When you buy the painting, go to nook and order it from the catalogue. Put the painting you got from red away, and wait for the delivery.

Your plan fails. Forged paintings won't appear in the catalogue. I bought a Solemn Painting, checked the catalogue. It wasn't there, and Nook said it was a forgery when I tried to sell it.
