I was just pondering this...

How do you portray pokemon gyms? In a lot of the ones in-game, there is some sort of puzzle you have to make it through, and other trainers to fight, and then the show usually have something else weird going on at the gym, and sometimes the gym leader has a totally different side profession going on, and can even kick people out without battling them. So, do you pick one, or ignore them all, or base your gym off one of them, or make up something totally different? And what about gyms where the puzzle doesn't really translate well into a fic? For example, I included part of the Lavaridge gym's obstacles for that battle, but next up is Wattson, where it's just a matter of walking on the floor while fighting the trainers there.

So what do you do? What makes the most sense?

I portray them as challenges to my trainer : Ricky

- sometimes the gym's are easy where he just wlaks in and the Gym leader waits for challenges like Falkners gym

- but say in Bugsy's gym he will have to figure out a way through a forest maze.

and the Gym Leaders pretty much have 3 diffrent tones

- Mean *a brutal fighter, spares no one's pokemon form the ultamite survival*

- Nice *they like to smile and they want to have a good clean fight*

- Un-caring *they mostly like to fight, but do not smile, and just want to win without emotion*

For me, it's different for each Gym. For example, the Cleanwater City Gym from The Quest for the Legends has five junior trainers who must be battled before the leader, but no actual obstacles, puzzles or anything. On the other hand, then we have the Alumine Gym where the leader concentrates on blinding his opponents with strong light and reflective walls while in battle, and then the Acaria City Gym which has a puzzle before battling the Gym leader. Basically, it depends on the leader's preference.

hooray, it's Jetx!
I haven't written OT before, but I say you should try to be original and make up your very own challenge to the gym. It'll also be more interesting to read something you haven't seen before, well, I'd find it interesting anyway... Also do something like Dragonfree's where there is something different in each gym. But don't try to do something completely original in every gym because that will be difficult and could cause writer's blocks. So, yeah. You should do a whole mixture of of things in my opinion. I wouldn't go listening to me as I don't write pokemon fiction anyway. I tried to do a script the other day but it sucked and got closed. ;)

For gyms, my characters

A) locate gym location on pokenav (usually getting lost along the way)
B) enter gym
C) battle gym

Yeah, my gyms are pretty exciting!

I follow the anime style gyms, usually. That's about it. Just enter gym and challenge.

I just portray gym battles as a battle with higher stakes than the average one, on a ready made battle field.

In my story the gym leaders aren't really very formal. They just go through their lives like they usually do, and if a trainer comes into town, they might fight them. If they feel like it. It doesn't seem fair, but in my story there are so many gym leaders it doesn't really matter.

Hm..........so it seems most people go for the clearer enter gym/battle sort of thing, at least some of the time.

And no one uses the show weird stuff? Poor neglected show.

In my opinion, Gym battles should be memorable, and should challenge a Trainer. They should force him to utilize his skills as a trainer, and beyond. Maybe one gym forces a trainer to ride on one of his Pokemon and pass an obstacle course in a set amount of time. Or maybe they must prove themselves worthy by challenging the Leaders lackees before facing the "Big Daddy" himself.

Additionally, I believe every leader should be unique in their approach and skill. Gym Leaders are some of the greatest Trainers in the land, and should be treated as thus. They should always *ATTEMPT* to be several steps ahead of the trainer, and not disgrace their challengers by going soft. Only the trainers who are capable of overcoming these obstacles should go on to compete in the League Tournament.

It's all really up to the writer, and what fits best in his fic.
