How would you “fix” certain rivals

Kanto is love. Kanto is life.
It was not a good strategy and in the end it cost the battle.

Wrong, it was good strategy from both sides and it didn't cost battle. Paul would have won if Ash didn't use underground Flare Blitz that even Regi wouldn't think of it in million years.

Wrong, it was not. Intentionally letting them weaken 2 Pokémon in these instances is never a good strategy.

I already explained why it is.BTW if it is bad strategy then Ash vs Paul wouldnt be like in Top 3 battles of all time(in Pokemon anime)lol

It is a good battle by Ash/Infernape and Paul/Electivire rivalry, not by Paul's (bad) strategy at the start of the battle

Technically not? At least with Cyndaquil, it is a maybe with Totodile because he use it for to Build trenches
I explained why did he do that.

Yes and it was not a good reason to do it, even Sawyer did something better and he only lost by Ash-Greninja overpower
Problem is that Sawyer wild guessed that Ash was going to use XY team because Ash did not use reserves.Sawyer *knew* it because from start of league Ash used his 5 XY team.Paul saw that Ash used Quilava,Heracross etc. If Ash used reserves he would stomp Sawyer. With Paul he DIDNT know that Ash would use DP team that is why he used those Pokemon to weaken them or beat them and to draw out majority of Ash's Pokemon so his other Pokemon can beat them. This strategy is good because of entire strategy he planned out which suceeded.Point is that Paul would use this strategy against any team he put while Sawyer would get stomped by other Ash's teams.

I mean fwiw, suicide leads are a real thing in actual competitive Pokemon lol

There was also a lot of focus on the mindgame there. Paul got Ash to lower his guard with a 2-0 lead only to reveal he was in control the whole time. The idea was to get into Ash's head, build up his confidence and then tear it straight down. Gotta agree that if not for the underground Flare Blitz, which Ash could only think of by keeping a clear head, Ash would've lost for sure.

It wasn't hard to guess that Ash would use the team against Paul for pretty obvious reasons, especially since most.
And again, it wasn't a good strategy. Sawyer knew better to Ash so he was able to prepare a better strategy against Ash's team.

Actual competitive Pokémon had maths than determine if something is possible or not, so not a fair comparison.

Paul didnt know what team Ash would use against him lol.

It was very obvious knowing Ash
Obviously Paul didn't know thus he used that strategy. He didnt know that Ash would use revenge with same team.Since he seemed "shocked" and confused. He said like first Infernape then Staraptor and then Buizel implying he didnt know. Also what blast said.

We all do Paul's strategy in Pokemon Masters anyway.
We started in Gen II, actually, where a pokemon's gender actually affected how strong it was - females are literally weaker than males, and it only got worse once abilities, natures, and characteristics became a thing

Although if RNG smiled on you, you could end up with some amazingly powerful pokemon, like faster-than-a-champion's-garchomp meganiums or legendary-slaying dedennes

What blast said is not a good comparison because what happened in Pokémon games is pure math and probabilities
