Hidden Power's Power

Pika Egg

Veteran newbie ^_^
I'm planning on breeding up a few pokemon with HP and was wondering if anyone had a good way to estimate its power. My problem is that I want to hatch all the eggs and check the HP type and power for each one (i.e. ones with good natures) without saving during the process (Since I'd rather not end up with 200 Electrikes, etc sitting in my box..). This means they'll be at Lv.5, so the IV/HP calculator won't be too useful (Unless its stats miraculously match the exact IVs...).

Of course, checking type by battling is easy enough, but estimating power doesn't seem as obvious. I'm thinking for Electrike (HP Ice/Water/Grass), I'll breed Bite onto it and then use Bite and HP against pokemon that're neutral to both. If both attacks do comparable damage/HP does a bit more, I'll keep it since its power is ~60. Of course, I'd do a few trials, ignore Critical Hits, try not to KO any pokemon (EVs might offset the results), etc.

So anyone have any better ideas?

Enter a double battle and use HP on your ally Pokemon. Here's the formula for damage:

Damage = ((((2 * Level / 5 + 2) * AttackStat * AttackPower / DefenseStat) / 50) + 2) * STAB * Weakness/Resistance * RandomNumber / 100

Let's say that the damage you inflicted on your ally is 80. The formula looks like this:

80 = ((((2 * Level / 5 + 2) * AttackStat * AttackPower / DefenseStat) / 50) + 2) * STAB * Weakness/Resistance * RandomNumber / 100

We know the level and attack/defence stats of both Pokemon. I'll take some numbers for example.

80 = ((((2 * 5 / 5 + 2) * 10 * x / 20) / 50) + 2) * 1 * 1 * 100 / 100
80 = ((((2 * 5 / 5 + 2) * 10 * x / 20) / 50) + 2)
80 = ((((1.4) * 10 * x / 20) / 50) + 2)
80 = ((((1.4) * 10x / 20) / 50) + 2)
80 = ((((1.4) * 0.5x) / 50) + 2)
80 = ((((0.7x) / 50) + 2)
80 = ((((0.014x + 2)
80 = ((((2.014x)
x = 80 / ~2
x = 40

HP power = 40

I'm not quite sure if I calculated this right, though. This is too complicated and I think your idea is better..

Actually...I like the idea hehe (I'm an engineer..go figure lol)....I could easily throw the formula into a little program, plug in the stats, damage, etc., have the program average the results of a few trials and voila!

All I'd have to do is get someone with Follow Me to make sure the poor little Lv. 5 doesn't get KO'd by the opponent before it gets to attack :p

When you teach a pokemon HP and its not the type you want it to be, do you just reset and try again? Is there some factor that decides the type or is it truely random?

Same question for power, if its not a power I like, do I just reset and try again or is power not truely random?

^ Pretty much everything you've ever wanted to know about how Hidden Power works.

To answer your question directly though, the type and power are determined by the specific pokemon's base stats (IV's), so resetting and reteaching does nothing but waste your time.

why do you want to be able to figure it out without saving in the process?

Well, when I'm hatching a bunch of eggs (I usually hatch 5 at a time) trying to get a good Nature AND a good HP, I want to be able to check how good each one is before I save. Otherwise I could very well be stuck with boxes of Lv.5's that don't have the right combo.

still don't get your problem with saving. if you don't want to use too many HP TMs, you can just teach it to the father. besides, you can just release the extras.

as for power-checking, i don't think there's really a better way than the ones you've found. once you've found the ones with a decent-powered one, though, plug the best few into an IV calculator and see which one you'll use. i like metalkid's, it doesn't take more than 4-5 minutes, sometimes less.

...meh...I have this thing against releasing...meh...(and no I don't "feel sad if I release them" or anything like that lol... I just don't release them)

Anyway, I like SoccerPlayer's idea since I get numerical answers and don't have to go based on how much damage the opponent appeared to take.

keep in mind, though, that the random number (right at the very end of the equation) can be anywhere from 85 to 100. so your number might be off by about a factor of 1/7.

Right. Which is why I'd do several trials and average them. I could also have it show max, average, and min for each trial by assuming 85%, 92.5%, and 100% damage.

Hmm I should try what you're doing >_> I have boxes full of lvl 5 Staryus, Heracrosses (Heracri..?), and Lotads

If you want to figure out your HP Power, then you should give the new Online IV Calculator at my site a try. You should be able to get EXACT IVs near level 20, meaning you will know the HP Type and Power as well. I use a different approach in calculating IVs than everyone else in order for this to work.
