Gyms are actually a challenge

In the old games, all you needed was one or two pokemon that had a type advantage over the Gym leader pokemon, and you were set.

But now, even though I have pokemon that are stronger in terms of type advantage, I need to train them up so they are close to equal to the pokemon the leader has. I went in the Delfwood City Gym with a level 12 Ralts and Taillow, and got beaten by Brawly.

A similar thing happened when I battled Roxanne. I thgought I'd wipe the floor with her using just Treeco. But I had to grab a water type before I was able to win (and if she would have used Rock Tomb more often, I probably woyld have lost).

And, not to forget, they also use those darn healing items all the time.

Well, a Lvl 12 Ralts and Swillow, Ralts has weak Defense so it's res. doesn't help all that must and Swillow is Normal and Flying, and the 6 lvl diffence kinda hurts you too.

I don't think so, you had very weak pokemons with you. I always beat the gyms in the first try because I always train my pokemons more than gym leaders. When I battled Brawly, three of my pokemons were level 21 and one 18. I like training too.

The wild pokemon in most areas, though, seem too weak to give you anything truely useful. And their grouth was stunted, since I tried doing EV's at the beginning (I have put that on hold for now).

And I always try to get my pokemon trained as evenly as possible, so I'm constantly shifting the order from lowest level to highest. If 2 or more are at the same level, then they go in order from most exp needed for the next level to the least

I do the same. Yet still I cannot beat Norman. (Emerald.) But yay for Makuhita and EXP share!

You thought you'd wipe the floor with Roxanne with only Treecko? ...I know I did. I didn't even lose health.

However some gym leaders to watch out for are Wattson (if you picked Treecko as your starter and don't have a Geodude), Norman (very tough Pokemon), and possibly Winona, Liza & Tate, and Juan.

Try with your Marill. Water gun can destroy her Pokemons.
Treeko is not good way to your game. You can't beat Roxanne with it.
Train pokemons in the grass

If you would have read my post more carefully, you woyld see taht I'm at Brawly now. And if you would have looked at my sig, you would see that I have a Marill. And the only place you can really train at Delwood is in the cave.
