Her Embrace (FMA)

ShadowCloud62

Child at Heart
A random one-shot....

Winry Rockbell was being lulled to sleep by the soft pitter-patter of rain hitting her window. It was a mild shower outside, so she didn't mind the rain tonight. She was in nothing but her nightgown, and as she laid in bed she closed her eyes to the sound of rain.

Pinako was already asleep two rooms down. Den laid down content on Winry's floor.

Winry felt herself surrender to sleep as the sound of rain died down in her mind. She sighed before beginning to dream.

What was that annoying rapping sound?!

Winry sat up quickly, annoyed that someone dare interrupt her sleep. She threw the covers off her, put on her robe, and hurried to the front door, where she heard the knocking.

She quickly opened the door so that Pinako wouldn't wake up.

She gasped at the sight of Edward. She found herself blushing, backing away and stepping to the side to let him and Alphonse in, "Hi." she said.

Edward didn't reply as he sat down casually at the table. "Hello, Winry," Al said politely as Winry closed the door.

Winry suddenly remembered what she was supposed to do. Picking up her
wrench from the nearby desk, she tossed it right at Edward's head.

Ed fell off the chair, the wrench on the floor. He rubbed the sore spot on his head as he yelled, "WINRY, WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR?!"

"You don't say hello?! You simply barge in?! And why are you here, what did you do to your automail now?!" Winry demanded. Deep down she was grinning. She missed yelling at him like this. Another part of her was slightly hurt. What did Ed do to the automail she put all her love into this time?!

Edward paused, then rose, fists clenched tightly at his sides, "Damn! The reason I'm here is because I just need my arm fixed again! It's been hurting a lot lately!"

Winry raised an eyebrow, suddenly ready to pick up her wrench from the floor and hit herself in the head, "Hurting? Your arm? Not your leg?"

"My leg's fine, it's just my arm!!!" Ed yelled, "Now don't hit me next time!"

"I--oh, no....I must've done something wrong when I built it for you..." Winry frantically muttered to herself more than to Ed.

"I'll fix it right away!" Winry suddenly proclaimed, ready to race upstairs to build a new automail.

Ed quickly grabbed her arm. If she began now, she wouldn't be able to sleep, "No. You rest first."

"No!! I have to fix your arm! You won't be able to sleep, I'll be right back!"

Winry fought out of Ed's grasp and soon both he and Al heard her feet pounding on the stairs and then the second floor.

Ed rolled his eyes and spoke, "Stay here, Al." and he began running up the stairs himself.

He found himself in the room where Winry would build the automail. Leaning against the doorway, he said, "You know, you could wait till tomorrow morning."

"No," Winry said frantically as she bit her lip, trying to find her tools, "I have to fix your arm. I'm sorry I didn't make it right. I'm so sorry, Edward.....there's my screwdriver....um, anyway, what was I saying? Oh, don't worry. I'll have your arm fixed in a jiffy!"

Ed sighed, and raised his voice slightly, "Winry!"

"Shh! Do you want to wake Granny up, now shush!" Winry whispered suddenly, beginning to work.

Ed sighed again, slightly annoyed. However he swallowed the urge to yell at her, and instead he let the kinder side of him take over as he walked forward and gently gripped her arm once more, preventing her from working.

Winry looked up slowly at him, a questioning look on her face. Ed smiled softly and took the screwdriver out of her hands, putting it back down on the workdesk.

"Tomorrow." he said, enunciating every syllable clearly.

Winry shook her head, tears suddenly brimming her eyes, "No, Ed. I have to get this one right. I'm sorry the arm I made wasn't as perfect. I have to make you a new one, and this one has to be perfect."

"I said tomorrow, Winry."

"And I say no. Edward, this is important to you, I know how much you need your limbs to be in tip-top shape. I have to make this one right this time."

"Winry--"

"No, please don't say anything," Winry took her arm out of his grip and picked up her screwdriver again, looking down at her work, avoiding his gaze, "if your arm hurts, that must mean I have to make you a new one. I did something wrong."

Her voice was strangely wobbly. Ed knew she was crying. He sighed. He hated it when he made her cry. It seemed he always did that these days.

"I'm so sorry, Ed. Please don't be angry with me. I try the best I can...." Winry sobbed, suddenly putting her head in her arms on the desk.

Ed bit his lower lip, he knew exactly what to do. He picked her up out of her seat and turned her around to face him. She looked up at him, eyes red and puffy.

He shook his head, a silent gesture of telling her not to cry, smiling a little, "I'm not angry. The best you can do is fine with me. I have the best automail in the world, after all."

Winry's eyes lit up, "Really?"

"Yeah. I can wait a day or so. Even if you made my arm out of wood I wouldn't care, I'd know you put your heart into it. That's what counts. That's why my automail is the best. Because your effort is clearly shown and you put love into your work."

Winry suddenly began crying again, this time happy tears, "Oh, Edward...!
That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me!"

"What, I've never said nice things about you before?"

"Ed!" Winry grinned widely and embraced him tightly. Ed was surprised at this, and for a moment he simply stood there, arms limp at his sides.

"Edward, can't you hold me, just this once?!"

After hearing Winry's sharp tone, Ed sighed and wrapped his arms around her.

"See, isn't this nice?" Winry asked gently after a few moments.

"Uh...." Ed was as red as a tomato right now. Good thing Winry didn't see his face right now, "....mm-hmm. This is nice." he replied shyly.

Then he relaxed a little, suddenly finding her embrace comforting, "Yeah," he said confidently, "this is very nice."

Er....okay....that's it, I guess....
