The Frubbles one I can let slide because it was Poison Powder so cutting off its airways with the foam I'll let slide. If it was something like Toxic or Toxic Spikes then I'd pissed. Still yeah the battle wasn't as good as I expected until Weepinbell came in. Was disappointed that Jumpluff got such a weak showing. I wanted an epic aerial duel between the two birds.

My problem isn't him using it this time, its using it for literally everything, its being overused, it though it was cool and makes sense but they are using it so much for every damn situation thats its getting annoying.

Well still he is though.

He isn't diferent he is the same dude every region, same personality, same skills, the diference in BW was that he had a good cast with him wich made him less bland than he usually is.

No he hasnt really??? Not in actual battle situations at least.

Well I mean if you really think Kanto and DP Ash are exactly the same that's on you and there's no real point in arguing then. I will agree that he was less bland in BW though, but his new traits that were introduced there still kinda sucked so it didnt really matter.

I liked Frogadier versus GODgoat a good bit, pretty fun battle but that was really the only battle I liked. I feel like they could have fleshed these battles out a bit better than what they did, Jumpluff was used for setup never actually made an effort to attack and just pretty much was bait and all Ash did was bulldoze his way forward with Hawlucha and Fletchinder. Weepinbell was okay, I know it was a monstrous battler and took out the birds but I can't be bothered to care for it too much. It's just not that interesting a Pokemon and its battle didn't bring anything really technical or innovative to the table. Though I thought these Pokemon were waaaaay better than Mienfoo and Machoke and the gym battle overall was a comfy little ride after that train wreck against Korrina. I think this is actually my second favorite gym of XY, I'm putting the Viola battle up there by a bit more. I feel it was a decent upward slope after the last two. Not really bothered by Hawlucha's loss, Fletchinder got that win but it was very boring tbh.

Flame Charging a target a million times until they go down, they did it with Talonflame and Machoke and now this like the third time, something new would be nice. Anyway, the Frogadier battle brought goodness, nice usage of frubble and Aerial Ace, the amount of super effective Grass-type moves(Grass Knot a few times, Razor Leaf, Horn Leech, Leech Seed multi. times) and draining moves it survived was definitely an eyebrow raisers but I just went with it because Ramos didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning anyway. Ramos's personality was amusing, he's pretty much a 10/10. Kalos is doing a good job characterizing its poorly personalized Gym Leaders from in-game, GODgoat slayed and I liked how even though it wasn't very mobile it still put up a decent fight. I was so hoping Clemont would take something from Ramos to maybe train his Chespin better, Grass-type specialist with a Vine Whip Pokemon. Come oonnnn Clemont, be active. Do something to tell me you care about being a gym leader, your strength, your role...?

A pretty relaxing Gym Battle overall and definitely put XY's gyms back on track after the last two.

I really liked that Ash and friends did some simple gardening at the beginning here, but my smile vanished when Hawlucha lost to Ramos's Weepinbell; I love the species, but seeing one slay Hawlucha like that was lame in my opinion. Gogoat vs. Frogadier was a garden-variety match too, and the Gym battle in general was so unbalanced. Sigh.

Also im not sure if anyone is gonna count this but Ash did get a nice piece of development with Ramos and teaching him (I assume) to be patient and what not :)

So this was a fun gym battle. It didn't exceed my expectations but it didn't disappoint. I'd rank it 3rd out of 4th for this saga, before the gym battle with Grant.

I wish that Jumpluff vs Fletchinder was more of an aerial battle to make the animation more dynamic but it wasn't. The animation overall was entertaining enough though. I didn't expect much from Jumpluff anyway. Weepinbell delivered and it was cool to see it dominate so hard. That thing has some strong leaf arms. I would honestly say it was worth it to have Hawlucha be the fall guy for Weepinbell. Gogoat was an anticlimactic final Pokemon.

On Ash's side I'm happy to see Fletchinder get some success in this battle. Frogadier got the strategic role and I love that his frubbles are beyond OP now. It's immune to poison. Ash's main strategic breakthrough was kind of lame but at least it was there!

I'll give it this, it looked cool had wonderful moments like Frogadier vs Weepingbell and Gogoat.

But holy crap did it have eye raising moments like Flame Charge spam.
Ash going for HJK knowing it isn't strong against Weepingbell and the fact that missing causes recoil lol.
But no Team Rocket gives this episode 1.5 more than I woulda given it.

