Basically same as now except Paul instead of Iris and Ash using reserves instead of his current team.
And Ash loses against Leon in the end.

The more I think about it, the more I want to change up how parts of the PWC played out.
First, I don’t think I would have had Iris act as Ash’s gatekeeper to the M8. I would have had Ash face another companion from his past like Misty or Cilan, and Ash vs. Iris would have been an Ultra Class match instead.
I would have kept the same 8 members of the Masters 8 ranked in the same order, and I would have Ash defeat Raihan to get into the M8. Thematically, I would have had the M8 be a changing of the guard moment.

In an ideal world where A) Alain and Iris were given focus throughout Journeys to build up to their placements in the Master class, B) the entire tournament was comprised of full battles, and C) we got XY or peak-SM animation for the battles, I would have loved the surpassing the old guard to happen in the first round.
Round 1:
Ash vs Cynthia
Iris vs Lance
Alain vs Steven
Leon vs Diantha
Iris beats Lance, a Dragon Master. Iris claims she still has more to learn to become a Dragon Master, but Lance privately acknowledges her as one.
Alain beats Steven, finishing their battle from MES2.
Ash beats Cynthia, preferably with Infernape.
Leon still demolishes Diantha. She gets to show off her double screens, but we actually see Leon counter her screens with Infiltrator or Brick Break.
Round 2:
Ash vs Iris or Alain
Leon vs Alain or Iris
Either Ash beats Alain to follow up the Kalos League loss, or he fights Iris, who can serve as a physical reminder of all of Ash's companions and adventures. Either way, he wins a margin, with two or three Pokémon still standing.
The other gets demolished by Leon, but is noted to do better than Diantha.

Ash vs Leon
Ash uses an ultimate team with all his gimmicks. My vote would be Charizard (Mega Y), Melmetal (G-max), Greninja (BB), Lucario (who uses Aura to emulate Mega Evolution), Lycanroc (no gimmick, but reminder of Alola Champion status), and Pikachu with 10MV.

Honestly I don't think I would really change anything. I was never interested in a fourth Ash vs. Alain match so I wouldn't pair them in up in the first round. Was hoping that Lance would be his first opponent but Steven is a good alternative.

Salamnce probably because he uses one in BW2. Flygon I'm not sure about and Feraligatr is something Lance uses in Pokemon stadium 2. He uses a Tyranitar as well which I think would be a better pick personally.
