This seems like a stupid thread, but I'm bored and I'm wondering if anyone has or used to have spyware on their computer before.

This is my story:
We have got Spyware on our computer a couple times, but most of the time It's been my fault. When I was first starting to go on the internet in July 2006 I downloaded Smiley Central and Cursormania, big mistake. 4 days after I downloaded it our computer kept on displaying The blue screen of death and kept freezing so we had to re-install Windows XP. Last year I downloaded WebcamMax and...yep, we had to re-install Windows XP (again)

Now I know never to download crap like that ever...EVER.

I usually make it a point not to download anything, period, unless it comes from an official site.

However, that doesn't seem to prevent malware infections, which I have fallen victim to four times now. Which baffles me, as I only visit trusted sites. But my computer has somehow managed to contract malware from various Wikias twice now, and even once from TVTropes. And the worst part is that it just occurs out of the blue; every time so far it's just popped up and overtaken my computer. And I hate it. I absolutely despise anyone who is associated with malware creation and distribution.

I got it a lot when I was a wee lad, but ever since then I've researched it and have been really interested.

There are other ways to get viruses besides visiting site or downloading stuff.

Back when I was in a college dorm some pretty serious viruses like you described would jump to other computers through the wireless network. Something similar could be happening to you if you are sharing a connection with other people.

What do I do now?
My Dad would always blame viruses on my sister and I when we were younger. He said that Neopets was bringing in all the viruses. To this day I'm not sure if they did, but then again...Neopets does have a lot of ads...Either that or some other kiddy site with pop ups

Back when I was using my older computer with Windows XP installed, I had over 500 infections. There was even a notification that popped up every time I started Windows (although it could have been fake) notifying me that I had viruses. My pages kept crashing and I got the blue screen every thirty minutes. After I installed Internet Explorer 8, however, the problems went away. I think I ran a scan and removed the viruses after getting IE 8. Then I got some antivirus just in case. Years later, I removed my antivirus and installed 3 new antivirus programs and ran 2 full scans with each one. It appeared that I had many threats even after getting AVG so I removed them. Now I'm using my laptop with Windows 7 and 3 antivirus programs (SUPER AntiSpyware, avast!, Malwarebytes).

Not necessarily spyware, but yes, viruses. My dad is rather new to the Internet-saavy ways...so he does his pr0n on IE...Yeah.
I'm my family's virus remover. I use Malwarebytes' Anti Malware, Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot, HiJackThis, and SUPERAntiSpyware. They all work great.

But, I also get really mad easily when I'm working on a computer. I remember this one virus that opened 20 IEs and redirected me to Viagra, and some pr0ns. xD
Another virus happened 2 years ago, it was a rootkit invasion. And the harddrive failed and was destroyed. That was the only on I couldn't fix.

Currently, my grandparents own XP with 1.25GB of RAM (2002)
My parent's computer is also XP with 896 MB of RAM (2006)
And the one I'm borrowing currently is Vistax86 with 4 GB of RAM (2009)

I don't even understand how you get Malware in this day and age, the market has slowly been dropping for the past year now. This is a good thing, but that means pages on Youtube pertaining to Malware won't have much to offer in terms of entertainment.

Wow those systems are getting outdated. Most systems nowadays have at least 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7. My old XP only had 512 MB of RAM and this laptop has Windows 7 with 6 GB RAM.

I used to have ridiculous amounts of viruses. When I was younger I would download every "desktop companion" that I liked that I could find, including things like Stitch, Felix the cat, the Cottonelle puppy, Scat from Ice Age, and several others I can't remember. It slowed my computer down along with the viruses that came with it to the point where mom had to send it in to get it reformatted. XD
