Gym Badges

This has been bugging me for a while. In the Pokemon game booklets, it says that some badges raise certain stats of your Pokemon. For example, the Boulder Badge raises attack.

How does this work exactly? Does it give EVs to the Pokemon that were used or what?

Sorry, this just doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks in advance.

I have actually been wondering about that question. I have also been wondering about questions such as what the damage formula for Psywave is.

I've always noticed that when you obtain certain badges, they can raise stats and stuff. I never asked for some reason.

I have never really thought of that, but now you mention it, it is a bit strange...

Um... yeh, what's with that? How does that work? Come to think of it (and having never thought about it before), that does seem extrememly strange.

So it seems that this is something that everyone wants to know, but nobody who's posted here knows the answer to... including me. I really hope someone who know's replies.

Here's what I would assume to be the possibilities:
- It adds some extra EV's to your pokemon (just in your team at the time? all your pokemon? pokemon you catch later? I have no idea)
- It raises that stat of your pokemon (same questions as previous)
- It works by some hidden game mechanic to add extra to that stat (but not to the actual stats in your pokemon's description) while you battle. (Would this work in link battles as well?)
- It doesn't work, it's just a lie/your imagination.

So which is it? Someone who knows please answer!

Hmmm....I have a theory.

Winning a badge and defeating a poweful Gym Leader...raises your Pokemon's confidence. It is said that you perform more better if you believe in yourself, and maybe that's why they grow stronger--the new-found confidence that your Pokemon gains, makes it stronger.

For example, defeating Brock's sturdy Rock type Pokemons increase your ATK stat (I believe...). Maybe it's because, defeating strongly defensive Pokemon...made your party realize that they ARE indeed strong...and that if they beat such sturdy Pokemon, than they must be powerful attack-wise. They then gain confidence.

In short: Believing in yourself gives you unimaginable power. It is that confidence and belief, which unlocks your hidden potential.

I believe the same applies for Pokemon as well.

Here's what I know.

I once read that GYM Badges DO raise the Stats while in Battle. But by an almost insignificant amount. Like 1 or 2 extra points of damage when compared with having no Badges. Likewise, the Defense-raising hold off only 1 or 2 points more. As for Speed... must work the same. =/

I just remember I read that once. In a respectable Pokémon Site. One of those that's down already. I think it was God... um... Pokémon Forever.

If I weren't lazy and there was the chance to clone the exact same Pokémon, I'd test it out. I also remember it said it worked in Link Battles. That means that, at the end, it makes no difference whatsoever. It'll only have an impact when you battle the in-game Trainers or a person with less Badges...

I remember asking this before...And if I remember correctly, the badge provides a 10% increase in the specified stat, but only in the game that you have the badge in. For example, if you trade an Umbreon from Ruby where you have all of the badges, it will not retain the stat boosts in another game without the badges in it.

So how does this work with Base Stats, IVs, EVs, Max Stats and all that? That's what I don't understand.

Looks like people have good theories. I KNOW that it does not change IVs. if it did then all my Pokemon's HP types would change (although I partially want that to happen. HP Flying is not good on Salamence when it already has Aerial Ace.)

~Shadow Espeon~

I did it!!
I agree with orions assesment but sometimes dealing out 2 more HP or getting hit with 2 less helps sometimes. In a really close battle for instance.

Someone who knows please answer!

If anyone is redoing their game right now, check your pokemon's stats before and after a gym, see if there's any change.

I want to know! Please!

This question has been asked before. IIRC, it was said that the stat is raised hidden while battling. So out of battle and while battling you don't see a difference in the stat. But the stat IS raised, you just can't see it. But since most competative battling is done after you've collected every badge and have beaten the Elite Four, it doesn't make much difference when battling.
The only thing I'm wondering, is how it affects the damage formula.

If these gym badges REALLY raise stats, how come my Sceptile ended up having EXACTLY the same stats as when I calculated it with Serebii's IV Calculator?

...this is all very confusing...

Like I said, the stat raises are hidden. They can't be seen in any way except for the results.

What I think is that it adds some EVs & makes you gain more EVs to that state....I'm not realy sure but that's what do I think.
