hardest sonic the hedghog game?

I own the 5th gen
Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (S&K with Sonic 2 lock-on). Two words: final boss.
Pshh... there are no hard one's because I'm so damn good. *club'd*
I thought the old one's were easy to be perfectly honest. Even when I first had them as a little kid I would zip by them within a day (well Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at least... its only 6 levels).
The newer one's are harder for me. Currently trying my hardest at Sonic Riders, ain't too easy...

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the good ol' Master System. That game was almost impossible to master and the likes of Azure Lake act 2 and Scrambled Egg Zone were about as welcoming as the bowels of hell in summer.
I've played pretty much every Sonic game out there, bar Shuffle and Arcade. And if there isn't any Sonic game that is more difficult than this wonderful piece of trash, then I haven't played it.
...and no, SkyPatrol does not count I'm afraid.

I found Sonic Three the hardest, because of this extremely annoying area on Carnival Night. You get trapped in this box and you have to go on a spinning column and some how get below to progress. I've never gotten past that bit - never, I think.

Yeah, I had a hard time getting past that area to until I accidentally figured out how. When you're on the spinning column, you have press up and down several times on your direction pad. Eventually, the column should be low enough for you to get below and progress.

HUR HUR USER TITLE
I used to have trouble in Sonic 1 due to the lack of the spin dash, but I'm a master at the game now, so I really have no problem beating it anymore.
However, my votes for the hardest Sonic games are:
Sonic Advance 2 (try getting all the chaos emeralds WITHOUT a guide)
Sonic Spinball on Genesis (holy cheesecake, that game is almost IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT)
I actually attempted that, and it seems impossible without using a cheat code to make you invincible. D:

Excluding all glitches, I'll list these as one of the hardest Sonic games I played.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: The game is hard at times, espiceally when you reach the Death Egg and anything after that. Harder then usual for a Sonic game.
Sonic Spinball: That game is increadibly hard, I stopped playing it after the first level.

Any old pixelated game. I'm more of a 3-D-ish person, and 2-D dosn't do good for me.
Sonic Riders is easy if you are good with racing games and know how to keep calm. If you're an only child, you're one lucky dog. Considering I've practicly won the game (in the story mode catagory), there isn't much of a point to play it besides unlocking secret characters and stuff for multiplayer.

Sonic Labyrinth, the one in Sonic Adventure DX, seems pretty hard to me. Then again I always grow bored of playing it and never make it past the second level.

And Sonic 3d Blast was also hard as hell for me. I only had Sonic The Hedgehog for Genesis but I played the others in Sonic Mega Collection Plus and with a PS2 controller they aren't that hard.

Why?
I couldn't get past Act 3 of the Marble Zone in Sonic 1, at first, I thought act 2 of that Zone was the hardest Act ever, since I couldn't get past it(even w/ 0 lives at the end of act 2, of course), until (I think) April 2005, 1 month before I got Pokemon Emerald, but that was 11 months ago... When I got past it, I had 0 lives at the end of act 2... Then I found out that Act 3 was even harder for me, when my character's last life went down the drain due to the difficulty, meaning... GAME OVER! But, I know that I could be wrong... In my opinion, the first three(if you don't count S&K) Sonic games that came out for the Genesis have at least one hard point in them, with one of those hard points in first one among those games rock-hard, but not as rock-hard(but close) as the final level of the Super Return of the Jedi game that came out for the SNES(if you heard about it from Gamefaqs, not even the most skilled video game players can beat the final level of that game), but that's another story...
