Hooray for Redundant Attacks!

Ahh, the pokémon animé. Essentially a cavalcade of attacks from the games that are used over and over again to the point of outright frustration or just pure boredom. The drudgery of Focus Punch, the absolute torment that is Water Gun, the horrendously generic yet omnipotent Hyper Beam and the ever confusing Solar Beam.
Yes, the show is infamous for neglecting a large array of interesting moves found in the games and people often take the chance to complain about it. But surely, underneath all the groans and face palms produced by this repetitive mess, there is but one overused attack that never fails to make you smile? Just one move that, no matter how often it's used, will raise your interest slightly when watching a battle?

A personal favourite of mine is as old as a Stegosauruses' walking stick; Quick Attack.
Quick Attack is nothing flashy. It's not a super death beam of destruction, a ground shattering blow of chaos nor a catastrophic explosion of pure power. It's a simple run and barge technique, no more, no less. But still, I find it difficult to grow bored with this technique. It may sound and look simple, but it's one of the more interesting moves to watch in motion. It can be used both offensively and defensively in a number of ways, from ricocheting off pillars to propelling a pokémon into the air. There is a seemingly endless amount of ways this attack can be pulled off, and I find that it never gets old. I sure as hell know that watching Swellow weave in and out of an onslaught of Ice Beams like a speeding bullet, before ramming into the opponent with full force is never going to bore me~

So go ahead! Waste a few minutes of your life, to write about your favourite over-used fictional techniques in a children's TV show!
It's either this or 'The AJ Poll'.

Yay first post! For me it's fire spin... I love fire attacks, there just fire pouring out of pokemon's mouth, never gets boring.

Yeah, ok!
I have a few overused attacks that I really never get tired of seeing.

Grovyle/Sceptile's Leaf Blade. Yeah, that one should be obvious. Even though we don't even see it everytime the Pokemon is out, it's still used a bit, and I love it everytime.

Shadow Ball. This attack hasn't been overused until AG started, but even though we see it quite commonly now, (and even more so now that one of May's Pokemon knows it), I gotta say I love the attack. It's just a dark ball of energy, yet it's pretty cool in itself. Every Pokemon should have at least one projectile attack, and instead of something generic like Thunderbolt or such on a normal attack, this fits the bill.

Combusken's Sky Uppercut. There's really nothing special about this attack either, after all, it's just an uppercut. (although they tend to make it flashy with Combusken's claws slashing across the ground before it strikes), but damn it's fun to watch.

Maybe because after all the elemental attacks shoved down our throat, it's nice to see a powerful physical attack for once? And who doesn't want to see a Pokemon punched right in the kisser by Combusken?

And last but not least...Bubble/Bubblebeam never cease to amaze me. How a bunch of bubbles can hurt someone is beyond me, but this is Pokemon, so I suppose everything is alright in this world of messed up physics.

I can't really think of any now, but it is funny that Pokemon get get hurt by bunch of bubbles yet Team Rocket can get frozen, burned, electricuted, and blasted off hundreds of times and live to tell about it. :p

That's one of the reasons I love cartoons.

ghost master

the kawaiist thing
I like that Ash's pokemon recently have been getting double team. The only bad thing is he hasnt used to many ingenious combos with it even though its easy to come up with one. So far only Glalie and Aipom know it of his team(unless I'm wrong). Also the another thing that I liked about AG was that they at least broke from the traditional flamethrower, water gun, vine whip/razor leaf. In Ag they came up with substitutes such as ember/fire spin, Muddy water, leaf blade/ bullet seed. Although they still went through cycles of overused attacks such as iron tail, solar beam, or focus punch but at least they eventually phazed out of some of them.

Lil Brother

Just kinda there.
[SPOIL]Volt Tackle! It isn't so overused, but Pikachu has done it quite a lot. It's just so cool to watch. "Pika-pika-pika-pika-pika-pika-pika-PIKA!"[/SPOIL]

Double Team. I haven't seen most of Johto, but it seems to have become popular somewhere down the line of AG. Although it is pretty boring when it's used in the sense of "Which one is the real one?", it's been used in so many creative ways that you can't help but love it.

EDIT: Darn it, ghost_master beat me. >> But Swellow knows it too. I'm having trouble remembering when Glalie used it...

Juputoru

M-m-m-m-onobear?!
RIIFU BUREEDO! Not to be confused with Leaf Blood, or maybe even Blard. The attack kicks *** and so does the Pokemon using it. And it's physical(contact-wise, not type-wise). More on that below.

Aerial Ace. Damn, Swellow can do 480675096 things with that and Quick Attack. See below for the beak-to-beak combat thing.

Overheat. Everytime Combusken or Charizard uses it, god kills a Manene. But it looks so awesome that it can get away with stealing spotlight from Torkoal. And for causing dead Manene.

Generic Lightning Strike is usually bland, but there are times when it produces something badass enough to make up for it. Not often, though. I mean, it's Generic Lightning Strike.

