Yes, what I do, is I open up my image. Next, I click "Select All" and copy it (ctrl c). Next I add a new layer and paste the image. Then I delete the original layer, so that it is only the transparent layer. You can use the erase tool or the magic wand to delete the white, or whatever areas you don't want. With the magic wand, you simply click the section you want erased, and it will circle everything of the similar color, then you just hit the delete key, and you will see gray and white boxes indicating that the image is transparent. When you are going to save your image, do NOT flatten it, that will give you the white background in the transparent areas, so just save it as is. Hope this helps.
