Huge profit potential...

A thought occurred to me just recently: if pokemon is all about profit for the game designers and Nintendo, then the Wii could maximize that potential.

For years, fans (outside of Japan) screamed and moaned about the "event pokemon" only obtainable by going to some remote location, usually very inconvenient for most. Now that PBR will be on the Wii, with WiFi and the ability to download add-ons, the event items could be sold a month or two after said event (maybe a little longer). It's still fair, event attendees get first claim (free no less) and other fans aren't shafted.

This after-market offer could go for somewhere in the range of 5-20 American dollars (the former if the fans are the motivation, the latter if profit is) and would bring in potential millions. Think about it, how many fans who own a copy (or copies) of D/P would not hesitate to lay down money for pokemon such as: Deoxys, Celebi, Manaphy, Sheimi, Darkrai and (the favorite or most hated) Aruseus? Most would go for it immediately. Given the volume of sales of the games, it would be one of the most successful marketing strategies yet.

Now, I don't necessarily agree with this idea, I just thought it would be interesting to point out. Discuss...

As convenient as it sounds, I don't think they'll do that via wi-fi. They probably need the event pokemons to be a big incentive for people to even bother going to the events. Manaphy was already released in Japan, and it required preordering a ticket and using/redeeming that ticket in designated locations with Pokemon Rangers.

They probably will continue with the events, except instead of trading via Wireless Adapter/Link Cable with GBA/GBASP, you use DS Download Stations instead. That's just my take on it. We'll probably know by the time Battle Revolution rolls out sometime in December.

Sometimes a bit rude
but is it confirmed dat it will be able to use Wi-Fi at all?

*Sigh* Yes, it is *coughmoroncough*. DP has Wi-Fi, so does PBR.

And this isn't the first time this has been brought up, and I'm sure Nintendo might do it, for the fans'n'all. Though, as a poster already said, Manaphy might be a no. Oh well. Lets just hope, I guess.

Valid point

Good observation...
Although, first shot seems like a significant incentive. Just look at how many people on the internet must post "first" in official threads. People do a lot to have things "now" as well as "first"; Xbox360, Furbies, Tickle Me Elmo and the like have proven that.

As for promoting other things pokemon (i.e. preorder movie ticket), it helps profit; but I doubt the people who preordered weren't going to see the movie originally anyway (it was just a bonus for them). Also, a D/P pokemon from ranger is definitely an odd choice. The people who preordered, had ranger, redeemed the ticket, bought D/P, traded the egg and own a Manaphy are somewhat few in number.

Promotionally, the word might have spread a bit more and maybe persuaded a few uninterested people to see the movie. Profit wise, the scenario I mentioned would work better. Many people who will have a DS and D/P will get the Wii and PBR. Either that or use a friend to acquire it (multiple purchases and the like). All theory, all unlikely since the people behind pokemon are stubborn (just look at the recurring plot); hypothetically speaking though, it's money in the bank.

this isn't the first time this has been brought up, and I'm sure Nintendo might do it, for the fans'n'all.
I know it has been talked of here an there on forums, but I have not seen it as a topic of discussion. Neither have I seen mention of the idea of profit over exclusivity. Nothing on message boards is original, but things can be condensed, restated and conveyed in clearer language (no l33t for example).

A word of caution

lol welll soooooooooooooooorry

The only thing I have to say is: If you use another topic to ask a question that isn't directly on the same subject, expect to be flamed. Now, your question is related to the game; but this topic is fairly specific. If you refrain from posting somewhat off topic questions in other's topics, you can avoid negative feedback. Personal topic creation works best. ;)

No. Why the hell would you want to willing give your money to code that should be in the game regardless? What the hell? This is as stupid as Sony's GT plan. I can't believe fans would WANT to be raped by Nintendo like this, good god.

Now that was a rather heated, crass response.

I'm speaking hypothetically here, presenting a concept (not advocating its implementaion). Some people must consider travel cost for attending events; item purchase could be significantly less money overall.

Now, many will have your view of wanting no "unobtainable" pokemon; but Gamefreak continues this pattern, regardless of fan feedback. Needless to say, there are several event pokemon in D/P and the concept of purchase over pass up is up for discussion here.

Please be considerate. :)

or the events could just be transmitted over wifi for free so that gamers can enjoy what the paid for in the first place on certain events.

Haven't all the other events had free admission? So why should we have to pay to get what we would've got at a FREE event anyway?
Nice idea, though.

Actually no. The Manafi event had you buying movie tickets, and Ranger. Sure they probably were already seeing the movie, but it's not exactly free. Plus as Obsidian said, there's always travel costs as well.

I like the idea(not quite as much as just foregoing event Pokemon), but I think it would be nice, to not have to wait for a kind person to trade you cloned Pokemon over Wi-Fi to get some unobtainables. Although this won't work with D/P, because as far as I know there is no cloning glitch in D/P, so Wi-fi trading 4th gen unobtainables isn't gonna happen most likely.

Is anything free?

The logic here is that many cannot attend events due the location(s) they are held. This would be a sort of second chance, post event (so event attendees get first grab), with a price (to keep the value of attending the original event).

or the events could just be transmitted over wifi for free so that gamers can enjoy what the paid for in the first place on certain events.

Unfortunately, experience shows that Gamefreak, Nintendo and the others are not that considerate/generous. If only they were not so stubborn, we can all hope.

they make enough profit as it is, I can see if they actually bent over backwads on the DP games...but no, their basic cookie cutter Pokemon games. Charging for the game code? No.

This is why people hate PS3.
