HD support for The Revolution ruled out and a DS look-alike? Anybody?

Gamespot said:
Nintendo: Revolution will be cheapest next-gen console
Reggie Fils-Aime tells CNN/Money that his company expects to undercut rivals; hints at DS redesign, rules out HD support.
The Revolution remains the most mysterious of the three next-generation consoles. With only the barest of system specs and no tech demos little is known about the device--or what is so "revolutionary" about it. So far, its most innovative features are a unique controller and repeated statements by its maker, Nintendo, that it will appeal a vast untapped market of non-gamers.

Today, though, one of Nintendo's most public faces said the Revolution will also stand out from its competition for another big reason--price. Speaking to CNN/Money correspondent Chris Morris, executive vice president of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime predicted that the Revolution would be cheaper than both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

"Value has been a key card for us this generation and we'll continue to play it," Fils-Aime told Morris. "Do I expect us to be at a lower price point than our competition? Yes I do. Have we determined a price yet? No we haven't."

How low will Nintendo go? It's hard to tell. Rumors of a $199 Revolution are running rampant in forums, though there is nothing concrete to support such an assumption. However it would have to be below the only known next-gen price points. Microsoft is selling two Xbox 360 SKUs--$the no-frills $299 "core" Xbox and the $399 standard model with hard drive and wireless remote.

In his interview with Morris, Fils-Aime also reiterated the fact that the Revolution will not support high-definition televisions. "What we'll offer in terms of gameplay and approachability will more than make up for the lack of HD," he said. Both Microsoft and Sony are making much of the 360's and PS3's HD capabilities.

Fils-Aime also implied that the DS will see redesigns, just as the Game Boy Advance has. "As soon as [the DS] was launched, we started looking at ways to tweak it visually," he told Morris.

Discuss how you feel about that predicament ninty may have gotten into... And, is that predicament a triumph or a defeat???

EDIT: Sorry for the title. I wanted to make it an attention-getting title that's partway not true...

Blah. It was already practically confirmed that the Revolution would not support HD. I am pretty interested in this DS redesign though. I would love to buy an even cooler looking DS to add to replace the one I already love. =D (That was not sarcasm =P)

They better do some sort of trade in with the DS. It's now getting annoying with all the GBA updates.

Predicament? How's that a predicament? The majority of the households do NOT have HDTV, and a bunch that do think that all you have to do is plug in the red, yellow, and white cables in and BOOM, HD quality television. Once HD is actually standard, we can worry.

An update, huh? Hopefully the screen won't scratch as easily. What the **** could they have planned, DS Micro, which doesn't play GBA games?

Better features for the DS could be,

Smaller console, not puny like micro, but at least small enough to fit better in most pockets, if you get what I'm saying!

Cheaper, I guess we won't have to worry about that, the micro and new edition SP are much cheaper than the gameboy advance was at launch!

Better backwards compatibility, play it all, including gameboy colour games and the older ones!

More colours, like an NES edition or another Mario Kart DS red DS bundle!

Downloadible MP3s, maybe, the PSP did it, maybe the new DS can to!

Better sound if possible, make it as crisp and pure as the handheld can make it! (Any ideas?)

HD!!!!!! Why not, a High Definition DS would totally kick the PSP's A** 10,000 times harder than it's now! (And it's kicking pretty hard now! :D)

Any other ideas?

I could care less about High Definition. First you complain about graphics, then all of that extra crap Sony has to attach to make their systems sell that Nintendo doesn't have, now its High Definition. Yall should stop your complaining and be happy that Nintendo has atleast allowed DVD's to be played and better graphics. I myself was perfectly happy with my GC and I don't see how the Revolution is becoming a Nintendo DS - besides, what is wrong with Nintendo DS? - I think its awesome.

Yall should stop your complaining and atleast be glad Nintendo is even making a next generation console.

Hero of Legend: You can't expect them to put in HD, MP3 downloads, and the hardware for GBC in there and make it CHEAPER.... It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. You want better sound quality, get a pair of headphones that aren't bargain, $8 ones. Get a pair that's about $20 and stick them in the headphone jack. Boom. Instant higher quality sound.

The fact is that the reason the DS doesn't support GB and GBC games is that they are all old and not made anymore. On the contrary, it would be nice if the DS had a game link slot... *.*

well they have said the micro isn't the succesor to the GBA or DS. Note how they still seel SPs. Also if you pay attention this thing will only be around for maybe a year or so is what Nintendo said. Anyway who cares its not like if you don't have it wil prevent you from playing games.

I don't see what the problem is. I think this is great! It's going to be cheap! I don't care about HD televisions. Unless I get one for my room then it really doesn't effect me. Also, can someone clarrify what a HD (High Definition?) television is and what's so great about them?

Refer to these Wikipedia articles for the answer to your question, theultimatebulk:

And Also the comparison at the bottom of this link before the references:

You'll see that w/o hd-television, that your TV will be having lower resolution, meaning your television will lag further behind the transmission of images than that of HD, and you cannot watch sports shows on Fox w/ just standard-definition, since it broadcasts in HD... You see this on every Fox Sports broadcast: "Broadcasting in HD"...

Know where I can get a pair?

You're just paying a crapload more so stuff looks better, it does absolutely nothing to improve the GAMEPLAY (you know, that thing Sony and Microsoft haven't given a rat's *** about since all this next-gen hype began).

The GBA slot is definitely going to stay in the DS until it is replaced by the next-gen portable console. That's because the DS has the ARM7 processor of the GBA along with the ARM9 processor. Also, the DS has been designed to allow the ARM9 processor manipulate the ARM7 processor and the GBA slot. If the GBA slot (and the ARM7 for that matter) is removed in the redesign, then the overall internal design of the DS would have to be drastically changed while not interfering with the running of current games.

Anyways, I'm glad I waited this long to get a DS. However, if I don't get any new information on the redesign until Christmas, I think I'll just buy the current DS. The same thing goes if it doesn't come out until at the latest Spring 2006. (Which if I think about it is about the same time the GBA SP was released.)

So, there probably making a better DS in various ways, I knew that was happening, and it's those times that make me glad that I can't afford a DS and when I do, I'll probably use it to buy the updated DS.

Good point, I was only making suggestions though!

At least put those things in and make it cheap for the hardware, say 200 -300 dollars!
But also add the complete linkability, for the GBC and GBA games, and be connectable to the Gamecube!

Sorry if my ideas are just a pile of lard! :(

Cheers, that answers a few questions. But reading this article, wouldn't that mean Nintendo is making a mistake considering most houses are going to have a HD TV in the next 2-3 years?

Oh yeah, and call me Bulk, much easier to type.

When was it revealed the Nintendo was making a Nintendo DS update? o_O Could someone show me an official press statement about this. If it's true - the update better be much better than the one from 2004. I do want another DS but if there is an update that is much better than I will just wait.

DJ-Will: I got a pair of Sony headphones from Walmart for $20. They are pretty excellent. Don't go buy a $10 pair of Panasonic you see because I did and those just broke >_>;
