it is completely random there are no secrets unless you cheat but one way is to soft reset in fraont of one so that you have a chance of finding one. By the way soft ressetting is when you save in front of a pokemon like evee or groudon and just look at it and if it is not shiny then just turn it off and start again

Like GeminiDragon said. Its random. I caught a shiny Poliwag out of no where. Save in front of legendaries and reset until they are shiny

Don't leave home without an adequate amount of pokeballs! That's how people loose shinies. I bought 99 pokeballs great balls, ultra balls, repeat balls, dive balls, net balls timer balls, premier balls, and the last kind that I always forget. And try not to go where there are roar/whirlwind/selfdestruct/explosion pokemon, and no safari zone.

Get in as many random battles as possible. I have to have been in at least a million battles, and the only shiny I've EVER encountered (besides Red Gyarados on G/S/C) was a Rattata on Gold version (now a Raticate).

You could also try the ironic way of intentionally NOT looking for shinies. Often times when I'm not looking for something I happen to find it. When I found my shiny Rattata, I was randomly riding around near the Day Care waiting for my Pokemon to breed and I accidentally rode into some tall grass. Rattata was the first Pokemon I saw. HOLY **** THE THING IS ALL SPARKLY!!!!!!! So I sent out my HM slave Marill to weaken it before I threw the ball.

Neither do I! Here is a trick: You have to play for awhile. A couples days worth is a good amount of time. If you are really lucky, you can get one in a couple hours. Me, I am the unluckiest person in the world though.

1.Red Gyrados in G/S/C -_- Notin special

2. A shiny girafirig in Gold. It was to weak and almost killed it, and then ran outta balls.

3. YES!!!!!!!! Shiny Regice in Emerald!!