Countercoat isn't used as much as it ought to(Wobby! D:), but Mirrorter is damn awesome whenever it shows up and works. The attacks just bounce off of the Couirrorteoat! And possibly back to me for overdoing the Mirouncoater joke.

Crabhammer is five degrees of cool. Actually, things that are Not Tackle Or Iron Tail but make contact with the enemy anyway generally rock. Mostly because there can be more to them than FIRE OFF BEAM or SHOOT COLORED SPHERES or LAUNCH OTHER OBJECTS OR FORCES AT OPPONENT. Plus hand-to-hand(or paw, or claw, or foot, or pinsir, or wing, or...) combat is inheritantly cooler than GENERIC ENERGY ATTACKS.

I like Volt Tackle, too. With such a powerful attack like that, it makes Pikachu seem like it could rank among Satoshi's top tiers, which it should as his main Pokemon (seriously, they may over-power Pikachu in the typical Rocket fights and gym battles, but when it came to the Shirogane and Saiyuu tournaments, the little guy kept getting his a** kicked with little accomplishments under his belt). BTW, I don't think it should be spoil tagged, since it used it in Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon.

it used Double Team as a Yukiwarashi when Satoshi was trying to catch it, and once more (that I can recall) in the Saiyuu tournament, against Hyuuga's Lizardon. BTW, one of his Kentauros knows it, too.

And I agree, it's nice to see Satoshi's using Double Team now. After years of going up against opponents that used the technique, I was quite pleased to see Oosubame use it for the first time against Fuu and Ran.

given, he's pretty much the only Pokemon capable of learning the attack, but anyway, I see Leaf Blade as kinda like a sword. They're friggin' everywhere in RPGs and several anime series (especially the katana) but, I don't know, for some reason, it's always interesting to just see slash, swipe, cut, and any other words for practically the same action. Maybe it's because swords actually take skill to use, being a close-ranged attack, and it's always interesting to see how the characters will manage to get in a strike that way (though, likewise, that could apply to any other melee techniques, but Leaf Blade stands out for the "slash, slash, slash" factor ^^). Or, it could just be because swords are so integrated as the staple weapon in several cultures' war history and a good number epic fantasies, we barely take notice of them being "repetitive" because they're practically a given.

Out of the elemental attacks, I actually quite like Flamethrower. It may be simple, it may be over-used, but it's one of those attacks that really give you the impression of a Pocket "Monster". Like the various kaijuu that stream flames from their mouths when demolishing a city, or numerous dragons and other mythical beasts. Seriously, fire breath is to monsters what the afforementioned sword is to humans. This type of attack seems so traditional, it's practically a given in any monster-based game or anime. On top of that, it's actually a very useful technique in the games, so it's not as though they're overpowering some horribly pathetic attack [cough]Mizu Deppou[cough].

Bubblebeam has gotten even better in Battle Frontier, when they added that friggin' nifty steam effect after impact (one of the good things resulting from their recent over-usage of CG). Also, they make the impact that results in that steam seem pretty powerful, so I guess it's actually the speed and pressure of the bubbles that hurt, not simple bubbles themselves (though, they made it looke that way at the start of Mewtwo Strikes Back, but battles back then were crap).

You know, personally, I'd like to see some differentiation between Bubble and Bubblebeam. What ever happened to that foam attack that Satoshi's Kingler used? That's a nice way to demonstrate Bubble being a weak attack, and it could also show off the small chance of slowing down the opponent like in the games.

Focus Punch- The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't seem as cool or important in the anime as it is in the games. I know that Anime =/= Games, but Focus Punch seemed just like a regular punch attack (if not a little bit more powerful).

Solar Beam- This one isn't as cool as it used to be, but then again that's not surprising since it's not neew anymore.

Ampris

Slip slidin'
Needle Arm. There's just something about Cacnea zooming forward and waving its arm around in a crazed circle that I can't help but love^.^

The Big Al

I just keeping Octo
Although I like Thunderbolt as an attack I would have preferred if it was wasn't turned into an explosion maker. Though Pokemon won't show the unlucky victim with arcs of electricty bursting from them as they're fried. What a waste of a great attack.

Actually I don't I like any of the oversued attacks in the anime because I don't like them in general or I don't like who they were designed in the anime.

Korobooshi Kojiro

Funnnngaaaaa
Two Words:

IRONO TAIRU!

Seriosuly, Pikachu learning it lost it's luster quickly........

EDIT: Oh, favorite over-pimped attack, well then I'd say it would have to be Bite, after Arbok and Seviper have been using it for many years, I have yet to see them bite into anything, but I happily await the day they draw blood. XD

Oh, Poison Tail is also cool, as it has the coolest engrish pronounciation ever!

And "Tane Machine Gun", or Bullet Seed.

Oooh, and "ohhhbahito!"

Fire Blast is awesome, even though we haven't seen it since the Silver Conference I believe.
Others include Ice Beam, Aerial Ace, Assist, Shadow Ball, Volt Tackle, Bubble, Ice Punch, Vine Whip, Solar Beam, Dragonbreath, Hyper Beam, and Silver Wind. Yes I know that some are overused but they all are impressive.
