How to use an item using SELECT

In R/B/Y couldn't you set an item so when you press SELECT you automatically use that item? Or was this only in G/S and later?

Sorry. Only GSC and up have this convenient program. Probably because the backpack was too small.

G/S/C and later only. The select button served no purpose in the older games other than for soft-resetting.

You also use the Select Button to move items, and moving items was a key for a glitch in Green and Japanese Red.
