-> Make a lot of friends who don't mind not getting gifts but are willing to send you gifts. You'll get a lot of items this way and the exp for friendship level up is great. You can easily make friends through the internet (facebook groups for example)
-> If you want to spend money on the game you can invest in incenses to attract pokemon towards you
With the possibility to add stops (in some countries), it could get better in the future and there might be more stops and gyms near you. Hope you are able to have a fun experience anyways!
