I frequent the IGN boards, and when new D/P news is brought up, people come along and say that the games are incredibly stale and need to drastically evolve. I'm talking about our four-move, turn based battle system. What do you think?

I don't know, a lot of RPG's use the turn system for the "battles" and such.

I don't think it could be like the anime at all, it is too different and of course you had to make your move quick and anime is more offenseive. It is also different, but that is obvious. I mean the mechanics basically.

If it weren't like the turn, it would be like the TOS which is a no-no for pokemon considering you have to keep moving to prevent attack.

The pokemon could have more room for more moves.

I think this is what you mean. ^_^;

I personally don't really mind it. =P I like ToS's battle system, but I also like Final Fantasy's too (such as FF7).

Although the battle system in Pokemon isn't too complicated or anything, either. I don't really mind it at all. I wouldn't mind if the future Pokemon kept the same battling style tradtion.

I'd say keep it.

More than that will be too difficult for me lmao. And I don't really like RPG games anyways.

I own the 5th gen
I don't anticipate any dramatic changes to the gameplay of the main RPG series. They've kept it for the past decade, and they barely did much to it, yet the franchise is still highly successful. Hell, Pokemon's system is hardly that different from the original Dragon Quest, a franchise that's still amongst the most popular in Japan. It's kinda like the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", so Pokemon's not liable to change anytime soon.

However, spin-off games like Mysterious Dungeon are great alternatives to playing with all the Pokemon. More games like that should be highly considered after Diamond/Pearl's released (for that matter, they should make another Mysterious Dungeon game somewhere down the line to include the 4th gen Pokemon, or even the 5th gens if they make one). Also, the fact that physical contact is finally being added to Battle Revolution puts a fresh, graphical spin on a staling system while not drastically altering the mechanics behind it (similarly, as with the afforementioned Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest VIII allowed you to view your characters actually hitting the enemies after years of battles only being viewed in first-person perspectives).

Agreed. Lunar: Dragon Song and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories are prime examples of how changing the battle system of a game series can muck things up. Some companies try so hard to be different and innovative that they actully make the gameplay real bad. And need I bring up how they "over gimmicked" Donkey Kong Country 3?

Yeah, here's hoping that the 4th generation is the last, and instead of spending time advertising tons of new Pokemon, they could better devote their time to working with the 500+ (most likely) they'll have after Diamond and Pearl.

But I'm not saying they should stop making new RPGs like RBY/GSC/RSE and D/P, but in those games they could consentrate on making more of a long and involving plot to it. Look how focusing more on plot in Colosseum and Gale of Darkness worked without introducing new stuff. (looks at Gonbe and Usohachi) Mostly.

Also I'd really like to see the animation sped up in the console games. One of my biggest funks about Colosseum and Gale of Darkness is the battles run off the Stadium engine, and they take way too long, which is frustrating when you're trying to power level.

If they revamp the series, I and doublessly many others will be sorely disappointed.

I like turn-based - I have naturally very slow reflexes and need to take my time to figure out anything interesting. I don't want Pokémon to become a "Who's the fastest button-tapper?" game, and I'm sure everybody who is into competitive battling will agree with me. In fact, doing so would give Pokémon the final stamp as a kiddy franchise, because then there would be no such concept as strategy to it anymore. Just a paper-thin plot people travel through while hammering on buttons. Yawn.

But as Yamato-san said, spin-off games like Mystery Dungeon are the perfect places to do add something fresh to the battle system. I wouldn't mind a real-time battling spin-off Pokémon game at all - I'm sure it could be very entertaining - but please keep the strategic battling in the main series.

I used ta think it was getting a bit boring after a while, tch, but with the introduction of 2-on-2 battles it's really improved alot in gameplay and strategy. ^.=.^

Never change a winning team. The system is still perfect, it doesn't get boring and it is something that makes Pokémon Pokémon. If you make it a real time, it would be no different from a fighting game like SSB.

And also, the current moves, stats, abilities and everything else is adapted to the turn-based battle system. How would moves like Hyper Beam or Quick Attack work? Or Traunt or Speed Boost? They are all fully adapted to the turn-based system and changing the system would also change the moves.

And if you want to get away from the turn-based system so badly, go play another game like Zelda or SSB. But don't go whining about something that would ruin the games if you got your way.

The basic battle system, with four moves, strategy and turn-based and the like, should most certainly be kept. However the animation sequences really need to be spiced up.

It really does get boring after a while to watch your Pokémon´s sprite move forward, and then the opponent´s sprite blinks for a second. And that´s supposed to be a Tackle. I´d like it if in the next generation, your Pokémon was on one side of the screen and the opponent was on the other. You pick your attack and the Pokémon actually dashes forward and hurts the opponent, and the opponent actually has some kind of reaction. Of course, this would require multiple sprites for each Pokémon, but I personally think that the DS can handle that.

Ah, well. Won´t happen anyways.

It can handle that, but it would require drawing like three thousand sprites JUST of the Pokémon. The difference between Pokémon and the average RPG is that there are so damn many Pokémon and all of them may be yours or your opponent's.

Don't mind it. It's convenient when you're playing on and off i.e. while doing homework.

But real time is more fun.
