Gym Leader Backgrounds

I'm not sure if this should go in another thread, but don't you think that you should do more than just beat a Gym Leader? I think you should meet them before hand or have them serve a purpose after the battle, so it isn't go to the town, beat the leader, get the badge, adn go to the next town.

There already are incentives, like the fact you need them to train to certain levels and still obey, the ability to use HM's and so on. But yeah, it would be cool if there was more to it than stop and go around the plot.

Maybe every other. Every single one could get somewhat frusterating but I definately would be all for the idea.

you should be able to always come back to the gym leader and talk about diffrent things

That would be nice I liike the way they did that with GSC

They did it with Jasmine and Amphy, why can't they do it again?

And Misty, in GSC. But yes, they should be more then just figures, more like normal characters.

Personally, this consternates me.

I'm all for expanding the plot line, but why should you be forced to go above and beyond just because the game wants you to? Why should you be cursed with such terrible serendipity so as to require you to settle the gym leaders' personal affairs instead of going straight into battle? A humanitarian Gamefreak might want you to be, but I'm personally growing a bit weary of needing to go through more than that which you are required to do. If it involved something that every trainer needed to do - such as following a riddle on the front door of the gym to locate where the leader was - I could agree with it, but I'm not so much a fan of making just the protagonist all of these extra things.

yes, I agree with some people it would be cool for gym leader's to have a more characterish feel then just a battling robot who says the same stuff. Maybe more of a mission involved. Like for the first gym leader, you go there and he/she says "An evil, sinister looking person ran in and stole the decorations for my gym!"
And you have to go find them, then when it;s finally time to battle once you beat min/her, you get the badge etc. But when you rechallenge he/she says different things and may be doing something else.
And it'd be cool if you go to the gym at night, the traniers in the gym (excluding the leader) are asleep of something. But some nights they are awake!

This is a great idea! Like have them all ban together with you at the end and take out some evil team(insert name here).

Just like the Pokemon Special manga for those who have read it. Personally, I think having the leaders more involved is a good idea. We had Wallace as the protector of the Cave of Origin but it should be more than that. Kinda off topic, but the leaders need to be more radical. In R/B you had leaders of ranging ages, personalities, and professors (ninja, professor, mob boss, psychic, etc)

Hush, keep it down
Not quite. Like, say you have a Water type Gym Leader. Let's call him......Ross. Yeah, that's a good name.

So you get to (generic town name) and the townspeople tell you about their Gym Leader Ross. You learn that he is a master fisherman and that he often goes to the lake near Generic Town. So you go there and meet him, and he challenges you to a fishing competition not unlike the Bug Catching Contest from G/S/C. Within a certain time limit, if you catch a better water Pokémon than he does, you win a reward and he'll fight you in Generic Town's Gym.

See? It can be made fun at the same time.

I can bet we will delve into a slight backstory, as we have for one GL each generation(RBY=Misty's Boyfriend, GSC=Jasmine & the sick pokemon, RS=Wallace/Cave of Origins) But I wouldn't mind having some more than like "OH no! I forgot my hairbrush! I'll only battle you if you go get it!"

Yeah, and it would still work with a bug catching contest. Also, if you had to do some quest, they could reward you to make it worth the time. Or they could make quests optional.
