How do I make images transparent?

Yes, what I do, is I open up my image. Next, I click "Select All" and copy it (ctrl c). Next I add a new layer and paste the image. Then I delete the original layer, so that it is only the transparent layer. You can use the erase tool or the magic wand to delete the white, or whatever areas you don't want. With the magic wand, you simply click the section you want erased, and it will circle everything of the similar color, then you just hit the delete key, and you will see gray and white boxes indicating that the image is transparent. When you are going to save your image, do NOT flatten it, that will give you the white background in the transparent areas, so just save it as is. Hope this helps. :)

Or another way, open up an image, go to Layer>Transparency> Add Alpha Channel.
Now select the white/whatever you need transparent and hit delete on your keyboard/ or go to Edit>Clear.
Hope I helped..

You do know, that if you just delete it, there will be different outcomes?
You need to "Add Alpha Channel" to make it transparent.
And I don't see any point on doing the " Then I delete the original layer, so that it is only the transparent layer." because you are going to delete the white/whatever on the actual image?

It's still not working. When I go to ImageShack to host it and put it on the post, it has a white background.

Okay, here is an image tutorial. First start with an image that you want to make transparent.http://i42.*******.com/282id5d.png
Then you go to Layers>transparency>Add Alpha Channel. http://i41.*******.com/103bcsh.png
Now you select the color you want to make transparent (white in this case) http://i39.*******.com/rwl9xh.png
Now clear the selection. http://i39.*******.com/bdsfv8.png
Then your result should look like something like this: http://i41.*******.com/fp5oq0.png
You should now save as a file type that supports transparency

It should work, or you could just use a site like lunapic.com or something. :D Besides, I hate using Gimp for transparency, my Gimp is like, messed up because I can't save anything on it. So I just use Lunapic =3

Well.. That's your opinion..
It works fine for me.. Did you put the filetype at the end of the image name such as .PNG or .gif?

Just to make clear that Gimps own File type .xcf and Photoshop .psd and Paint shop Pro .psp file type support Full Transparency, but have LARGE image sizes and not supported online. These files are used if you're planning to continue your work later

Transparency works in .SVG, which is very different to JPEG, GIF or PNG. This file format uses transparency due to the way it draws images. but is unsupported by most web browsers.

so then how would someone WBG a sprite? Are WBG and transparency the same things?

Yes they are, WBG is just a quick thing to say.. And it's mostly a term for sprites since most sprites have a white background and it means "white be gone" which takes out the white..
Gahh, I didn't explain my point clearly..
