Shadow Lucario
Lone Vanguard
Here we are with the 28th chapter of Hero's Bond. A lot of this chapter deals with Lorin again. Geez, he wants that spotlight. We might have a new main character!
Chapter 28: Fist of Fury
“Where have you guys been?”
Stepping into the Pokémon Center room, Lorin and Hope were greeted by Jayden who had been lying on one of the bunk beds, thumbing through a magazine. Both Lorin and Hope tried to give a response, but it came out jumbled.
“We just went on a walk,” Lorin finally said.
Sitting up, Jayden looked them over, slightly confused. “You went on a walk looking like that? Must have been a short walk.”
The door to the bathroom swung open as Kaylie stepped out. Greeting her friends, she quickly stopped to look them over again.
“Hope, did you go on a date with Lorin?” Kaylie whispered, pulling Hope aside.
“Yeah, but I told him that I really only want to be friends at this point,” she explained. “A lot has happened to him and I felt that if we decided to try a relationship right now, it would jeopardize our goals.”
With a huge smile on her face, Kaylie nodded as she climbed into the bunk bed opposite Jayden. Lorin tried to hide the grin on his face before rushing into the bathroom. Throwing the magazine onto the bedside table, Jayden placed his hands behind his head.
“Well, we’ll need to get some sleep so we can hit the road tomorrow. No gym badge, no Team Lustrous, and no Black Organization; we have nothing to do in this town.”
Kaylie lay flat on her stomach, her chin resting on her hands. “Not unless we start a lemonade stand.”
----------------------------------------------
“Where exactly are we going?”
“Well, there is another gym in Olivine City right? We’ll head there.”
After departing from Cimmerian Town, Jayden had decided that it would be best for them to head towards Olivine City. Taking the lead, Jayden looked into the sky, using his hand to shade his face from the sun.
“No clouds,” he said. “And judging from the position of the sun, it’s only about noon.”
“Think we’ll be able to get there before night?” Kaylie asked, lightly jogging to catch up with Jayden.
“That’s doubtful,” Hope answered. “Olivine is roughly fifty miles from Cimmerian.”
“Well then we’ll get as far as we can and then continue in the morning,” said Jayden.
Kaylie smiled at him, grabbing his hand and holding onto it tightly. Lorin threw an ‘I told you so’ look at Hope, slightly shaking his head. Not too far ahead of the four trainers was a small stand on the edge of the road. A muscular man sat behind the stand, his head rested on his hand. He had long black hair that went to the middle of his back. His eyes had been closed, almost as if he were asleep. His chest rose and fell very quickly, but he seemed to be resting peacefully.
“Hello?” Jayden called, standing in front of the stand.
The man’s eyelids flew open, his steel grey eyes piercing Jayden. Swallowing his saliva, Jayden couldn’t look away as the man stood. He was at least two heads taller than Lorin who was already a bit taller than Jayden. A smile appeared on the man’s face as he sat back down.
“I can tell what hardships you’ve been through and help guide you in solving your current problems,” the man said, his voice very low and gruff. He stretched his arms out to Jayden, palms up.
“This I have to see,” Hope said, skepticism present in her tone.
“Place your palms on top of mine and I will read your past so your future is much brighter.” The man closed his eyes once more, humming slightly.
Looking back at Kaylie and Lorin, Jayden shrugged before placing his hands on top of the man’s. A warm feeling began to course through his body; the man’s humming growing in volume. Flinching, Jayden tried to pull back, but it seemed as if his hands were glued to the man’s. Unable to pull away, Jayden struggled, fear growing in him. The warm feeling had spread to his toes, sweat now rolling down his face. He could feel the sweat drenching his shirt, he could feel the sweat covering his face.
“The troubles you have faced are indeed of great magnitude,” the man said, releasing Jayden’s hands.
The feeling that had taken Jayden over vanished instantly. Looking at his collar, Jayden saw that it was dry. “But…I was just sweating like crazy. What happened?”
