How do you Voice Chat on MPH?

I got the game yesterday and can't figure out a few things like Voice Chat. I got the volume(both system and on the microphone volume)to max and still i can't hear anyone.

Voice chat only works with friends. People you find on random search cannot be talked to.

To talk in friend games hold the X button.

Unfotunately for me, my MIC is broken [size=-6](darn Mario Kart...)[/size].
