Gym Battle! Z-Move VS Mega Evolution!! (986)

Sceptile Leaf Blade

Nighttime Guardian
Which is apparently irrelevant to the writers to have him mention beyond his non-Kanto/Alola adventures to a strange point he doesn't remember his Charizard.
He never says he doesn't remember his Charizard. Him mentioning it only creates expectations from older viewers that they're going to bring it back while creating needless exposition that doesn't get any pay-off for newer viewers.

Well, duh. That would be insulting, but he never brings him up around Kiawe for some awesome Charibro moments...with Kiawe's Charigrandpa.
Why would he bring it up? There's no point to the story. All it would do is create expectations that aren't going to get any kind of remote payoff. The plot should focus on the future, not dig up long dead plot points Ash didn't even train himself.

We did get a Zard vs Zard fight..........................Alain vs freaking Trevor

Why would they need to be let in on that? At the time, none of them were planning on battling Ash. Misty was Ash's opponent, and she already knew the same thing Brock knew.
She saw Ash doing some crazy things, but Brock saw Thunder Armor with his own eyes

I was disappointed that Ash used Pikachu in this battle instead any of his Pokemon at the lab.

Only Pikachu could have taken down a Mega Gyarados.

The Guardian of Ruin and Birth
Pokeshipping moments

  • Misty acting Ash if she looks pretty with her keystone
  • Misty asking Ash to give her his Z-ring
  • Misty calling Ash a kid
  • Ash being hyped to battle her
I love how Brock and Misty were unlocking their Keystones with poses they had in the RBY games. It was a great refrence and really payed homage to the original games.

Misty’s Keystone being attached to her scrunchy was the moment.

Misty’s training of both Psyduck and Gyarados showed how much she’s grown. Even using Hurricane to counter Electric Type attacks and trapping opponents with Hurricane and using Rain Dance to trap her opponents was genius.

Counter Shield being referenced? Gotta love the BW title screen they insist putting in every series, a bop. Steelix using Gyro Ball as a counter shield was an excellent called back.

The animation for Brock’s and Kiawe’s battle was amazing and the camera angle was perfect. Steelix totally owned rock the battle field like Gyarados did with the water in Misty’s battle.

Say what you want but one thing about SM is that when they gave you battles, they gave you BATTLES.

One of the best cameos.

Had to rewatch this episodes again. It was good, the animation was absolutely fantastic and especially with the camera angles, a good eye candy, its up there with the best.

However, the battles were only good to decent. Brock vs. Kiawe was the best animated, however it feels half baked and Misty vs. Ash is really good up until the hurricane rain dance trap. First of all, for all the talk about how this is formidable move, what else does misty do asides from trapping the opponent, she never really performs an attack that manages to give ash and pikachu any complications. Furthermore, the conclusion is just clumsy, pikachu quickly escapes the trap like nothing and Gyarados just stands there and takes the z-move, when before it was more than willing deflect attacks. Its not like it was hurt enough to justify this, at the very least Kiawe had tortunator used dragon tail to fight stone edge.

I don't know, i really liked the battle up until that point. Great animation can only take you so far, for my money ill take charizard vs blastoise or charizard vs articuno because even with the limitations, they set out what they wanted to really well.
