Today, I decided, I would play my LeafGreen with the volume on. It's a rare event, because I hate wasting batteries, but I wanted to hear the revamped midis, so I did so. During the gameplay, I spent a long time biking around in poor attempt to hatch my Eevee egg and was nearing the end of Cycling Road. Then suddenly -- out of nowhere juts out this Pokemon roar. It scared the crap out of me, which seems totally wussy, but I don't expect it.

I tried going back down that particular area, but it didn't happen again. As I biked in other places, I kept on hearing random (each different, too) Pokemon noises. I'm going to assume this is normal for all games, but jeez! What's the point? Where the noises occured, there were no Pokemon to make them! And they weren't my Pokemon.

So I'm wondering, has that happened to anyone else? Did anyone get surprised for a moment, or are you oblivious to the random roars?

All I know that I'm not risking the volume again unless I'm in Berry Forest or Lavender Town. The midis there are lovely.

It's a feature in all of the 3rd gen games. You hear the cries of Pokemon that are in the area.

the first time I herd it I was like "WTF!". I though my game was broken. I myself
don't play with sound b/c the music gets boaring. The power problem does not bother me b/c I have a DS,Sp & micro.

When I noticed the random roars, I was like "woah! where'd that come from?" I then decided to research on it and found out it was just a feature. o_O

The first time I heard a pokemon roar was back in Ruby version.

I was like 'uh huh'. It wasn't really a big revelation to me.

I can't remember how I reacted to first hearing the roars. I think it was a "...what?" reaction, and by the second time I realized what it was.

But something always gets to me... and this still surprises me years later... is encountering a wild legendary beast in Crystal. Darn, that battle music always makes my heart skip a beat. It totally freaked me out when it first happened to me. I do like that legendary Pokemon have their own themes now, makes 'em more special. Even the legendary Pokemon encounters in fire/leaf are slight remixes of the normal battle theme.

You too? Man, I used to play my Crystal Version with the volume down, because the music always scared me. I mean,

*normal route music*
then suddenly...
*Legendary Dog Music*
Me; OMGWTF?!?!

Same applies in FRLG w/ the legendary Battle Music when you encounter one of the legendary dogs. Totally unexpected.

Hehe, you would get freaked out on FFXI when you battle an Avatar (one of the summoning creatures you battle and later summon) and listen to its music. That music is has a very dramatic beat to it. I always sweat constantly and my heart REALLY does skip a beat. I fought Shiva when she was a Prime (bad choice for a Lv20 Summoner; Shiva Prime's lvl is at 45 and she's <Impossible to guage!> when you check her strength). I got killed in one hit for 547 damage; I only had 235 hp to start with. Carbuncle was killed in one hit as well. lmao I fought her as Prime 4 times. Everytime I lost I was crying and I almost felt that I peed my pants. o_O

Anyways, back on topic. The Pokemon cries that you hear with the background music gives the game more flavor. It makes you feel as if you are inside the game at that moment.

Does the Pokemon cry signify that it becomes more common or is it just purely for decoration purposes?

Dont abuse the smileys steven. The legendary dogs theme in Crystal scared me too. I turned it off once because it scared me so much.
