Gym Leaders & Elite Four Thread

One thing that really annoyed me about the gyms is that some of the badges are given the same as the types the gym specialises in. I mean, the Bug Badge, I was like, what the heck! I just call the Bug Badge the Beetle Badge, the Fairy Badge the Mystic Badge and the Psychic Badge the Thought badge. Why do you think that they called those badges the same names as the types they represent? I hope that in Pokémon Z or whatever it ends up being called, they are changed.

That's something I actually liked about XY.

I think Valerie is one of the most beautiful Pokemon females ever! Right next to Skyla :}.

THISSSSSSSSSSSSS. I loved Valerie!! I wish she was a bit harder to win over, but she is definitely one of the most gorgeous gym leaders of Pokemon. Even tho her eyes are a bit... weird? But she is adorable overall!

I personally expected more from the Gym Leaders/Elite Four if I'm honest. I think they could be a bit harder, but I found myself cursing more in Black/White than I ever did with Y. At least I can keep fighting them in the Maison. :)

This is just my opinion but, of all the Gym Leaders, Viola is the only one I like. I already forgot most of their names apart from Viola, Valerie and Korrina. Valerie is nice, but still not my taste. The only thing I like about Valerie is the RUMOR that she was from Johto. for E4, Malva is the one I remember. well, why not? She's literally HOT. xD.. I like the concept of the Steel type guy too. since France is the theme, Knights will not be far from it. Dianthia... well she's nice... but I'm a die hard Cynthia fan... and Dianthia is nothing compared to Cynthia... sorry.. =/

Yes! I don't get why here eyes make people so uneasy? They are beautiful! Took no time for me to get used to em either. I loved her eyes ever since I was born!

I think Pokemon X/Y took full advantage of 3D and made Victory Road and the Elite Four a spectacle if I've ever seen one. I laid off the run button for the first time in the game to take it all in. Sadly, I expected a bit more from the group as even on my first play through not knowing what to expect I ended up One Hitting all but one pokemon in the Elite Four including the Champion. Bothered me a bit as none of them even had a chance to beat me. So now i'm going through with gimmick teams

PREACH! while it certainly doesn't affect my overall enjoyment of the game, I'm still disappointed that they got so lazy with the badge names. it would've made more sense if they had made it a Kalos League theme that all the badges shared the name of their type (Bug Badge, Rock Badge, Fighting Badge, Grass Badge, etc.)...but why give only some of the badges regular names and others just the name of their type? it's not like they've run out of words that relate to bugs, fairies, etc.

Well, I mean, I agree with you in that I would have preferred it if they had done that with all of the Kalos League's Badges and not just some of them (just as I would have preferred it if all of the Gyms' exteriors had been individualized as opposed to just three of them, even though overall I prefer for the Gyms to all look the same on the outside), but just looking at it objectively, the words "Bug" and "Fairy" pertain to bugs and fairies just as much as the words "Beetle" and "Nymph" do.

right, the straightforward names are still pertinent, but they violate a five-generation tradition of NOT simply naming the badge after the Leader's speciality type (in English, anyway - I think they had done that with some Japanese badges before: Steel Badge, Ice Badge - assuming Bulbapedia's translations can be trusted).

After playing through X and Y once each, and deeming them really easy compared to past games, I did an all Grass-type playthrough (b/c Grass has the most weaknesses along with Rock) hoping to make it challenging. (Note: I don't use the exp share; gen 6 exp share before the post-game is an abomination that shouldn't exist) I had 6 pokemon for most of the middle portion of the game, then got rid of 2 of them (Exeggutor and Gourgeist) b/c they weren't really needed. My final team for the elite 4 was between lv 61-63 and consisted of
Torterra
Roserade
Ludicolo
Ferrothorn
It was still pretty cake. Only memorable parts (this was about 4 months ago) were vs. Malva where I just used Ludicolo's Rain Dance + Swift Swim and surfed 4 times to sweep her team, and having Ferrothorn tank Diantha's Hawlucha for a bit while powering up with Curse. The other fights were uneventfully easy.

I thought about doing more solo-type runs, but after such an easy time with the Grass type, which has the most weaknesses of any type (shared with Rock), I decided the challenge (or lack thereof) wouldn't be worth the time. I might do a wonderlocke in the future though, perhaps it'll make the elite 4 a bit more difficult.

At any rate, they could have at least given them another pokemon or two that covered for some obvious weaknesses, allowed them all to use mega-evos, given them a stronger rematch team, or made the AI smarter.

Rematch team is my issue lately. I went through a second time to try and have a fun time, nothing special. This game is really built for online, and to be honest i'm not even entirely mad at that, but I shouldn't have dominated the gyms and Elite 4 like I did.

I love Valerie ^^ I think she's really cute. Maybe I just love her design, since her character itself isn't all that special.

Yeah, but it just seems so lazy of them to do that when they still have plenty of different names to choose from.

The problem comes from the fact that they simply kept the Japanese names.

"Bug Badge" and "Psychic Badge" sound good enough in Japanese, since they don't have the same names as the types themselves (Mushi and Esper).
Not that much in English, where they sound a little... uninspired.

(Fairy Badge is the only one with the Japanese Badge name matching the Japanese type name.)

True, but eh. So far, it's just been this once. I'll let them have their "day off," so to speak.

I liked the overall designs of all the leaders. Valerie was pretty, but one would think that with an invasion of the Pokeball factory in her town, she would be a little more concerned.
Korrina and Viola were also awesome, as well as the most memorable for me.

The names were very inspired...not. While the names of the badges don't really affect the gameplay, it's the little things that count.

I liked the steel guy. And what he says to you at the start before you battle him.

Let's go to the beach, each.
I just beat the Elite Four, Drasna was my favorite by far. -fanboy squeal-

I loved her happy personality. I also assumed that she came from Sinnoh given some of her dialogue, but I don't think that was confirmed.

At least her grandparents are confirmed to come from Sinnoh, since she says they're from a region with "tales of the Pokémon of time and space" which happen to be Dragon-types.