8.5/10

The change in animation of Frogadier's Aerial Ace threw me off so much. Overall, I liked this gym match quite a bit. It is odd that Jumpluff never used an attacking move. It feels like Ramos didn't get a chance to use Solarbeam or something because Fletchinder's speed was so high.

I honestly didn't mind the flame charge spam because it made sense for him to be doing that. Both Jumpluff and Weepinbell had increased speed from Chlorophyll and that was Ash's way of fighting that. It was also the reason Hawlucha got into trouble because Weepinbell dodged his attacks while poison stalling him. Ninja frog doesn't have that problem because he's naturally fast.

Yeah, but spamming one attack makes him predictable, and was annoying for me to watch. Fletch has a long-range attack in Razor Wind, but Ash never bothered varying things up and just tried brute force collisions. And he did the exact same with Nacho Libre, although that couldn't be helped considering its moveset. His battling was rather questionable until he used yung Smogonfrog. It wasn't until then that he applied some strategy and defensive moves to win, which was fun to watch.

Finally Ash learns a lesson about patience. I think this is the first time he's had to learn that lesson when it comes to Gym battles. This alone makes the episode not redundant. Otherwise, people before me have accurately said their peace about this match. There wasn't much to add. It continued the overall pace of the good Gym battles in this series.

The birds were disappointing, considering their coverage...

Given that we always knew that Frogadier would upstage Hawlucha and Fletchinder here, and that the writers could care less about type coverage, I thought Hawlucha and Fletchinder's bad performances here were heavily foreshadowed. :x

I wouldn't call what happened with Hawlucha bad. That was inevitable in hindsight. Fletchinder did get somewhat gipped though. He still should have been able to outspeed Weepinbell, though I do think the length of time the bird spent not moving let the Poison do its work. Not too many issues with this battle to even come close to ruining it.

well, gotta have some questionable moments in these gym battles. Otherwise, Ash would just sweep gyms out like nothing if he actually battled really smart with every move, and that actually would make the gym battles rather bland and boring to watch. Then again, if he had battled with real strategy all the time in addition to instinct, he would have already won at least half the leagues he battled in.

Again, anime does not equate to games, so may as well have Ash win when on major type disadvantage, power disadvantage, etc.

Gonna have to bet that assuming Goomy evolves at some point and gets some decent moves, that it's going to be used in that fairy type gym, and Ash will find some way to squeak out the win with it of all pokemon. That would at least show a total 180 from what it used to be with its fear of fairy types

Yes it did. It looked like cut's animation but it was Tsubame Gaeshi..

I think there was actually a misunderstanding on our part...we all thought the blade hand move was cut when actually it was aerial ace all along...it's just that frogadier can use both its hands and feet to use it...cut is where it grabs a "dagger" with one hand pulls it out, cut something and the "dagger" disappears...

anyways...let's see if I got this right...

Jumpluff only used sunny day and cotton guard before being taken out by fletchinder...would have been nice to see it actually attack..

Weepinbell has slam, poison powder, grass knot and razor leaf...not bad...

Gogoat has razor leaf, vine whip, leech seed and horn leech...so it replaced one of its moves...it had grass knot in the last ep...once again, if goomy had sap sipper...

I still find it sad that we still don't know hawlucha's last move especially since he was the fall guy here...

music was all over the place too...We got the OG "world of pokemon" music at the beginning, the Unova Elite 4 as well as Vs Lysandre...very nice, but very random...

It's funny how people complain about Flame Charge spam. Not like you wouldn't do the same thing against Ramos. If the strategy works then why not use it? Jumpluff didn't get to do anything because ash's attackattackattack strategy happened to work against Jumpluff and god forbid if Ash is actually successful sometimes.

Good episode. Great battles. I actually expected the birds to lose. Hawlucha got a bit raped, but his lack of speed made it understandable. Firebird doesn't have as much of an excuse for losing.. it seemed to pussy out from the poison a bit harder than I though it would. Ninja Frog didn't disappoint.

Really good episode. Unfortunately, Hawlucha became the fall guy, but at least it didnt look like it was weaker than the rest, it just had bad options. The animation was good as usual, however, there was quite a bit of stock animation but I'm guessing it was so the animators could spend time on other parts of the episode. Frogadier was pretty cool like how he entered the battle. 6 gyms left to go!
