Gyms, Trials, or Something Else

Pretty sure Gyms will be back, for the simple reason of Sinnoh remakes. I guess they can expand how they work in other mechanics, but I doubt they will bother will that since I suspect they will try something new for Gen 9. The only obvious replacement I can see is introducing Tournaments instead of Gyms and Trials. That would allow for some RNG based progression.

(or give each gym leader a totem)
That would be really clever, actually, and it would give some uniqueness to gym leaders' aces.

Why not a combination of the two?

You could introduce something like Totem Pokemon in tandem with the gyms. For example, making it a requirement to defeat a Totem Pokemon before being able to challenge the gym. I feel like this would make the game a bit more challenging and allow for extra content.

Honestly, I would like Gyms to return.

Sounds like a great idea. Totems can also appear halfway through the Gym. Sorta of like a mid-gym leader.

Although I think it's too early to really say what's coming back right now, but I would like Gyms to come back after an absence in Gen 7. I wouldn't mind if trials remain though.

I'd like a more varying difficulty to gyms. Perhaps change the level range of the trainers/gym leaders pokemon based on how many Pokemon you have caught or the average level of your top 25 pokemon. I thought the trial "puzzles" were too simple.

I lean towards gyms. Trials are too tied to Alolan culture to return, and for some reason I don't see them coming up with another brand new replacement.

I do think totem Pokemon will be back in some regard, though. Maybe stuff like the dead Marowak would be a totem battle now.

Like they change pokemon based on the order you challenge them? Maybe Viridian City gym would have had lvl 10 pokemon if it was challenged first, for example.

That would be brilliant.

Pokemon anime already alluded to the idea that the gym leaders change their Pokemon depending on the level of the challenger.

Hopeful for Gen 8
I hope it is more like a final fantasy save the world game with boss battles that serve as gyms but no actual competition if that makes sense.

Well, trials seem fairly exclusive to the traditional culture of Alola. I honestly think it would not work for any other region, especially totems, who get their stat boosts from Necrozma/Ultra Space (not entirely sure which one lol), something that will remain exclusively Alolan unless the UB plot gets expanded on in further games (which I hope doesn't happen). That being said, I loved the puzzles of trials and found them to be far more entertaining and less frustrating than some gym puzzles. That being said, I liked the regional touch of trials and think that a regional whatever-it-is should be implemented, as long as it makes sense in the context of that region. That being said, I love gyms, and I think that they should be mutually exclusive of the regional trials. Why can't we collect both gym badges AND Z-Crystals/mega stones/whatever the item du jour is?

Wasn't it mentioned/implied somewhere that Ultra Wormholes opened in different regions as well?

That would theoretically mean that any Pokemon could become a "Totem" once bathed in the energy that stems from the Ultra Wormholes.

I fully expect Gyms to come back in a future generation barring the remakes but I would rather see GF keep working on something new and original just like they did with Trials.

Cheren was also upset in B/W2 because he couldnt use his original team. Being the first gym leader.

My thoughts were more like sticking to the linear progression like the games are already but based on how leveled up your teams are the gym's pokemon levels are changed. They could even do this throughout the entire game with regular route trainers too. Somewhat of a difficulty scale based on how fast you are progressing in your own game.

I liked trials but I'll be happy to get back to gyms. Although I wouldn't mind if they perhaps had say a Pokemon be the Gym leader at one point.

What if they opt to sorta conbo the 2. With one being the focus of in game, and the other post game. Or the other is otption side stuff as you progress.

Finish a gym, neato the local Totem Pokemon is now wil challenege you since youce proven yourself (or vice versa). You dont have to do the second bit, but if you do you will be rewarded with a TM or Z-Crystal or other item.

Isn't that sort of what the Grand Trials were though? First you do some trials to prove you're good enough and then you fight the Kahuna/Gym leader. Personally I didn't miss gyms. They were fun, but I feel like Grand Trials were similar enough to them to be a suitable replacement. The totems were occasionally a bit simple (you could cheese a lot of them by poisoning them or lowering their stats a lot because they can't switch), but the fact that they had allies and an inherent stat boost helped balance that out. Some of them like Araquanid and Mimikyu were quite strong. I do wish some of the z-crystals weren't just given away without a trial though (looking at you, Icium Z).
Yeah I wasn't thinking at the time I made that post......

Like others have said, the trials are very tied to Alolan culture, so can’t see them coming back in their current form

That said, I’d love for them to continue down the route of creating something other than gyms. Would be good to take it a step further and create more puzzle based challenges. The trials sort of did this, the one with the Marowak was nice, but a lot of them ended up just being a variation on walk around and battle some Pokémon. Some simple, (or not so simple) puzzles to overcome before the battles would be cool. Now they’ve introduced the concept of ride Pokémon, maybe have ‘trial’ specific ones that you have to use to deal with certain obstacles

I would like to see something like the Stat Trainers concept that GenIV never took advantage of and have opponents who are specialising on two certain stats. That would have been more interesting imo instead of focusing on Pokemon types all the time.