“I saw them.” The man’s eyes turned from grey to black and then to white. “Team Lustrous…The Black Organization…”
Silence hung over the group as they all stared off in different directions. Hope began to clench her fists, trying her hardest to not explode emotionally. Lorin began to kick at the ground while Kaylie grabbed Jayden’s arm.
“To have survived against such factions…I commend you,” the man told them. “But your fight with them will continue.”
“Damn right it will!” Hope shouted.
“Hope…” Lorin reached to touch her arm, but she quickly jerked away. Tears began to stream down her face as she stared at the man, eyes wide.
“Hope.” The man stood once more, placing his hand on the girl’s shoulder. “The pain you have endured and the pain you WILL endure…Live true to your name. Do not give up hope. I will show you, the path to your bright future.”
Hope looked up at the man, startled as he clenched her shoulder tightly. As if a movie were being streamed straight to her brain, images began to appear in front of her. The first thing she saw was an image of her as a child, bringing memories of her childhood with it. She saw her Piplup running with her in a forest, her brother not too far behind.
“Your brother…your family…you wish to bring them back together,” the man said, images still appearing in Hope’s mind. “To bring them back together as one, you must first see through the deceit and not waver.”
“…see through the deceit?” Hope repeated almost robotically.
Snapping back to reality, Hope took in a sharp breath, her breathing speeding up. Lorin had been standing in front of her, his mouth moving, but nothing coming out. Without so much as a word, Hope fell into Lorin’s arms, slowly slipping out of consciousness.
“Hope!” Lorin shouted, slightly shaking her.
“What did you do?!” Jayden asked, turning back to where the man should have been standing. Without so much as a sound, the man, and his stand, had vanished. “Is Hope okay?”
“She just passed out,” replied Lorin, putting one of her arms around his neck. “We’ll have to set up camp though. We can’t move much with her like this.”
“Lorin’s right,” agreed Kaylie. “We’ll have to stop for the night and just continue tomorrow.”
----------------------------------------------
“…so my dad told me that it wasn’t my fault after all. Turns out a stray Meowth knocked it down.”
Lying next to a small fire they built, Jayden, Lorin, and Kaylie decided it would be best to have Hope sleep in one of their tents while they waited for her to awake. They had begun to share embarrassing childhood stories, laughter filling the air. Lorin stood, opting to sit next to Hope’s tent, watching her shadow intently.
“I won’t go anywhere,” he whispered.
Lorin heard a very familiar giggle, a giggle he swore belonged to Hope. Peeking in the tent, he saw that she was still sound asleep. Shaking it off, the red head now took a seat next to the sleeping Hope. He took in a deep breath before leaning forward. Using one hand to brush his hair out of his face, and from possibly tickling Hope’s face, Lorin placed his lips on her forehead, softly kissing it.
What took you so long to admit your feelings for her?
A single tear rolled down Lorin’s cheek, much to his surprise. Wiping it away quickly, the boy went from a sitting position to lying next to Hope, staring at the tent ceiling.
By the time you told her how you felt, she only saw you as a friend. And that’s all you’ll ever be.
Closing his eyes, Lorin began to try and focus on something else, but his mind always came back to Hope. He could hear her breathing, feel it on his neck. Turning his head, he saw that she had been facing him as well, her lips pouting almost. Suddenly, her arm rose into the air, startling Lorin. A finger was instantly placed on his lips as if to tell him to not make a sound. Looking back at Hope, he saw her smile and wink, her arm now resting on his side, pulling him closer.
“When did you wake up?” Lorin whispered.
“About ten minutes ago,” she said.
“So what happened? Why did you pass out?”
Hope shook her head. “Not now. I just want us to lie here and not worry about anything like that.” Lorin nodded as Hope snuggled closer, wrapping his arms around her. “Maybe we can work together on how you’re going to properly ask me out next time.”
Lorin couldn’t help but smile. Outside the tent, Jayden also smiled, knowing exactly what happened. Kaylie looked up from her spot on his chest, slightly confused.
