How is my Squirtle on it's second mission able to do 40+ damage?

OK so I choose squirtle as my starter, and the game made me use Machop as the partner. When I go missions, I can only control Machop, but sometimes when the enemy runs near Squirtle, it automatically does bubble and hits them for 41 damage. Is that normal???? What's going on??? Maybe I should wait for the English version...

Hmm.. I thinks that you can switch, at someway. Well ive seen some of the trailers, and in many of them its someone who is controlling a Cubone, (Partner, only) So acctualy, I think you should be able to control Machop, but I dont know how you will be able to switch back to Squirtle. And how your Squirtle did 41 Damage.. Maybe, you're lucky and makes much Critical-Hits! ^_^ I havent played the game, though. I scans the Trailers and screenshots, and searches for answers. The 41 Damage thing im not sure about..

Which pokemon did you encounter, if it was a fire type, its because of the type advantage. Hope I did make any sence.

Actually, you can be any of the pokemon on the "partner list" depending on the answers to the questions at the beginning. I've gotten bulbasaur, mudkip and skitty as my starter through 3 different tries

It sounds to me like maybe you have Machop as your starter and Squirtle is your partner...

Is that possible? Yayaya, thats pretty good! Im going to try to become a Cubone, *hugz its lonely, lovely, body..* Well then, the 41 damge thing is still, a mystery, but I think its because that the pokemon you encountered had low Sp. Def. And you had a high Sp. Atk. THAT gives you a good advantage. That can result with up to 40-50+ damage. Since that happened to me when I played Emerald, on the Battle Frontier.. -_-'' Defense is useless against Sp. Atk.. Boohoo.. ; _ ;

Step Two Select the top option

There are your list of attacks that use PP
Also press Right to see your partners attacks If they have a star next to a attack they can use that attack.

And the stuff they ask at the start is for choseing the starter and the list is for choseing your partner.

You have Machop as starter and Squirtle as partner... When you chose a pokemon, that pokemon is your partner your starter is chosen randomly with by those questions you aswered at the beggining...

oh alright I see how the starter and partner thing works now...
But there was no type advantage or anything, the Squirtle just attacked a wurmple and a pidgey when they were close by, and KO'ed them for 40+ damage...

But... the question is, why wouldn't squirtle be able to do 40+ damage at the second dungeon?

My totodile hit 50s and 60s when he learned water gun, so I guess there's really nothing too surprising about it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. =\

You are given a pokemon based on questions you answer in the beginning of the game, and your main team member can be chosen from the remaining 9 starters.
