Probably 3 or 4 at the most.
I think around 5... although there are some inconsistancies...
they said that a year passed when they arrived in Virdian City after Ash received the Volcano badge, but the third mini movie in the third move had a party for the first aniverseary for the day Ash and Pikachu first met.

But in the dub, Ash merely said it was the anniversery of the day he and Pikachu met. Not the first.

No, you're right. Ash didn't say it was their first anniversary, he said it was "a" anniversary.

There probably were a lot but there's only one way to find out a good estimation
Go through every single episode and count the days. Then estimate when time has gone by between the episodes when they say something like, "Ash and Pikachu have been training for the Pokemon league for a few days."
I've always wanted to do a low-scaled version of that.

If each episode consisted of a day this would be so much easier. If it was then only 1 year and 46 days in America and 1 year and 84 days in Japan.

This is what I think it is:
Kanto: A little over a year (from what Ash said at Viridian Gym)
Orange Islands: About half a year
Johto: Around 2 years
Hoenn: About a year
Kanto Battle Frontier: I'll guess about half a year even though it's not through
So it's about 5 years at most, probably between 4 and a half and 5.

In the U.S., it has been 8 years. In Japan, it must be 9. I know this episode was shown first to bring in viewers, then the first episode was shown. Cybercubed, where you got 4 or 5 years is beyond me. Unless it was shown recenty where you live.

The question was asking about time passed in the show, not the number of seasons it's been airing.
But that is what I said. It has been around 8 years since the airing of the first episode. And sorry if I was rude, Cybercubed.
EDIT: I get it now, so I would need to say 3 because it was a year when Ash got his first badge, and another in Pkemon The third movie, since it was the anniversary of when Ash met Pikachu, and maybe another year or two after that.

Ash is probably 14/15 by now, so I'm guessing four or five years.