“What are you so smily about?” she asked, now smiling herself.
“Oh nothing,” he said. “It’s just that I know Hope is going to be okay.”
----------------------------------------------
“Cyndaquil, Flamethrower now!”
“Magneton, counter with Shock Wave!”
Igniting the flame on her back, Cyndaquil jumped to the side, releasing a stream of fire from her mouth. Her opponent, a creature that appeared as three orbs with two magnets each, shot a bolt of electricity out of one of its eyes. The electricity broke through the fire, striking the ground behind Cyndaquil.
“How were you able to beat her Steelix, Kaylie?” Jayden asked, turning back to a bench not too far from his box on the battlefield. “If Steelix is her strongest Pokémon, then why am I having trouble with this Magneton?”
“Steelix belonged to my aunt, so he’s old,” the girl across the field answered. “Magneton has been my Pokémon since my childhood. It’s my strongest!” The girl rolled up the sleeves of her red flannel, moving her arms in a circular motion. “Now hit them with Sonic Boom!”
“I don’t think so!” Jayden shouted. “Quick Attack!”
Before Magneton could release his attack, Cyndaquil dashed forward, crashing into it in the blink of an eye. The Electric type was mostly unharmed by the attack, shaking it off easily.
“What did you hope to accomplish with that?” the girl asked, slightly laughing. “Magneton hardly took any damage from that move.”
Jayden merely smiled, narrowing his eyes.
“Sonic Boom!”
“Quick Attack!”
Once again, Cyndaquil pushed Magneton back before the latter could attack. Lorin gave Hope a confused look and before he could ask, she shook her head.
“Don’t you see?” Hope asked. “Cyndaquil is striking Magneton before it can release the shockwave. That way she does a little damage AND stops her opponent’s attack.”
“Oh I see now,” Lorin said. “Killing two Pidgeys with one Rock Throw.”
“Flame Wheel!” shouted Jayden.
While Magneton was recovering from the second Quick Attack, Cyndaquil dashed forward again. Flames surrounded her just before crashing into Magneton. A small, metal screech pierced the air as Magneton fell to the ground. Still in midair, Cyndaquil flipped forwards, releasing a stream of fire. The flames hit the Electric type dead on, another metallic screech coming from the Magneton.
“Rats!” the girl said, rubbing the back of her head. “I hate to say it but you win, Jayden.”
Cyndaquil began to jump for joy, ecstatic that she had won. Jayden gave her a thumb up before recalling her. The girl walked over to Jayden and handed him a hexagonal badge. It was a simple grey color that didn’t stand out too much. Clutching the badge tightly, Jayden gave the girl a bow before scurrying back to his friends.
“Congrats man,” Lorin said, patting him on the back. “That makes four; halfway to the Silver Conference.”
A loud explosion sounded from outside the gym, vibrations shaking the building slightly. The loud noise drew the attention of all the trainers in the gym, not one saying a word. Another explosion was heard, this one much closer. Screams and shouts followed, the small tapping of rubble against the wall was heard. This time, the building shook much more violently, seeming as if it would fall apart.
“Hit the deck!” Jayden shouted.
Everyone in the gym fell to the ground. Another loud explosion, another violent shake of the building. Outside, people were panicking, running in all different directions. Flashes of light rained down from the sky. Anything the light touched exploded. A large beam rocketed from atop a tall skyscraper, crashing through the police station. The base of the building couldn’t hold the weight of the slowly collapsing building. Barks and shouts could be heard coming from inside, frightened faces pressed up against the glass. Flying overhead on what appeared to be some type of turquoise arachnid was a man with a white robe. A sinister smile etched its way across his face while he pointed at the police station again. Another white beam fired from the X on the creature’s face, quickly destroying the rest of the police station’s foundation. The building crashed into the ground, dust, screams, and blood filling the air. Floating back to the ground, the man hopped off his Pokémon, the latter’s legs extending to let it walk along the earth.
“Here we are, Metagross,” said the man. “Home sweet home.”
