Then again, that's most likely not going to happen. What I would like to see is another tomboy, though even moreso than Misty - perhaps a punk who has stuff like studs and piercings.

Honestly if the writing staff would go through the trouble of adding a major tomboy or punkish girl to Ash's group, they would just be better off focusing on Ash's male companion more instead in my opinion. ^^

I think it would be really nice to get a Pokégirl who was better on her way to becoming Champion than Ash... Maybe a rival who's really just better or even more experienced than he is, whom he is lagging behind like Gary in Gen I. But it's just an idea.

That would be nice, and I would definitely like that, but I'm afraid that the new girl would just steal Ash's thunder. Ash is the main character, after all.

Maybe if they were around the same experience level it would be better.

It would be refreshing, but I don't think it would work cuz I mean look at Iris. I remember her getting criticism when she defeated Ash that one time, so I can imagine a female companion who's stronger than Ash getting similar reactions. :(

That's a good point. People might not take well to someone Ash has to basically overcome as a challenger.

I'd like Serena to stay for the next saga. I mean considering the talk of customizable characters in the next games, there may not even be a new girl to promote. And they always did fine not promoting the male character from the games.

But if she doesn't end up staying, then I'd like the new girl to be a gymleader. There hasn't been a female gymleader sidekick since Misty. And unlike the other gymleaders Ash has traveled with, I'd like to see her battle skills and training actually be shown off.

Quite a few of the strongest trainers we've seen have been female actually, Bertha, Cynthia, Hunter J, Malva, Soledad, Lorelei/Prima and Agatha. But I would like it if Ash's main rival for a region was female too. She could be a mix of differences and similarities with Ash. Plus the inevitable pointless shiptease Ash will get could be better with someone he meets a few times rather than sees everyday, an unspoken crush or mutual attratcion makes less sense the less time it goes on without anything happening.

But with the exception of Soledad and Hunter J, all those characters were Elite Trainers (or champion in Cynthia's case) - which was my point: we don't get a lot of battle competent female trainers unless they are Gym Leaders or Elite Four. As for Soledad, she's a Co-ordinator. Yes, she is strong but I meant someone with a similar goal to Ash's.

And Hunter J wasn't exactly a trainer either.

Technically Iris was based on a gym leader character from the games, but anime did not connect her to the gym in question. Misty wasn't really a gym leader either - that role went to her sisters. Ash just battled her for his badge by default, and Misty never really identifies herself as a Gym Leader until after she leaves the main cast.

That said, I'm not sure I want to see another gym leader in the main cast. The type specialist has been done to death and often goes nowhere.

Misty was one of gym leaders during time she traveled with Ash. She stated it several times. Such as in battle for Totodile against Ash when she stated how she needs to defend her reputation as Cerulean gym leader, In third pokemon movie she said to Molly Hale before battle how she is one of Cerulean gym leaders. When Ash was about to challenge AJ both Brock and Misty were angered for their reputation as gym leaders being insulted, etc. With chronicles showing she just resumed this position.

She was you could say passive gym leader at that time putting her mandate on rest due to going on journey to pursue quest of becoming water pokemon master.

As for whole type specialist thing personally ill be ok with it, but only if it meant investing more in one of previous girls who strives to achieve high positions with pokemon specie they train and are passionate about. Such as Misty offering already ways in how her water pokemon master career and desire to reach E4 level of power could be explored(covered how through previous posts).

Rather than getting after Misty and Iris another girl with who writers would just start something out leaving it unfinished once she leaves main cast. As its been the case with all past females never getting sequel and chance to see already experienced and competent one of Ash past friends being developed on more profound level.

If it's going to be Hawaii, then she should be tanned. Properly tanned.

I hope she has dark skin as well. I liked that about Iris, so I wouldn't mind seeing it again. In fact I wouldn't mind if the writers give her some kind of sport related goal like surfing. ^^

Hunter J was definitely a trainer, she sent her salamence and drapion out of pokeballs and had them use moves against other pokemon, that's like a textbook definition of a pokemon trainer.

Also coordinators are really very similar to league trainers, they have several set places to travel to and challenge, they eventually battle under controlled conditions, they end in one huge conference which is on TV to earn a title of champion/top coordinator. Compared to the other roles (breeders, coordinators are among the most like gym challengers, any many coordinators like Dr Abby, Erica, Kelly, Marina, Zoey, Ursula and Savannah all could be powerful in battle. Besides, there are also lots of female trainers in every pokemon league with mixed degrees of success,

Even in leagues female characters are prominent, Ritchie and Gary loat to women in the Indigo conference while Ash struggled against Jeanette, Macy got a couple of episodes in Johto and beat Jackson, Katie was excellent in Hoenn and Bianca got focus in Unova. Then there are wise characters like the Latias Nurse Joy (in fact lots of Joys are really strong) and Juniper, as well as movie characters like Neesha, Kidd Summers and Juanita.

I'm not worried about them making a weak female protagonist, I'm worried she'll have a boring or poorly defined goal or that too many of her episodes will revolve around ship-tease that will never really go anywhere. That's why I wish Alexa had been a protagonist in Kalos, she'd have been unique as an older female travelling with Ash, would likely not have had ship-tease with Ash (who hasn't shown definite romantic interest in a girl since episode 9), she's knowledgeable enough to fill the exposition role and she can travel with Ash while looking for big stories so it would feel natural for them to travel together. Hopefully someone like her can be a companion this time.

Or Shauna's tone. I really liked how they went for that with Iris. I really love that skin tone and hope to see it again, or even darker.

Got to be honest, skin colour doesn't enter my thoughts at all. They could purple for all I care, I just want a well written character.

I just really hope they have a decent goal. Something measurable that keeps them active. I didn't particularly like Pokemon Contests, nothing will ever come close to classic Pokemon training, but at least they kept May and Dawn on their toes.

Yeah.I loved that dark skin tone of Iris and I would love the next Pokegirl to have the same.I also want her personality to be like Iris even though I know people don't like her.She should be opinionated, strong, confident, determined and adventurous. ^.^

Alexa would have run into the same problems as everyone else in Kalos if she had joined the main cast. She'd be praised for being older and unique for the first 10 episodes before she's deemed boring and useless and her replacement would be welcomed. Alexa doesn't battle either so she'd run into the problems plaguing Serena and would actually be worse off then her too. Serena at least has Performances. Trainers that don't do much that involves using Pokemon in exciting ways on the main cast tend to do next to nothing and become less popular as the show goes on.

Interacting with pokemon doesn't have to be in the form of a competition or battle to be interesting though, I always thought Tracey was cool when he carefully managed to draw pokemon in their natural environment. It would be interesting if Alexa found ways to report on Ash's battles, and then they could publish an in-character blog online with someone writing articles on the main events of the anime as Alexa. Her journey's goal could be to find fame and to learn about all sorts of people interacting with pokemon, maybe win some kind of journalism award. Meanwhile the third protagonist could have some non-gym quest with set competitions.

I now declare the next heroine should definitely have purple skin, and she should also have an unnatural hair color. Maybe dark grey with blue streaks.

In all seriousness, for all I've said about all I despise about the anime, they could win me back if they went with an action route; not just tournament battles but genuine danger. I don't want anything as dark and genocidal as the Yellow arc of Pokemon Special, but something where more than just Ash's pride was at stake would be nice. On that note, I want villains who aren't chumps and I want next heroine to be an action girl; make here a martial arts expert, or give her a gun or a sword or some other weapon, and have her be put in danger by other characters and their Pokemon and be willing to use her own Pokemon to threaten in kind.
