human endurance vs. pokemon power

here's something that's rarely considered in fics...

how strong should be people be depicted physically in fics?

frankly, I find it rather silly how most fics would depict people as being so feeble that the weakest of pokemon attacks can easily kill them.

the anime often shows people (usually Team Rocket) taking pokemon attacks with moderate pain, but being a cartoon, it's very obvious that such things wouldn't happen in real life.

Well, with my fic, the opening scene has a character taking a normal Bite attack from a Houndour. I used my own experience to depict it. A dog bite isn't much; it'll put you out of commission for a while, but you won't die.

I think it's the fact that Pokémon, to some people (a lot of people?) see Pokémon as having the fantastical powers. A human being can't survive well being struck by lightning, stuck in an inferno, or what-not. I think that's what the problem is. Human flesh isn't the best armor in the world.

Let me put it like this...

If a human being can survive being set on fire for a few minutes (of course, WITH the burns and all), they can survive that sort of thing. However, that would depend (Thunder, for example, should be an insta-death thing... for any type that isn't resistant to it).

Additionally, I do have a reason as to why the characters in my latest fic can survive those moves... but it's so far in the fic, I'd rather have you people read it and find out by yourselves.

I guess it depends on what kind of fiction you are doing. Or you doing fantasy or more realism to it? Of course, if dealing with someone surviving type attacks that seems life thretening like thunder, fire, posion, etc. then there should be good reason why that person can survive that. That's all I have to say on that for now.

I'm of the mind that some pokemon do have much more endurance and power than humans, but that most of the basic forms are pretty equivalent or even below human strength. For example, caterpie and weedle, while a lot tougher than your average caterpillar, can in no way take a human, even a ten-year-old. However, you want to mess with aggron... well, no, actually, you don't.

Generally, I consider lower evolutions to be only a slight step up in power from the animals that they appear to be based off, with the increasingly more bulky and obviously more powerful creatures quickly developing past human strength. Most non-elemental or weak moves I could see a human surviving (tackle, thundershock, etc), but if you start throwing around things like focus punch and earthquake, no way.

I think it depends on the person and the attack. I mean, a baby would probably die If bitten by a wolf, while a man would just suffer blood loss, and bandage it up. Humans have little tolerance for lighting, except for the record breaking person who was hit by it over ten times. And I've been severly burned hundreds of times and I hardly feel any pain, because I'm different. So experiment with your characters, but don't make them too weak or too strong. We don't need 00ber Ash.

It depends on the human just as much as the pokemon. A human who has trained himself rigorously to be a master Kickboxer could very well fight against Pokemon in combat and put up a good fight, or even win. Likewise, a human with destructive technology such as a gun or photon laser... well, do I even have to say it?

The way I write it, humans and Pokemon have fought before, whether it be empirical forces wanting to conquer land, or humans in need of sparring partners.

This isn't to say it's one-sided. It's anything but. A Pokemon can be trained to exceed its limitations as well, whether through combat training, discipline or meditation. In the end, it is possible for Pokemon to exceed their specie limitations... at least to a point, unless said Pokemon has been working exceptionally hard to attain a status of above and beyond.
