Super Mario Brothers 2. The original version of the game, not the Doki-Doki Panic clone.
And that, in all honesty, is about the only Mario game I've ever really had trouble with. I'm a little shocked that someone found Sunshine to be difficult, because I've met some pretty dire gamers who completed it within a handful of days. :/

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (Super Mario Bros 2 Japan is you prefer) is the hardest overall... although Mario Sunshine has pretty evil levels and bosses (Retro stages, Manta Ray boss).

But I find Paper Mario 2 to be worthy of mention, as well. As easy as the first game was, as brutally hard as is the second one (the first half of the game give you hidden items to beat the chapter bosses but once you're up to the second half, you're on your own against bosses with upward of 60 HP that can smoke your party in record times). Paper Mario 2's final bosses is one of the hardest final battles I seen in a RPG (and I played a lot of RPGs both recent and oldschool).

But if you ignore those three games, the Mario games aren't terribly hard (although they're not a cakewalk either)... but they still require skill to clear.

Well, that's my opinion. Thank you for your time.

I don't see "Super" anywhere in that title...

I DO see that nobody's gotten far in Super Mario Bros. 2 Japanese... Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in America, released only on Super Mario All Stars for SNES.

After you get past world 8, you go onto 9, then 10, then A, B, C... or is it 8 then directly to A? Whatever the case, the game is ridiculously hard after that.

<EDIT> Same minute post as Zerodius. The first part of my post was directed at Latios Legend. I didn't see Zerodius's post when I posted mine LOL

I guess Super Mario Sunshine. >_>;;; It took me forever to beat that game, finally. You know, I hated trying to drive that damned boat. :/ I still don't really get it.

I'm trying to beat Luigi's Mansion right now. No, it's not a Super Mario game, but it does have the Mario Bros. in it and it's harder than hell to beat Bowser and King Boo at the end >_<;;; I'm really pissed...

I think the Lost Levels is because to me, it's nearly impossible to beat with Mario because of his jump. I have gotten up to 8-4 with Luigi and gave up on it.

Gotta agree with pretty muh everyone. The Lost Levels was the hardest Mario game. Hands down. I remember I reached 8-4, but always got beaten by Bowser... :(

After that, a few aislated Levels in Super Mario Bros. 3 (The fortress before Bowser's Castle. Found it impossible to complete normally, and went with the trusty cloud. :)) and Super Mario World (The Fortress that takes you to the Back Door.) are also very hard. But overall, The Lost Levels is the hardest game as a whole.

Aww... Crap.
I have to say, Lost Levels is teh hard. Now, to my record, I've not beaten many of the Super Mario games ( I think I've beat World and 64 DS... and almost the first one until my All Stars battery crapped out...) But I'm moderatly sure I got so frustrated with it that I never bothered to get past the first world. And Supersagas last boss frustrated the crap out of me... I sometimes try to beat her, but I tend to give up.

And Sunshine, mostly because of issues with the controls, and the fact that even though I had enough Shines to go to the last part, I had to beat all the Shadow Mario things... arrgh. Thats all I can say about that game... "Arrgh" and "I gotta go pee."

And yes, I am moderatly surprised that I found it easier to play 64DS with a D-Pad than to play Sunshine with an analog stick. Yoshi sucked in Sunshine too...

The minute I say Lost Levels, everyone else starts saying it. Yeah, 8-4 was a *****. And like I said, after that is either World 9 or A. It doesn't end at 8. Good luck to you all when you beat 8-4, because it stays about as hard as that after you beat it!

Agreed. Way~ harder than the original. I never got to enjoy this game on the Famicom Disk System but I imported the rerelease for GBA from Japan.

Calling it The Lost Levels works :)
But without a doubt it was the hardest. It was basically a continuation of the first Super Mario, and the difficulty never dropped below how hard level 8-4 was in the first game, it just kept getting even harder, and harder and harder.

Truly an example of the "Nes hard" difficulty.

I hated the fact on NES games you couldn't save it until the world was complete, it wasn't until the SNES came out that you could, so therefore anything off Allstars is easier than anything that came off the NES. I remember playing Super Mario 3 world 6 on the third fortress and not wanting to save because I got so far. That world was the hardest on that game by a mile.

The modern Mario games are nowhere near as hard as those older ones, so you can discard the likes of Sunshine and Mario 64 off the list IMO.
