While the game boy/DS is ON, Press and hold SELECT + START + A + B (No particular oder) then let go, the game will restart but not the GB/DS.

does your game gets erased after doing it an amount of times or can you keep doing it??

you press select, start, a and b all at the same time and you should go back to the first screen when you normally turn the pokemon game on. this is different in diamond and pearl though

there are no consequences for using it. and as Eevee_14 said, SELECT + START + A + B all at the same time.
