Which is better? I like Gyms by far because the battles are cooler. Contests have lame characters and battles. Although Harleys contest was pretty good. However, no comparison to the Gyms. Except Gym 7 REAL botch up there.

Contests, plain and simple.

They give me decent idea's for my fan fic's, infact, when watching come what may again yesterday, I watched how Medicham uses Ice Punches and then creates a saught of ice wall for protection, filled with spikes ^^

Thought of another idea now, yay!

I voted contests. In the anime it is much more challenging and is more fun to watch. In Gym matches the gym leader determines how challenging he/she should be. For instance the gym leader wouldnt send out a pidgeot if a beggining trainer was coming in for his 1st badge. Gym leaders choose pokemon that are reasonable for a challenge. Coordinators have to perform a combonation of moves to please the judges in front of big audience then they have to have a timed match against a trainer who is going to give all their effort to defeating the person regardless of what level of expierence you are at.

Contests please and thanks. I personally wouldn't care if I never saw another gym battle again... Besides, coordinators > gym leaders IMO. <3 There's also a lot more variety for contests, and they're not nearly as predictable, for better or worse.

The battles fine but the beauty act is nothing. There is no Houndoom jumping through hoops of fire. Instead we get a skitty thats barely able to juggle 3 balls.

Are you serious? The coordinators are some of the best developed characters on the show. Grace, The Phantom Masked Coordinator, Drew, Harley, Robert, Kelly, Savannah, Eriko and the Salaryman are all very well written and interesting characters.

I think the reasons the contests have been so fun to watch is because May's opponents are so unique and interesting.

That and the battles are usually very good. (With a few exceptions like the lousy Skitty Vs. Dusclops match)

Although I love Ash's Gym battles too. The Hoenn ones have better scripting then the old Johto or Kanto Gym battles.

It's a toss up for me, I like both, but the contests are really a breath of fresh air. That and literally every contest episode has been a great episode...hmmm. May with a leading role in the show is fantastic, and I love the way the camera gives us close-ups of her body during her Pokeball-throwing shots. They also gave us Kelly, and she's hawt.

I like 'em both.

Contests because they aren't just one battle against an opponent and you get a badge, they're more challenging and that's where more creative thinking comes into place.

1. Which 1 is Savannah again?

2. Grace wasn't good her face expressions were annoying.

I give u credit for the rest. I just wish contests didn't take 2 episodes.

May I ask how so?

They only ever used that appeal once. The rest of them, Haruka's pokémon or otherwise, have actually been pretty impressive.

Eh, for me its pretty hard to decide. I think both sides have their enjoyable aspects and minor faults. I love gym battles because all of Ash's pokémon are totally kick-ass fighting machines that rarely fail to dissapoint. But on the other hand I love Contests because of the unique characters and creative move combinations.
....Bah, I can't really choose between one or the other. They both rock ^^;

Yeah, ok!
I think another amusing thing about the contests is that all of May's opponents fit a different but funny stereotype:

Grace = Total spaz
The Phantom Masked Coordinator = Shy timid boy who hid his dream of being a coordinator from his parents
Drew = Metrosexual and pretty boy.
Harley = gay guy who likes to trick May any way he can
Robert = Er, we don't really know much about his personality, but he fits the "tall, blonde, rich, OMG what are his sexual preferences?" stereotype.
Kelly = Bisexual/lesbian girl who seems to have a thing for May. Literally feels up May's breasts in Lilycove and essentially becomes one of May's best female friends.
Savannah = Determined mother who wants to become a coordinator and has a cute daughter to back her up. That and she's part of some mother organization that find 10 year old boys attractive. (Scary)
Eriko = Jealous girl sterotype who thinks May is interested in her boyfriend
Salaryman = Amusing guitarist who has his mother watch over him
Jessie = Yes she's a coordinator too, too bad she never wins.

And last but not least:

May = One of the best characters on the show in general.

The writers really struck gold by creating such unique characters. It's what made contests so enjoyable.

She's at least bisexual. Because she feels up May's breasts and because I said so. May/Kelly = hawt.

I thought that lady watching the Salaryman was his wife, not his mom.

Contests are more fun for me because they aren't as important in the games. Gym Leaders are pretty much set in stone as far as the pokemon they use, so there are never any real surprises from them. You never really know what kind of freak is going to show up at the next Contest Hall.

Um.... you sure about that? Shuu's just become a repeat of Shigeru at this point, and Robert.... all we know about the guy is that he's very good at contests, [spoil]and he somehow got Satoshi's Yukiwarashi to master Ice Beam[/spoil].

No, that's his wife.

Both are pretty damn good, both offer cleverly-written battle strategies that could never work out in the restrictions of the video games. However, there is an aspect of the contests that bug the hell out of me, and that's the whole judging system. I liked how at first, they'd show a number score in the appeal rounds, but they elliminated that and now we don't know what the hell the judges thought about Haruka in comparison to the other entrants. In the contest battles, the way those bar gauges go down seem pretty damn unrealistic at times.

For that matter, if the battles are fought on an appeal gauge system, why the hell do the writers find it necessary for Haruka to knock out every opponent she faces? I mean, some of the KOs are realistic enough, but at times, it feels a bit unnecessary when the opponent's score is low enough as is, and it's as though they're not giving Haruka's opponents enough credibility (and just adding salt to the wound when it's a really cheap victory). I mean, considering what they've been doing with Satoshi's team in AG, and how realistically they've been making him win, you'd think they'd leave the unevolved cuties' spotlight to contests because they're a method of getting a victory without actually KOing a stronger opponent. Hell, when they're making Haruka KO nearly every opponent, it's almost like they're treating these contest battles as a regular knock-out match, somewhat killing its purpose. Within her entire contest campaign, I can only count about 3 battles she had that ended with her having a better score (only one of them being at the finals; mind you, I'm not counting the time she faced Musashi's Dokucale as Musashi was cheating): Kent's speedy Ametama, Tetsuko's Hellgar, and Kanata's Buupig.

Now, if they fixed this flaw, have more battles end based on score rather than just being one big knock-out fest, and bring back the appeal scores, dammit, then they'd be close to perfect. But hey, they're good enough already, add something new to the series and all.... they're still about even for me in the end, though, but I guess this flaw of the contests would put them a little beneath gyms in my opinion.

:( Why are so many people criticising Drew these days? He's so CAMP! Even moreso than Gary! And he uses words like "finesse" in everyday conversation... where's the love, I ask you? *dramatic head-shake*

As for Robert, he's just a very, very classy version of the typical wise, mysterious super-trainer type. With long, blonde hair. Which means he rocks.

Come to think of it, all the co-ordinators > the trainers on the hair front. Aha, I knew there was a reason I preferred them.
