unbelievable it took this long to show a character like him (ignoring the fact he was blessed with Quick Ball genes).

(...Even though Origins Red didn't make people wait on that for 8 generations to pass first.)

Not necessarily true. A rival can just be someone who constantly antagonizes you and faces off against you, without having the same goal. Think about Iris and Georgia for example.

Given Mewtwo's orphanage and line about trainer/collectors who mistreat their pokemon, could we actually see Goh get a jerkoff rival? Unlikely but it could be interesting.

Given Mewtwo has been saving pokemon from bad humans, Goh rescuing pokemon from bad trainers as a moral opposite of Team Rocket, or like Ash except the pokemon haven't been abandoned yet and are still with their trainers, would be interesting.

It won't happen because the show is still looking episodic, and the plot sounds too complex for them, but it may have been an interesting new take on things.

Have Goh catch Peliper and liberate the Gatcha pokemon. /s

After watching the latest batch of Journeys dub episodes on Netflix, I've been introduced to Kricketina Kylie. Thinking back to Shane Seeker as well, both of these characters seem to be slight variants on Goh's goal.. not every Pokémon but just a subset, in Shane Seeker's case it's shinies and in Kricketina Kylie's case it's bugs.. This makes them rivals in a way....

The problem however arises from the fact that they were both COTDs.. if they became recurring they could be better rivals.

Now the next question would be: even if they were recurring, how are they true rivals considering they don't want to catch every Pokémon. Well I think just like Ash has battled type specialists at practically every gym he's been to, there's nothing necessarily wrong with Goh's rivals having slight variants on his goal.

How I would think it would work is that each time the rival showed up, Goh and the rival compare how many they've caught of that person's specialty, and then catch a bunch in that episode trying to get ahead of each other.

I don't know how the long-term plot on this would work, but it would certainly make Goh's goal a little more interesting.

Agreed! Really hope Shane and Kylie appear again, they had amazing designs too

There's no real point in giving Goh a rival when it won't make his goal any more interesting. All its gonna amount to is "Oh you caught 200 Pokemon? I caught 300!", then watching Goh go on another pointless catching spree.
