The egg is just so big that baby Onix fits in there xD. Use your imagination. Compare to dinosaurs- the bigger dino, the bigger egg, and that's it. Onix breaks egg's shell with its spike top on its head to get out |:p. Damn, is this answer enough?

Onix can fit inside that tiny little pokeball, why not an egg?
Pokémons "SHRINK" when they go inside a Pokéball. There IS a huge difference between Pokémon eggs and Pokéballs.

Because a Pokeball supposedly incorperates technology that allows very large creatures to fit inside those small balls. Eggs on the other hand, sort of lack that technology.

Edit: Oh what the hell? someone beat me to it..

For the same reason why a Wailord fits in a Pokeball that's smaller then your hand: it's an alternate dimension that is totally different then ours.

In a world where people don't sleep, eat, drink, breath and rest, animals keep getting caught all the time and don't get extinct, cute animals are used for slavery and everyobdy is okay with that, a green wingless snake is able to fly and where it is able to it rain, hail and the sun shines brightly inside caves, this isn't really that weird.

Edit: I think that Eggs are also kept inside Pokeballs and that the egg can be as big as a car.

What exactly is there stopping the Onix offspring from being a lot smaller than an adult Onix? Or the Onix egg being a lot larger than other pokémon eggs?
Its called 'imagination' people.

Of course they're not going to make a freaking baby sprite for every single pokémon, because that would be a waste of time.

the egg that contains onix doesn't hatch , it evolves into onix
Eggs don't evolve, stupid.
Aswell in real life, have you ever seen a chicken egg EVOLVED INTO A CHICK?

He's more than likely refering to how they go about 'hatching' Pokémon eggs in the show. The egg gains the white evolution glow and forms into the shape of a pokémon.

Possibly...young Onix's aren't that huge yet maybe? Maybe they were born small and they grew bigger later....

pikachu!

pikachu?
I think they shrink when they are in the egg and when they hatch they go big? like this (in the egg small) *hatches!* Big Big Big into the normal of the onix sizes

Damn! Pokémons grows up like humans! They're tiny at their birth but when the time passes on, they become bigger and bigger untill they die.
They do not shrink or anything (exept when they do to Pokéball or stuff...>_>...). Do we shrink? NO!

Maybe it's body is spongy and compressible when it's inside the egg and it breaks out when it's ready to grow big and hard. 8D

I think that pokemon eggs are different sizes, like eggs in real life. However, I also believe that pokemon are born small and grow larger as they level up - so an onix egg isn't as big as a car. Also, I assume you can keep eggs in pokeballs - but where do the pokeballs that hatched pokemon are in come from?

I guess eggs are about as big as the pokemon at level 5... so without further ado:
Random equation I came up with cuz I had nothing better to do:

(size of the pokemon) = [(average size)/(square root of average level)] x (square root of pokemon's level)

I may come up with a better one later... this equation assumes that a pokemon (not including evolution) generally grows rapidly at first, with it's growth slowing gradually until level 100. Try it out, I guess.
